North American Automotive Textiles, Nonwovens and Soft Trim: Supply Base and Application Map
Two parallel supply chains that rarely touch. Visible soft trim, meaning seat fabric, carpet face and headliner cloth, is styled by the design studio of the OEM and sourced on appearance and durability. Invisible nonwovens, meaning acoustic absorbers, wheel arch liners, trunk trim and insulators, are engineered products sold on grammage, airflow resistance and acoustic performance. The same Tier 1 often makes both, and the buyer inside the OEM is a different person with a different calendar. This lens maps twenty part families across seating textiles, floor covering, overhead and trim cover, acoustic nonwoven and filtration media, with a thirty-five position roster across four tiers. The differentiator is that needlepunched recycled PET is quietly the most successful material substitution in the modern vehicle interior: it displaced molded plastic in wheel arch liners, foam in dash insulators and fiberglass in hood liners, winning on weight, acoustics, cost and recycled content simultaneously, which material substitutions almost never do. The headwind is PFAS in durable water repellent and stain resist finishes, where there is no drop-in replacement and every supplier on this roster is reformulating right now.

Market Snapshot
A North American light vehicle carries roughly 25 to 45 kilograms of textile and nonwoven material, and almost none of the people who sell it to the OEM are selling to the same buyer. That is the first thing to understand about this category and it is the thing most suppliers get wrong.
Split the content in half. The visible half is soft trim: seat cover fabric, molded floor carpet, headliner cloth, sun visor and pillar covers, door panel inserts. Perhaps 12 to 18 kilograms, sourced on appearance, hand, abrasion resistance and lightfastness, specified by the color and trim studio and locked years before production on a styling calendar. The invisible half is engineered nonwoven: carpet underlay, dash outer absorbers, wheel arch liners, underbody shields, hood liners, trunk trim, filtration media. Another 12 to 25 kilograms depending on segment, sourced on grammage, airflow resistance and acoustic absorption curves, specified by NVH engineering on a completely separate calendar against completely different acceptance criteria.
One polymer covers most of both halves. Polyester is the seat fabric, the carpet face, the headliner cloth, the needlepunch felt in every acoustic location, and the support layers in most filtration media. Polyamide 66 holds airbag fabric and a shrinking legacy position in premium carpet. Polypropylene holds spunmelt filtration media and the molded parts the nonwovens are displacing. That concentration is the reason the polyester feedstock chain sits at Tier 3 of this report and the reason a PET resin capacity decision reaches the price of a hood liner.
Demand follows vehicle assembly: southern Ontario through Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky, then south through Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina to the Mexican Bajio. The textile supply base does not follow it exactly. Fabric and nonwoven production is still concentrated in the Carolinas and the southeastern textile belt, which is where the mills were before automotive ever bought from them, and roll goods ship economically over distances that molded parts do not. Molded nonwoven parts are a different matter: a wheel arch liner is mostly air and it is thermoformed within a day of truck of the plant it feeds.
Three forces set material choice. FMVSS 302 flammability, which every interior textile must pass and which is the first test any new fabric faces. Interior air quality and odor specifications, which are stricter for textiles than for almost any other material class because a fabric has enormous surface area and sits in the occupant breathing zone. And recycled content, which has moved from a marketing preference to a line on supplier scorecards, and which polyester happens to be extraordinarily well placed to deliver.
How the Supply Chain Is Structured
Two chains, and they meet at the OEM assembly plant and almost nowhere before it.
The visible soft trim chain starts in the color and trim studio. A designer selects a fabric from a development program that a fabric house like Sage or Haartz has been running against that OEM for years, and the award is made on the material, directly, before the seat or headliner program is sourced. The fabric house then ships roll goods to whichever Tier 1 wins the seat or the overhead system, and that Tier 1 cuts, sews, laminates and delivers the finished assembly. So the specification and the purchase order are in different companies: the OEM specifies the fabric and the Tier 1 buys it. A fabric supplier that calls only on the Tier 1 will be quoted against price on a material it cannot get specified. One that calls only on the studio will be specified and then squeezed by a buyer with no stake in the decision.
