Where E-Glass Long Fiber (LFT) Is Used in North American Manufacturing

Long glass fiber compounded into thermoplastics for structural injection molding. Used in 12 part families across 6 industries.

Automotive

4 PART FAMILIES
Electrical
  • Battery trayEMERGING

Long glass gives a molded tray enough stiffness and impact strength for the pack floor; the reinforcement that makes thermoplastic trays plausible

Exterior
  • Underbody shieldDOMINANT

Long glass gives a large flat panel the stiffness to resist flutter at speed and the impact strength to survive a curb strike

  • Tailgate and liftgate innerDOMINANT

Long glass gives the inner the creep resistance to hold the hinge and latch loads and the strut loads over vehicle life

Interior
  • Instrument panel substrateDOMINANT

Long fiber gives the creep and heat sag resistance a 1.5 meter retainer needs at 90 C dash-top temperatures, and the dimensional stability to hold a Class A skin flush to the pillars

Heavy Truck & Off-Highway

1 PART FAMILY
Cab Exterior
  • Fender and quarter fenderEMERGING

LFT-PP delivers the impact and creep resistance for a bolt-on fender that talc-filled PP cannot

RV & Powersports

2 PART FAMILIES
PWC & Snow
  • Snowmobile hoodEMERGING

Long-glass PP hoods and panels; stiffer than unfilled PP without the weight of SMC

Powersports Body
  • Cargo bedEMERGING

Long-glass PP structural beds that carry payload without steel reinforcement

Packaging

2 PART FAMILIES
Tape and Strapping
  • Filament strapping tapeDOMINANT

Continuous glass filaments embedded in the adhesive layer are what make this tape a strapping product rather than a sealing product: the filaments carry 100 to 600 pounds per inch of width in tension while the backing and adhesive just hold them in place and to the package. It unitizes bundles, holds an appliance door shut through a drop test, and reinforces a case closure that a sealing tape could not hold, and it competes against steel and polyester strapping rather than against other tapes.

  • Water activated paper tapeCOMMON

Reinforced water-activated tape carries fiberglass yarn in a cross pattern between two paper plies, which gives it the tensile to close a heavy case and the tamper evidence of a fiber bond at once. It is the premium end of the format and the version that competes directly with filament tape on heavy shippers.

Lawn, Garden & Outdoor Power

1 PART FAMILY
Mower
  • Mower deck shellEMERGING

Long glass fiber is what makes a composite deck structurally credible. Short glass gives stiffness but not the notched impact strength a blade strike demands, and long fiber at 30 to 40 percent gives a molded deck the spindle boss stiffness and the impact tolerance a stamped deck has at similar weight

Energy & Storage

2 PART FAMILIES
Cell & Module
  • Module end plateEMERGING

Long-fiber PA66 is what makes a polymer end plate credible at all: the fiber length carries the bolt-through bearing load and the creep resistance that short glass gives up at pack temperature.

Pack & Enclosure
  • Enclosure panelEMERGING

Long-fiber reinforcement is what lets a composite panel meet the structural requirement rather than merely the cosmetic one, and the flame rating comes from the compound rather than from a coating.
