Where Chrome Plating Is Used in North American Manufacturing

Decorative or hard chrome over nickel on metal or platable ABS for bright trim and wear surfaces. Used in 9 part families across 4 industries.

Automotive

6 PART FAMILIES
Exterior
  • GrilleCOMMON

Chrome over nickel on ABS for bright grilles; hexavalent chrome plating is under regulatory pressure and trivalent and PVD alternatives are moving in

Functional
  • Fastener and clip coatingLEGACY

Electroplating is ruled out on a high-strength fastener and the reason is hydrogen embrittlement: the plating bath drives atomic hydrogen into the steel, and above roughly 1000 MPa that hydrogen migrates to the grain boundaries and cracks the part days or weeks after assembly, in service, with no warning. Baking after plating reduces the risk and does not eliminate it. Zinc and aluminum flake coatings are applied as a dispersion and cured, with no bath and no hydrogen, which is why they took the segment. Electroplated zinc and chrome survive on low-strength hardware where the mechanism does not apply.

  • Radar-transparent coatingLEGACY

Real chrome plating in front of a radar is a non-starter: a continuous metal film reflects the signal and blinds the sensor. Laser-ablated discontinuous metal and PVD films thin enough to pass millimeter waves are the workarounds, and they are finicky and expensive. The simple version of this story is that the emblem on the front of a car with adaptive cruise is not made the way the same emblem was made in 2010.

Interior
  • Cupholder and trim bezelsCOMMON

Decorative chrome over platable ABS for bright rings and accents; the plating spec drives the ABS grade choice

Plastic Parts
  • Bright and plated trimDOMINANT

Decorative chrome on plastic is a copper, nickel, and chrome stack electroplated onto etched ABS or PC/ABS, and nothing else looks like it: the depth of image comes from the nickel layer under a chrome film measured in millionths of an inch. It is also under direct regulatory attack. Hexavalent chromium restriction under REACH has a defined sunset, US EPA and state action is moving the same way, and trivalent chrome does not quite match the color, reading slightly warmer. This is the live substitution in this report and it is being decided now, not eventually.

Underbody
  • Wheel coatingLEGACY

Chrome plated and chrome clad wheels are a legacy appearance tier that has largely moved to painted and machined finishes, driven by cost, by weight on a clad wheel, and by the same hexavalent chrome pressure that is reshaping bright trim. It survives in the accessory and heavy-duty truck channel.

Electronics

Molded Enclosure
  • Bezel and front frameCOMMON

Decorative chrome over platable ABS is still how a bright accent ring or logo bezel is made when the product has to look like metal and cannot afford to be. Only platable ABS grades work, which constrains the resin choice before the finish is chosen, and the plating line is a second supplier with its own lead time and its own scrap rate.

Heavy Truck & Off-Highway

1 PART FAMILY
Cab Exterior
  • Grille and grille surroundCOMMON

Decorative chrome over nickel on ABS is the bright finish the segment still expects on the front of the truck

Appliances

Cooking
  • Range knob and handle trimCOMMON

Decorative chrome over nickel on platable ABS for bright knobs and bezel rings; the plating spec drives the ABS grade choice, and hexavalent chrome phase-out is pushing programs to trivalent and to PVD
