  • Radar-transparent coatingDOMINANT

    A radome in front of a 77 GHz radar has to look like part of the grille and be invisible to the sensor, and metal is not invisible to radar. The answer is a basecoat carrying a non-conductive effect pigment that reads bright to a customer and passes millimeter waves, applied at a controlled film build on a substrate of controlled thickness, because the whole stack is a dielectric the radar has to see through. Film build tolerance on this part is tighter than anywhere else in the paint shop.

  • Primer surfacerDOMINANT

    Primer surfacer is bought and applied as part of the same waterborne system as the color above it, which is why it sits on this row. It does three jobs: fills the surface so the topcoat reads flat, absorbs stone impact so a chip stops in the primer instead of reaching metal, and blocks the UV that would otherwise embrittle the e-coat. Removing it is the single largest cost reduction available in a paint shop, and every OEM that has done it has paid for it somewhere else.

  • Solid color basecoatDOMINANT

    On a solid color, basecoat is an opacity problem and nothing else. The coat has to hide the primer at the lowest film build that will do it, because film build is material cost and oven load, and it has to look the same at the A-pillar as at the quarter panel. Waterborne won North America under emissions pressure rather than on performance, roughly a decade after Europe, and solventborne solid color persists on lines that were never converted and on low-volume plants where the conversion cannot be justified.

  • Metallic and effect basecoatDOMINANT

    Metallic is where waterborne actually beat solventborne rather than merely replacing it. Flake orientation depends on how the film shrinks as the carrier leaves, and water leaves differently from solvent, giving a tighter and more parallel flake lay and a brighter flop. That is why the conversion stuck once it happened. It also made the process less forgiving: humidity in the booth now changes the appearance, so the air handling in a waterborne shop is a controlled variable rather than a comfort setting.

  • Two-tone and contrast roofDOMINANT

    A contrast roof is the same waterborne system applied twice with a mask and a demask between, and the cost is almost entirely labor and throughput rather than material. It consumes a second pass through color and clear at full line rate, plus two manual operations that are hard to automate because the mask has to follow a body seam. On a plant running at sixty jobs an hour this is the option that constrains the whole shop.

  • Fascia color and clearDOMINANT

    A fascia is painted in a different building, on a different line, from a different batch, and then has to match a steel body across a four millimeter shut line in daylight. That is the hardest color problem in the industry and it is managed with instrumented color control, tightly restricted flake lots, and in practice a tolerance that is negotiated rather than specified. Waterborne on both sides makes it easier; waterborne on one side and solventborne on the other makes it close to impossible.

    The premium system is closer to a body: an e-coat or powder primer, a waterborne metallic basecoat, and a clear, sometimes over a diamond-cut machined face that is left bright under the clear. It costs several times a powder-only wheel and it is what the customer is looking at in the configurator, which is why it survives every cost exercise.
