Cold Formed Framing
  • Light gauge steel studDOMINANT

    The galvanizing on a stud is the whole durability story and it is specified by coating weight: G40 for interior partitions, G60 as a common default, G90 where the framing is exterior or in a wet or coastal environment, and heavier where a specifier has been burned. The consequence of getting it wrong shows up years later inside a finished wall, which is the worst place for a corrosion problem, and it is why exterior cold formed framing in coastal markets is one of the few places in this industry where the galvanizing decision is enforced by inspection rather than left to the purchase order.

    Track carries the same galvanized coating weight logic as the stud it receives, and for a practical reason beyond corrosion: the bottom track sits on the slab, and a slab is wet during construction and can stay damp afterward. A bottom track at G40 on a below-grade or slab-on-grade wall in a humid climate is a known failure, which is why specifications routinely call heavier coating on the bottom track than on the studs above it, and why substituting to match the stud is the wrong economy.

    G90 galvanizing is the baseline and the reason is specific to modern lumber. When the wood preservative industry moved off CCA to ACQ and copper azole around 2004, the copper content of treated lumber roughly tripled, and copper in wet contact with zinc is a galvanic cell. Connectors that had lasted decades in CCA lumber began corroding in ACQ, and the codes and the manufacturers responded with heavier galvanizing, proprietary coatings, and stainless for severe exposure. Anyone selling connectors into treated lumber has to know which preservative the job is using, and most buyers do not.

    Inland, G90 galvanizing is the standard and the proprietary heavier coatings sit between G90 and stainless in both performance and price. The commercially interesting part is that the manufacturers have used coating grade as a product ladder: the same stamped geometry is sold at three corrosion levels and three prices, with the evaluation report covering all of them. That is a coating-as-product strategy and it rhymes with the coil coating story in roofing, which is the recurring theme of this report: in building products, what protects the steel is usually worth more than the steel.

    Strap and holdown galvanizing follows the same ladder as the rest of the connector line, with one wrinkle worth knowing: holdowns are often embedded in or bear against concrete, and concrete is alkaline and wet for a long time. That drives heavier coating or stainless in conditions that look dry from the outside, particularly at mudsill and post base connections, which is where the load path reaches the foundation and where a corroded connector cannot be inspected or replaced without demolition.

    Strut is sold in a coating ladder that maps exactly to environment: plain or painted for dry interior, pre-galvanized for general use, hot-dip galvanized after fabrication for exterior and wet locations, and stainless for corrosive service. Pre-galvanized channel has unprotected cut ends and unprotected slot edges, which is fine inside a ceiling and is a failure in a parking garage or a wastewater plant, and hot-dip after fabrication is the answer because it coats the cuts. Getting this wrong is one of the most common and most expensive corrosion mistakes in mechanical support.

    Grid steel is galvanized before it is painted, at light coating weight for ordinary interiors and heavier where the ceiling is in a pool enclosure, a commercial kitchen, a food plant, or an exterior soffit. Those are the environments where a corroded grid stains the acoustic panels below it and the whole ceiling has to come out, so the coating weight decision is made against a humidity and chemical exposure judgment rather than a price. Aluminum or stainless grid is the answer above a pool, where chloramine attacks both zinc and paint.

    Galvannealed sheet, an A60 zinc-iron alloy coating annealed after galvanizing, is the standard substrate for hollow metal, and the reason is paintability. Ordinary hot-dip galvanized has a spangled, slick surface that shop primer and field paint struggle to hold, while galvannealed has a matte, iron-rich surface that paints like cold rolled steel while still carrying zinc protection. Specifications call galvannealed for exterior frames and for any interior opening in a wet area, and plain cold rolled steel survives on dry interior work where the price gap decides.

    Here the metallic coating choice splits by end use in a way the standing seam family does not. G90 galvanized under ASTM A653 is preferred for agricultural and livestock buildings because zinc keeps protecting a cut edge and a scratched rib in the ammonia and moisture of a confinement barn, where Galvalume corrodes at the cut. Galvalume wins on industrial and commercial roofs for its longer atmospheric life. A supplier that recommends Galvalume into a poultry house on a corrosion chart will lose the account on the first warranty claim, and that distinction is not obvious from the specification sheet.

  • Standing seam roof panelCOMMON

    The metallic coating under the paint is Galvalume, 55 percent aluminum and 45 percent zinc, at AZ50 or AZ55 coating weight under ASTM A792, and it is what makes the substrate outlast the paint. Galvalume beat plain galvanized in this family decisively: the aluminum in the alloy layer forms a barrier that slows corrosion several times over G90 zinc in atmospheric exposure, which is why the substrate warranty on a Galvalume panel runs 25 years and a galvanized one does not get written. The one place it loses is a cut edge in a wet, alkaline, or animal-confinement environment, where zinc self-heals and Galvalume does not.

    Cam blocks, hinge bodies on premium doors, handle mounting bosses and latch housings are zinc die castings where the geometry is three-dimensional enough that a stamping would need four parts and three welds. The casting is the castings-forgings lens; it is here because the stamped-versus-cast decision on a hinge is made part by part and a stamper that cannot say which side of the line a part falls on will quote the wrong ones

  • Tubular handleCOMMON

    Handle end caps, standoffs, mounting bosses and the small decorative hardware around them are zinc die castings, chrome or PVD finished. They are where the perceived weight of a premium handle actually comes from: a hollow tube with heavy cast ends feels more substantial in the hand than the same tube with plastic caps, and that is a deliberate design choice, not an accident
