Market Snapshot
North American major appliance production runs at roughly 40 to 45 million units a year across refrigeration, laundry, cooking, dishwashing and the room air and small appliance categories, built in a belt that runs from Ohio and Michigan through Kentucky, Tennessee, the Carolinas and Alabama and down into Monterrey, Ramos Arizpe, Celaya and Juarez. Almost every one of those units is, structurally, a formed sheet metal box. A side-by-side refrigerator carries 45 to 60 kilograms of steel, a top-load washer 30 to 40, a freestanding range 40 to 55. Put the category together and appliance manufacturing consumes somewhere between one and a half and two million tonnes of flat-rolled steel a year in North America, plus a meaningful share of the continent's cold-rolled stainless.
What separates this lens from every other metal forming market in the atlas is how little of that steel is formed by anyone other than the company whose badge goes on the front. Whirlpool, GE Appliances, Electrolux and Sub-Zero all run their own press shops, their own roll formers and their own weld lines, and several of them run their own porcelain enamel lines as well. A refrigerator cabinet is 90 percent air, and shipping air is the one cost that no amount of process engineering removes, so the wrapper gets formed a few hundred feet from where it gets foamed. The same logic holds for oven cavities, dryer drums, washer cabinets and base pans.
That has two consequences a supplier has to absorb before it does anything else. The first is that the Tier 1 market in this lens is small, specialized and defined by what the OEM press shop is not tooled to do: wire forming, tube bending, porcelain enamel on parts the captive line cannot take, deep draw, and the long tail of small stampings. The second is that the highest-leverage decision in appliance metal is not made in a press shop at all. It is made at a coil coater.
Prepainted and prelaminated coil is the spine of this market. When a refrigerator wrapper, a washer cabinet, a dryer front or a toe kick arrives at the press already white, already black, already wearing a stainless-look laminate, the appliance plant does not own a paint line, a cure oven, a paint kitchen, a wastewater treatment system or a Title V air permit for that part. The finishing operation has moved upstream, and with it the capital, the labor, the environmental compliance and the quality risk. That makes the coil coater a strategic supplier rather than a commodity converter, and it makes coating durability through forming, which is a genuinely hard technical problem, the thing the coater actually sells.
The rest of the supply base arranges itself around that fact. Tier 2 is coil coaters, laminators, flat-rolled processors and the specialty strip and tube houses. Tier 3 is the mills: Cleveland-Cliffs and U.S. Steel for enameling grade and coated carbon sheet, Nucor and Steel Dynamics for coated and painted flat-rolled, North American Stainless and Outokumpu for stainless, Novelis and Arconic for aluminum. Service centers slit, blank and hold inventory for anyone below coil-program scale. Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum, and antidumping duties on imported stainless and certain coated steels, have made all of that geography considerably stickier than it was a decade ago.
How the Supply Chain Is Structured
The tier vocabulary is the same one every report in this atlas uses. What it describes here is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly.
The OEM is the primary former, and more so than in any other industry covered here. Whirlpool presses cabinets and cavities in Ohio, Iowa, Tennessee and Oklahoma; GE Appliances forms at Appliance Park in Louisville and at its Tennessee and Alabama plants; Electrolux forms in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee; Sub-Zero fabricates stainless in Wisconsin. The large visible panels and the structural boxes are formed in house, and they are formed close to final assembly. A supplier does not bid on a refrigerator wrapper. It bids on the parts around it.
The OEM also frequently owns the coil. On the higher-volume programs the appliance maker negotiates flat-rolled pricing directly with the mill against its own material specifications, and a Tier 1 or Tier 2 former is buying that coil at the OEM price and selling conversion, not metal. That is worth internalizing: there is very little steel margin available in this lens, and a supplier pitching material savings is pitching against the customer's own purchasing organization.
Tier 1 is therefore narrow and specialized. It is the wire form houses that make refrigerator shelves and dishwasher racks, because wire forming is a completely different capital base from sheet forming and no OEM press shop wants it. It is the merchant porcelain enamelers, a shrinking group, who take the enameling work a captive line cannot absorb. It is the tube benders who make handles. It is the deep-draw stampers who make motor and pump housings. And it is the contract fabricators who take low and medium volume assemblies, premium and commercial models, and the programs whose volume never justified OEM tooling.
