The reinforcement in a fuel feed hose carries the fire test as much as the pressure. SAE J1527 Type A hose must survive a two and a half minute flame test while carrying fuel, which means the reinforcement has to hold the hose together after the cover has burned off, and an ordinary textile braid does not. That requirement, not burst pressure, is what drives the reinforcement specification on the marine version of a hose that looks identical to its industrial cousin. It is the single clearest example in this report of a marine rating that an industrial supplier will assume it already meets and does not.

Wet exhaust hose is a reinforced construction and the reinforcement decides the two things a builder actually cares about: whether the hose collapses on a tight bend around a stringer, and whether it holds its shape under the vacuum a raw water pump pulls on a blocked intake. Aramid and high-tenacity yarn plies laid in a spiral or braid give the bend radius and the crush resistance; a wire helix is the alternative and is heavier, more expensive and prone to corroding from the inside in salt service. The elastomer is what gets specified and the yarn is what decides whether the installation works.
