Market Snapshot
There is no such thing as a marine foam buyer. There are three of them, they sit in different buildings, they buy on different criteria, and a supplier that walks into a boat plant with one pitch will be sent to the wrong person.
The first is the hull shop, and what it buys is compliance. Title 33 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 183, requires that most monohull boats under 20 feet float when swamped, and for nearly every builder the way to satisfy that is two-part rigid polyurethane foam poured into the hull cavities from a meter-mix machine. The foam has to pass immersion tests in gasoline, oil, and bilge cleaner. It is not an engineered choice the way a resin or a core is. It is a legally required product, and the buyer is a production engineer who cares about density, yield per drum, cure time, and whether the Coast Guard would accept the file.
The second is the upholstery shop, and what it buys is comfort and drainage. Every cushion, bolster, helm seat, sunpad, and berth mattress on the boat is cut or molded flexible polyurethane, or closed-cell polyethylene, under marine vinyl. This is the largest foam volume in the boat by a wide margin and the least specified. The buyer is a cut-and-sew operation, sometimes inside the boat plant and more often a Tier 1 furniture or canvas fabricator, and the conversation is about whether the cushion dries out after a rain and whether the vinyl stains.
The third is the engine room, and what it buys is noise. Foam, mass barrier, and a wipeable facing, bonded into a composite, glued to the engine room overhead and bulkheads. The volume is small and the supplier list is short. Soundown has been the name in marine acoustics for decades; Pyrotek and Acoustical Solutions are the other two a builder is likely to name.
Structural core foam, the PVC and SAN board that goes into the hull laminate, is a different market and a different report. It is covered on the composites lens and is not repeated here.
The one genuinely new thing in marine foam in the last fifteen years is none of the three. Closed-cell EVA-type foam decking, the category SeaDek created and a dozen fabricators now compete in, took a material that did not exist in boats and put it on cockpit soles, swim platforms, gunwales, and helm pads across the industry, displacing teak and gelcoat non-skid on a generation of boats. It is the only part of this market that grew a new supply chain rather than inheriting one.
How the Supply Chain Is Structured
The OEM in this lens is the same roster the composites report carries: Brunswick, Malibu, Correct Craft, MasterCraft, Polaris Marine, White River, Groupe Beneteau North America, and the mid-size and small builders below them. They hold OEM rows written once and read by every lens. What differs here is which door the foam comes in.
Flotation foam goes straight to the OEM. There is no Tier 1 in the flotation path, because the pour happens on the hull line, minutes after the liner drops in, and nobody else can do it. What the builder buys is a formulated two-part system in drums, plus the meter-mix equipment and the technical service to keep the ratio right. That makes the flotation supplier a Tier 2 systems house: Foam Supplies, NCFI, General Plastics, and at the small end US Composites and the house brands. Behind them sit the MDI and polyol producers, Dow, BASF, Covestro, and Huntsman, as Tier 3.
Seating foam goes through a Tier 1. At the pontoon builders in Elkhart County the furniture is bought complete from Lippert Marine; at the fiberglass builders the cushions come from a cut-and-sew shop like Syntec in Rome, Georgia, or from an in-house upholstery department buying cut foam. Helm seats arrive as finished assemblies from Milsco and the seat makers. Those Tier 1s buy slabstock from FXI, molded cushions from Woodbridge, and closed-cell sheet from Sekisui Voltek and the converters. A foam supplier selling seating has to call on the Tier 1, not the boat builder.
Acoustic material goes both ways. Soundown and its competitors sell installed system designs and cut kits to builders and yards, which is a Tier 1 posture, and they sell sheet and roll stock to other fabricators, which is Tier 2. Soundown carries both rows for that reason.
Sealing foam is a converter business. Hatch gaskets, deck plate seals, and windshield frame tape are die-cut by UFP Technologies and regional converters from Armacell and Sekisui Voltek stock, and often arrive in the bag with the hatch or the deck plate rather than as a foam purchase order.
Decking is its own vertical. SeaDek and the fabricators that followed buy or import closed-cell sheet, laminate and texture it, cut it to each model's deck file, and ship it to the OEM, the dealer, or the owner. The boat builder buys a finished part.
Distribution matters more here than the tier map suggests. Composites One carries pour foam and dispensing equipment on the same truck as resin and glass. Fisheries Supply and Jamestown Distributors sell foam kits and sound insulation to the yards and small builders who will never see a systems house salesperson.
OEM Landscape
Sixteen OEM sourcing organizations buy in this lens, the same sixteen as the other marine reports, and their plants and brands are in the composites report. What is worth saying here is how the foam decision splits across them, because boat builders are not uniform on this the way they are on resin.
The outboard and aluminum builders are the flotation market. White River Marine (Tracker, Nitro, Ranger, Triton), Polaris Marine (Bennington, Godfrey), Barletta, Avalon, Sea Fox, and the sub-20-foot lines at Brunswick and Marine Products pour or fit flotation on nearly every hull they build. Tracker alone builds enough sub-20-foot aluminum and fiberglass boats to make White River one of the largest flotation foam buyers in North America. For these builders, foam is a line item on the bill of materials and a paragraph in the Coast Guard compliance file.
The pontoon builders are the seating market. A tritoon is a deck, some furniture, and two or three aluminum logs, and the furniture is most of the interior cost. Bennington, Barletta, Avalon, Harris, Crest, and Godfrey between them buy more cushion foam than the rest of the industry combined, and they buy it as finished furniture from Lippert Marine or as cut foam through their own upholstery shops.
The inboard and sterndrive builders are the acoustic market. Malibu, MasterCraft, Correct Craft, Regal, Chaparral, Cobalt, and the cruiser lines at Brunswick and Groupe Beneteau put an engine in the middle of the boat with people sitting around it, and the engine box liner is a part the customer opens and looks at. Above about 30 feet, with a generator aboard, the acoustic package stops being a liner and becomes a designed system.
The yacht builders, Viking foremost, are a small-volume, high-specification corner of all three. Viking builds its own interiors, specifies berth mattresses and engine room insulation to a standard closer to commercial practice, and is the kind of account an acoustic house wants because the content per boat is high and the specification, once written, stays.
The center console builders, Grady-White, Scout, Yellowfin, and Sea Fox, are where foam decking landed first and hardest, and where it is now close to universal on the cockpit sole and the helm pad.