Tier 2 is where the differentiator lives. Precoat Metals, Roll Coater and the smaller coil coaters apply polyester, silicone-modified polyester and PVDF paint systems and laminate films to steel and aluminum coil, in-line, at speed, before anyone forms anything. Material Sciences Corporation and its peers laminate two steel skins over a viscoelastic core to make damping steel for wash and spin noise. Steel Technologies, Worthington Steel and Heidtman pickle, slit, cold roll and blank. Ta Chen and Ulbrich hold and process stainless, Ulbrich in the light gauge precision strip that hinge, spring and trim parts come from. Webco welds tube.
Tier 3 is the mill. The important specialization here is enameling-grade steel: low carbon, decarburized, low in metalloids, made specifically so that hydrogen released during the enamel firing does not lift the glass off the surface in flakes. It is a narrow product with a small number of qualified sources, and an oven cavity or dryer drum program is captive to them. On the stainless side, North American Stainless in Ghent and Outokumpu in Calvert are the two integrated domestic producers, which matters a great deal given how much of the price tier signal in this industry rides on a stainless surface.
Three things a supplier from another material world should know. Tooling is usually OEM owned and OEM paid, as it is in automotive, but the programs are smaller and the model year churn is slower, so a die runs for a long time and the aftermarket and service part stream is real revenue. Qualification runs through UL and the OEM's own reliability testing rather than through IATF 16949, and an automotive supplier arriving with an IATF certificate will find it counts for credibility and for nothing else. And the acoustic specification is unexpectedly central: a quiet dishwasher and a washer that does not walk are both sold on the box, and both are partly metal problems.
OEM Landscape
The seventeen OEM entities in this atlas's appliance roster buy metal the same way they buy polymers, with one large difference: most of them make a great deal of it themselves. The full roster with plant footprints is in the gated section. What matters in this lens is how much each one forms and what it therefore leaves to the supply base.
Whirlpool is the largest buyer and the largest in-house former. Cabinets, wrappers, oven cavities, drums and base pans are pressed and welded in Clyde, Marion, Findlay, Amana, Cleveland and Tulsa, and a good deal of the coil is bought on Whirlpool's own agreements. What leaves the building is wire forms, handles, hinges and latches, enamel overflow, and the long tail of brackets. GE Appliances runs the same model out of Appliance Park, where the scale of the campus means the press shop, the enamel line and final assembly are all on one site.
Electrolux North America and Sub-Zero sit at opposite ends of one spectrum. Electrolux forms at volume in Springfield, Anderson and Kinston for a mass market line where prepainted coil is the default surface. Sub-Zero fabricates premium stainless in Madison and Fitchburg, where the material is 304, the finish is the product, and the forming problem is cosmetic rather than structural.
The Korean transplants, Samsung in Newberry and LG in Clarksville, brought their own captive forming with them, which is one reason those plants were built as complete manufacturing sites rather than assembly operations. BSH builds dishwashers in New Bern and imports most of its cooking and refrigeration. Midea builds and also contract manufactures for other brands, which makes it both an OEM and, occasionally, a customer of the same suppliers its competitors use.
The commercial side of the roster behaves differently and is the more accessible entry point. Middleby, Ali Group, Hoshizaki and the commercial arms of the residential makers build lower volumes across far more models, in stainless rather than prepainted steel, to NSF cleanability requirements rather than consumer cosmetics. Low volume across many models is exactly the profile a contract fabricator serves well and a captive press shop serves badly, so a far larger share of commercial foodservice metal is bought than built.
The outdoor cooking names, Weber, Char-Broil and Traeger, are a third pattern again: heavily contract manufactured, often offshore, with porcelain enameled steel and cast iron cooking surfaces, stamped fireboxes and tubular steel frames. They are a metal-intensive category that has very little captive forming of its own, and the sourcing decisions sit in Palatine, Columbus and Salt Lake City rather than at a plant.
The practical read for a supplier is that the residential majors are hard to enter on formed sheet metal and reachable on wire, tube, enamel and hardware, while commercial foodservice and outdoor cooking are reachable on fabrication itself. That, and the fact that every one of these companies buys coil coating whether it forms in house or not.
