The youngest and least locked-down supply base in this atlas. Programs are still being designed, incumbency is weak, and UL 9540A thermal runaway test results depend directly on the materials sitting between the cells, which makes an adhesive or thermal material supplier a safety-critical vendor rather than a commodity one. This lens maps nineteen part families across battery module bonding, thermal interface and barrier, enclosure sealing, solar module and array, and asset identification, with a thirty-three position roster across four tiers. The differentiator is that a better barrier material produces a better UL 9540A result, a better 9540A result shrinks the separation distance NFPA 855 requires, and a shorter separation distance puts more megawatt hours on the same parcel of land. That converts a material choice into a project economics argument, which is a sales conversation no adhesive supplier in any other industry gets to have.

Market Snapshot

Energy storage is the youngest industry in this atlas, and on the adhesives and thermal materials lens it is also the least locked down. In automotive, a bonding adhesive position is defended by a platform qualification that took five years and a PPAP file nobody wants to rebuild. Here the programs are still being designed. Integrators are on their second or third enclosure generation, cell formats keep changing, and a material decision made in 2023 is being revisited now. A supplier with the right agency file and the right test data can win a design position in months rather than years, and that is not true anywhere else in this catalog.

The reason it is worth doing is that this industry treats these materials as safety critical. A battery energy storage system is gated by UL 9540A, the thermal runaway fire propagation test, and the outcome of that test depends directly on what sits between the cells: the barrier sheet, the compression pad, the gap filler and the bonding adhesive. A supplier selling into that position is not selling a commodity input. It is selling a component of a fire safety case that a utility, an authority having jurisdiction and an insurer will all read.

Three related markets sit under this heading and they do not buy the same way. Grid-scale battery storage is sold as a containerized project to a utility or an independent power producer, with a procurement cycle that looks like construction rather than manufacturing. Residential storage is a consumer durable sold through an installer channel, where a wall-hung box has to look acceptable in a garage and carry a ten year warranty. Solar module and racking is a third supply chain entirely, feeding the same project sites with modules, trackers and the DC wiring between them, and carrying a twenty five year warranty expectation that makes UV and hydrolytic aging data a precondition rather than a selling point.

The material content is larger than most suppliers assume, because almost none of it is inside the cell. A lithium-ion cell is metal, electrolyte and separator. The adhesive, tape and thermal content of this industry is in the bonding that holds cells into a module, the interface that carries heat from the cell to the cold plate, the barrier that stops a cell fire from becoming a pack fire, the sealing that keeps water out of a twenty year outdoor enclosure, and the sealant and lamination inside every solar module on the same site.

The Inflation Reduction Act pulled the assembly of all of it onto the continent faster than anyone forecast. Domestic content adders reward North American-made enclosures, structural steel, modules and increasingly cells, and a material supplier with North American manufacturing has an argument in 2026 that it did not have in 2021.

How the Supply Chain Is Structured

This industry does not have an automotive pyramid, and on this lens the tier labels carry a specific meaning worth stating before the roster.

The OEM is whoever owns the nameplate on the finished system. In grid-scale that is the integrator: Tesla, Fluence, Sungrow, Powin, FlexGen and the Wartsila storage business. In residential it is the inverter and battery brand, as often Enphase, SolarEdge or Generac as a battery company. In solar hardware it is the module manufacturer and the tracker company. The cell manufacturers building North American plants, LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, SK On and Panasonic, are carried as OEMs because they sell modules and DC blocks into these systems. Those sixteen OEM rows belong to the polymers lens of this industry and are shared across every lens; the gated roster in this report covers the thirty-three supplier positions specific to adhesives, tapes and thermal materials.

Tier 1 splits two ways, and missing the second half is the most common mistake a supplier makes here. The first half is the enclosure, thermal and electrical equipment companies: nVent and its Hoffman enclosure brand, Rittal, Schneider Electric, Eaton, Vertiv, Modine and Boyd. They specify the sealant, the gasket bond and the thermal material on the largest parts in the system, and they buy by the drum and the roll.

The second half is the converters and die-cutters: Marian, JBC Technologies, CGR Products and the converting arm of Boyd and R.S. Hughes. A thermal pad, a barrier sheet or a foam gasket does not reach a module as a roll. It reaches it as a kiss-cut, tabbed, kitted part with a liner designed to be pulled by a line operator wearing gloves. The converter is what turns a material into a part number, and a material producer without a converting relationship cannot reach the application at all. Suppliers arriving from an industrial distribution background consistently underweight this tier.

Tier 2 is the adhesive, tape and thermal material producers: 3M, Henkel, Dow, H.B. Fuller, Avery Dennison, tesa and Nitto on the adhesive and tape side; Parker Chomerics, Laird, Fujipoly and Master Bond on the thermal and EMI side; and Aspen Aerogels and Alkegen on thermal barrier, which is the newest commercial category in this atlas. Bergquist, the name most often asked about in a thermal gap filler conversation, is a Henkel business and is not a separate account.

Tier 3 is the chemistry underneath: Dow, Momentive, Shin-Etsu, Elkem and Wacker on silicones, and Arkema on acrylics and fluoropolymers. Silicone dominates this lens more completely than any chemistry dominates any other lens in the atlas, which means Tier 3 capacity decisions reach the price of a finished gap pad directly.

Distribution is Ellsworth, Krayden and R.S. Hughes, and it matters more here than in automotive because the integrators are smaller and a great many of them cannot open a direct account.

OEM Landscape

Tesla is the largest single buyer in North American stationary storage and the only integrator that also manufactures cells, packs, inverters and the enclosure. Megapack is built at the Lathrop, California Megafactory and at a second Megafactory in Houston. Vertical integration means Tesla specifies its own materials rather than accepting a supplier catalog, and it means the material conversation happens with a Tesla engineer rather than with an enclosure vendor. That is a harder door and a larger prize.

Fluence Energy is the largest independent integrator and the more accessible customer. It buys nearly everything it ships, and its domestic-content enclosures and modules are contract-manufactured in Utah and Tennessee rather than in owned plants, which means the real material specification conversation often happens with the contract manufacturer rather than with Fluence. A supplier who calls only on Arlington will find that the decision was made somewhere else.

The cell manufacturers are a different kind of account. LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, SK On and Panasonic build in North America but specify from Korea and Japan, and their material approvals frequently arrive already made. The practical route in is through the Japanese and Korean material suppliers already on those approved lists, or through the North American module and pack assembly where local sourcing decisions are genuinely local. Nitto and Shin-Etsu reach this industry that way rather than through a North American sales motion.

On the solar side, First Solar is the only large United States-headquartered module manufacturer and the only one not using crystalline silicon, which changes the backsheet and encapsulant answer completely. Qcells built Cartersville, Georgia to run ingot through module under the domestic content rules. Nextracker is the largest tracker company on the continent and is asset-light, so its material specifications land at contract fabricators across the United States and Mexico.

In residential, Enphase and Generac sell hardware a homeowner looks at every day, which makes cosmetics, finish and label durability material requirements in a way they never are inside a containerized system.

A warning that belongs in the free portion of this report rather than behind the gate: this is the most volatile roster in the atlas. Between 2024 and 2026 companies on this list have filed for bankruptcy protection, been put up for sale by their parent, exited product lines they had just built factories for, and re-announced plant assignments more than once. Confirm the entity before you build a call plan around it.