Adient, Lear and Toyota Boshoku are the seating houses, and they are not interchangeable as accounts. Lear has its own surface materials operation, including leather, which means a fabric supplier calling on Lear is competing with its customer. Adient does not, which makes it the larger open market for cover materials. Toyota Boshoku sits on the visible chain, the acoustic chain and the filtration chain simultaneously, which makes it the single most efficient account on this roster to develop. Overhead is Grupo Antolin and Motus, with IAC on the interior panels that meet the headliner.
The invisible nonwoven chain starts in NVH engineering. An acoustics Tier 1 is awarded a package of parts against a cabin noise target: carpet and underlay, dash outer, wheel arch liners, underbody, hood liner, trunk trim. Autoneum, Adler Pelzer, Auria and UGN hold nearly all of it in North America, and the crucial structural fact is that all four make most of their own needlepunch felt. They are simultaneously the customer for polyester fiber and the competitor to any merchant nonwoven producer trying to sell them finished roll goods. A nonwoven supplier selling into this chain is selling either fiber, or a specialty the Tier 1 does not make itself, or capacity during a peak.
Tier 2 is where the fabric and nonwoven production actually sits: Sage and Haartz on the visible side, and Freudenberg, Foss, Alkegen, Sandler, TWE, Johns Manville, Berry, Fitesa and Avgol on the nonwoven side. Precision Fabrics Group sits in a category of its own as one of very few North American airbag weavers. Hanes Engineered Materials supplies the scrim layer almost nobody outside the laminating plants has heard of.
Tier 3 is polyester feedstock and it is short: Indorama and Alpek on PET resin and fiber, Unifi on recycled, Ascend on the nylon 66 behind airbag fabric, and the polyolefin producers behind spunmelt media. That concentration is a supply risk most textile buyers have never modelled, because they came up buying a commodity with many sources and this one no longer has many.
Distribution is thin and it is converting rather than warehousing. Precision Converting and CGR slit, die-cut and laminate roll goods into the shapes and sizes a Tier 1 line consumes, which is how a producer reaches a program too small to buy master rolls.
OEM Landscape
The same eighteen OEM entities that assemble light vehicles in North America buy every part in this report, and on this lens they differ from each other more than on any other. Soft trim is where brand identity is expressed, so the sourcing culture is shaped by the brand rather than by the purchasing organization.
General Motors and Ford run the largest volumes and the most formalized color and trim processes, with fabric development programs that run several years ahead of production and a materials engineering group that signs off independently of the studio. Ford truck volume makes it the largest single buyer of molded carpet and hood liners in the market. Stellantis has historically moved faster and less predictably on interior materials than the other two, which cuts both ways for a supplier.
Toyota Motor North America sources acoustics through UGN and seats and filtration through Toyota Boshoku, and its hybrid-heavy mix keeps hood liners and engine bay acoustic content on nearly every vehicle it builds while pure battery electric programs at other OEMs delete them. Honda and Nissan run similar transplant structures with their own preferred suppliers. The German and Korean transplants in the Southeast brought their European and Korean soft trim suppliers with them, which is a large part of why the fabric supply base has a North Carolina and South Carolina center of gravity rather than a Michigan one.
The electric entrants changed the acoustic specification more than the visible one. With no engine noise to mask road and wind input, Tesla, Rivian and Lucid vehicles carry more absorber area, more acoustic wheel arch liner coverage and more attention to the high frequency range where dissipative nonwoven systems beat barrier systems. They also tend to delete the hood liner entirely, which is the one part family on this lens that electrification is shrinking rather than growing. On the visible side they push harder on animal-free and recycled content claims than the incumbents do, and they say so in marketing, which has pulled the whole industry forward faster than the incumbents intended.
