Marine fuel feed hoseCOMMON
The fluoroelastomer barrier layer inside a marine fuel hose exists because of EPA evaporative emission rules for marine fuel systems, and it changed the product completely. Nitrile alone cannot meet the permeation limit with ethanol-blended fuel, so the modern Type A1 hose is a laminate with a thin FKM or fluoropolymer barrier bonded inside a nitrile tube and under a reinforced cover. The barrier is a small fraction of the mass and a large fraction of the cost, and it introduced a bonding and delamination failure mode that a single-material hose did not have. It is also why marine fuel hose prices moved and never came back.

The fluoroelastomer barrier reached fill and vent hose for the same EPA reason it reached feed hose, and on fill hose the permeation argument is stronger rather than weaker: a fill hose has a much larger surface area and a much thicker wall than a feed line, so it was the dominant permeation path in a boat fuel system before the barrier constructions arrived. The consequence for a supplier is that the fill hose is now a technically demanding laminate rather than a commodity extrusion, and the number of producers who can actually make it fell sharply when the rules changed.

FKM appears on the hydraulic steering cylinder rod seals of larger vessels and on any installation running synthetic or fire-resistant hydraulic fluid, which attacks nitrile. It is also the specification when the steering system runs hot, which happens more often than it should on installations where the power unit shares an engine compartment with no ventilation. The cost is roughly an order of magnitude over NBR and the justification is never the seal itself: it is that pulling a rudder to replace a five dollar seal is a four figure yard bill, and the second-cheapest seal in the boat is the one you only install once.

Fluoroelastomer impellers are a small, real and growing niche on high-output diesels and on installations where exhaust gas recirculation or a close-coupled heat exchanger raises the pump inlet temperature past what nitrile will take for a full season. They cost several times a nitrile impeller and they are specified by the engine maker rather than chosen by the owner. The interesting commercial fact is that the aftermarket rarely follows: an owner replacing an impeller buys the cheapest one the parts counter has in the right shape, which is a warranty problem the engine makers have not solved.

Refrigerant Circuit
Compressor shaft sealDOMINANT
A dynamic shaft seal in refrigerant service is the hardest elastomer problem in the industry, and FKM owns it because the combination of conditions eliminates almost everything else. The lip runs against a rotating shaft at discharge temperature in refrigerant-saturated POE oil, with the refrigerant dissolved into the elastomer the whole time. A compound that survives static immersion can still fail dynamically when frictional heating at the lip pushes the interface temperature well past bulk oil temperature. FKM holds modulus and compression set at that interface temperature and resists the oil, and on open-drive and semi-hermetic compressors it is the specification. The practical consequence for a supplier is that this part is not sold on price at all: the cost of the seal is trivial against the cost of a refrigerant loss that empties a commercial charge into the atmosphere and brings an EPA leak repair requirement with it.
Service valve sealCOMMON
FKM on the service valve stem and cap seals of commercial and higher-tier residential equipment, where discharge temperature is higher and the manufacturer would rather pay for the compound than field a leak claim. It also shows up as the upgrade path on units sold into hot climates, where the combination of ambient and discharge temperature pushes an HNBR seal near its continuous service ceiling. Its problem here is the same as everywhere else on the refrigerant side: cost, and a PFAS question the OEM regulatory group is now asking.
Line set flare and union sealCOMMON
FKM flare gaskets and bonded washers on commercial line sets and on the premium residential kits where the OEM ships the seal with the equipment rather than leaving it to the installer. Specified for the same discharge temperature margin as elsewhere, and worth the cost only where the manufacturer controls the installation kit. On a field-sourced fitting the installer buys whatever the wholesaler stocks, which is almost always the cheaper compound, and the specification is a suggestion.
Expansion valve O-ringCOMMON
FKM is specified where discharge-side temperature or lubricant aggressiveness exceeds what HNBR tolerates, typically on the high side of a heat pump running low ambient defrost and on commercial equipment with higher discharge temperatures. It resists the POE lubricant better than anything else and holds compression set at temperatures HNBR gives up at. Two things keep it from taking the application outright. It is several times the cost of HNBR at the same durometer and the same size, which is real money on a part used by the hundred in every unit. And it is a PFAS, which means the compound behind it is under a regulatory cloud that HNBR is not, at exactly the moment the industry is reopening every refrigerant seal specification. A supplier proposing FKM into a new A2L platform in 2026 is asking the OEM to accept a second requalification later.
Schrader core sealCOMMON
FKM cores marketed as the premium replacement, particularly for high-temperature and commercial service and for the A2L-rated service tools now entering the channel. The performance argument is real and the market is a wholesale counter, so the sale is made on packaging, brand, and the distributor relationship rather than on a data package. That is an unfamiliar sales motion for a material supplier used to selling into a qualification process, and it is worth recognizing before building a plan around this part family.

FKM on commercial and applied pumps handling high-temperature water, condenser water with aggressive treatment chemistry, or process fluids; also the standard secondary seal behind a mechanical seal face where John Crane and its competitors set the specification. It is specified on chemical resistance and temperature rather than on cost, and on an applied pump the seal set is a small fraction of a large capital item, so the cost argument that governs residential parts barely registers.
