    Expanded polystyrene end caps and corner blocks are still the cost floor for appliances, televisions, and furniture: they mold to the product contour, weigh almost nothing, and cushion at a cost no alternative matches. Retailer take-back policy and state foam restrictions, not performance, are what is shrinking the category.

    Foam and sheet polystyrene was the meat tray, the bakery tray, and the egg carton for forty years on cost and insulation alone. Foodservice foam bans in California, New York, Washington, Maryland, Colorado, Oregon, and a long list of cities took the foodservice half away, and retailers took much of the rest on their own.
