Market Snapshot

Energy storage is the youngest industry in this atlas and the only one where the supply base is still being assembled in public. Grid-scale battery storage went from a rounding error to the largest single source of new dispatchable capacity on the North American interconnection queue in under a decade, and the companies selling into it are a mix of ten-year-old integrators, Korean and Japanese cell manufacturers building their first North American plants, inverter companies that arrived from the solar side, and one vehicle manufacturer that treats stationary storage as a second product line.

Three related markets sit under this one heading and they do not buy the same way. Grid-scale battery energy storage is sold as a containerized project to a utility or an independent power producer, in twenty foot enclosures rated in megawatt hours, with a procurement cycle that looks like construction rather than manufacturing. Residential storage is a consumer durable sold through an installer channel, where the product is a wall-hung box that has to look acceptable in a garage and carry a ten year warranty. Solar module and racking is a third supply chain entirely, feeding the same projects with modules, trackers and the DC wiring that connects them.

For a polymer supplier the important fact is where the material actually sits. It is not in the cell. A lithium-ion cell is metal, electrolyte and separator, and its production is capital equipment work that no compounder sells into. The polymer content in this industry is in the enclosure, the thermal management system, the cable management, the module and pack hardware around the cells, and the solar hardware that shares the site. That content is growing faster than the cell business, because it is where the fire-safety requirements landed.

The Inflation Reduction Act changed the sourcing calculus for every project after 2022. Domestic content adders reward North American-made enclosures, structural steel, trackers and increasingly cells, and they have pulled assembly onto the continent faster than anyone forecast. That is the single largest reason a supplier who has never quoted this industry should be quoting it now.

How the Supply Chain Is Structured

This industry does not have an automotive pyramid and the tier labels in this report are used deliberately.

The OEM is whoever owns the nameplate on the finished system. In grid-scale that is the integrator: Tesla, Fluence, Sungrow, Powin, FlexGen and the Wartsila storage business, companies that specify and assemble a containerized system from cells they buy, enclosures they buy or contract, thermal equipment they buy and controls they write themselves. In residential it is the inverter and battery brand, which is as often Enphase, SolarEdge or Generac as it is a battery company. In solar hardware it is the module manufacturer and the tracker company. The cell manufacturers with new North American plants, LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, SK On and Panasonic, are carried as OEMs because they sell modules and DC blocks into these systems, not because the cell is a polymer opportunity.

Tier 1 is the enclosure, thermal and balance-of-system supplier. This is the tier that a polymers supplier should understand best, because it is the tier that actually writes the material specification on the largest parts. nVent and its Hoffman enclosure business, Rittal, Schneider Electric, Eaton, Vertiv, Modine and Boyd sell enclosures, cooling systems, cable management and electrical equipment into every integrator on the list. Array Technologies and GameChange Solar sit in the same tier on the solar side, selling trackers and racking.

Tier 2 is the compounder and the molder. Avient, RTP, Techmer and the LNP side of SABIC compound the flame-rated, high-tracking-index and structural grades that the parts require. Core Molding, Spartech, Mack Molding, Romeo RIM and Centro mold and form them. Atkore sits across the line, fabricating conduit and cable tray that it both sells as a finished system and buys resin for like a molder.

Tier 3 is the resin producer: SABIC, Covestro, BASF, Dow, Celanese, Solvay, Evonik, DuPont, Arkema and Trinseo.

Distribution is the same three plastics distributors that serve every other polymers lens in the atlas, and it matters more here than it does in automotive, because the molders in this industry are smaller and buy in smaller lots.

OEM Landscape

Tesla is the largest single buyer in North American stationary storage and the only integrator that also manufactures cells, packs, inverters and the enclosure. Megapack is built at the Lathrop, California Megafactory and at a second Megafactory in Houston, and the product is deliberately vertically integrated, which means Tesla specifies its own materials rather than accepting an enclosure supplier catalogue.

Fluence Energy is the largest independent integrator. It was formed as a Siemens and AES joint venture, went public in 2021, and buys nearly everything it ships, which makes it a far more accessible customer for a component or material supplier than Tesla is. Its domestic-content enclosures and modules are contract-manufactured in Utah and Tennessee rather than in owned plants, so the real specification conversation happens with the contract manufacturer as often as with Fluence.

On the solar side, First Solar is the only large United States-headquartered module manufacturer and the only one that does not use crystalline silicon, and Nextracker is the largest tracker company on the continent. In residential, Enphase and Generac sell hardware that a homeowner sees every day, which makes cosmetics and finish a material requirement in a way they never are in a containerized system.
