Acoustic Nonwoven

    Kenaf, hemp and wood fiber composites appear as trunk trim and load floor substrates, compression molded with a polypropylene or polyester binder into a rigid board that is then faced with a nonwoven. The argument is weight and renewable content: a natural fiber board is lighter than a filled polypropylene one at equal stiffness and it carries a genuinely biogenic carbon story. The problems are moisture uptake, odor, and variability in a feedstock that is an agricultural product, and all three are why it has been on the edge of breaking through for twenty years without quite doing it. European programs use it more than North American ones.

Floor Covering

    Cotton shoddy, the recycled textile fiber batt that used to be the default automotive underlay, is still in use and is genuinely interesting again. It is the cheapest acoustic fiber available, it is made from post-industrial and post-consumer textile waste, and its circularity story is stronger than recycled PET because the feedstock is waste nobody else wants. Its problems are consistency, moisture uptake, odor and mold risk, and a VOC profile that varies with whatever went into the feedstock. Binder chemistry has improved all of that, and a supplier with a controlled feedstock and a low emission binder has a real argument to make on a cost driven program.

Barrier and Protective Apparel

    Crepe paper wrap is the incumbent this category displaced and it has not entirely gone: it is inexpensive, it drapes well around an awkward tray and it is still used in some settings and much of the world. It tears, it is weakened by moisture, and its barrier performance after a cycle is worse than SMS by a margin that is easy to demonstrate, which is how polypropylene took the market. The honest reading is that paper lost on performance rather than on cost, which is rare in this report.

    The absorbent wick at the far end of the strip is a thick cellulose pad and it is the pump of the whole device: capillary flow continues only while the wick has capacity left, so wick volume sets how much sample can be driven past the test line and therefore sets the sensitivity. It is the cheapest component in the assembly and it is a common cause of failure when someone value-engineers it, because a wick that saturates early stops the flow and truncates the reaction.

    A disposable underpad is fluff pulp and superabsorbent polymer between a permeable cover and an impervious backsheet, and it is bought on a number almost nobody outside the category knows: absorbency under load, meaning how much fluid the pad holds while a patient is lying on it, not how much it holds in a beaker. The two numbers diverge enormously, most datasheets quote the flattering one, and a facility that buys on the beaker number gets skin integrity incidents. That gap between the published specification and the clinical reality is the best entry point in this part family.

Wound Care and Absorbent

    The absorbent mass of a dressing core, an underpad or an incontinence product is defibrated bleached softwood kraft pulp, called fluff pulp, mixed with superabsorbent polymer particles and formed into a web. The pulp is the structure and the wicking medium; the superabsorbent is the capacity. This is by a wide margin the largest fiber tonnage in this report and it is almost never discussed, because it is bought by the bale on a commodity contract by people who are not in the room when a device specification is written.

    Woven cotton gauze is still, by unit count, the highest volume wound care product in the world, and it is essentially unchanged in a century. It is bleached cotton in a leno or plain weave at a stated thread count, folded, cut and sterilized. There is no technical moat and there is no domestic manufacturing to speak of: this is an import category, made in Asia at a price nobody in North America can match, and it is on every hospital contract because clinicians will not give it up.

    Wool is the premium contract upholstery fiber and it is specified for reasons polyester cannot answer: it is naturally flame resistant without a treatment, it recovers from crushing, it feels like money, and it ages into something rather than out of something. The cost is roughly double and the lead time comes from Europe, which is why it lands on the executive and lounge grades rather than on the volume task chair

Case and Carton

    The substrate is quietly the hardest problem in the category. Recycled content in corrugated has risen steadily, and recycled fiber bonds worse: shorter fibers, more fines, more surface size and coating carried through from the last life. A hot melt qualified on virgin liner five years ago can fail fiber tear on the same case code today with nothing changed but the board. A supplier that can show fiber tear data across a range of recycled content is selling something a price list cannot answer.

    Fiber tear is the entire acceptance criterion: pull the seam apart and the paper has to fail, not the glue line. That makes the board the specification and the adhesive the variable. Coated one side, clay coated, recycled, and barrier-coated boards each need a different answer, and a carton plant running four board grades runs four adhesives whether or not it admits it.

Labeling and Decoration

    Wet glue on glass is still a large business and it is the one place in the atlas where the adhesive is an agricultural product. Casein, from milk protein, holds the returnable and refillable beer bottle because it survives the wet, cold, condensing surface of a filled bottle and then releases cleanly in the hot caustic bottle washer, which is exactly what a returnable system requires. Dextrin and starch adhesives take the non-returnable glass and the paper label work. The buying argument here is stability, odor, and machine cleanup rather than chemistry.

    Paper facestock is still the volume answer wherever the container does not need a film: food, household, pharmacy, logistics, and the entire variable information category. Glassine and supercalendered kraft liners carry most paper constructions. The recyclability argument runs the other way here than it does on film, because a paper label on a paper package is the cleanest outcome on any EPR fee schedule and a paper label on a PET bottle is one of the worst.

    Direct thermal paper carries most linerless volume today because the format took hold first in logistics, retail weigh-scale, and food service labeling, where the label is printed at the point of application and nobody needs a long shelf life. Moving linerless into prime labeling on consumer packages is the growth thesis and it is unproven at volume.

    Paper and molded fiber padded mailers are taking share directly from poly and poly-lined mailers on retailer sustainability commitments, despite being heavier and worse in rain, because curbside recyclability is what the buyer is now scored on.

Rigid Food

    Molded pulp is the default egg carton again: it is made from recycled newsprint, it is compostable and curbside recyclable nearly everywhere, it cushions well, and it prints acceptably. It won the category back from foam on regulation and retailer policy rather than on performance.

Tape and Strapping

    Kraft paper tape with a starch gum is the fastest growing format in carton sealing, and the reason is a single property: it bonds into the fiber of the case rather than sticking to the surface, which makes it both tamper evident and curbside recyclable with the box. No separation step, no plastic on a fiber package, and a visible sign if someone has opened the carton. It needs a water-activated dispenser rather than a tape gun, which is the capital barrier, and the e-commerce shippers converting to it are doing so on brand and EPR grounds as much as on function.

  • Void fill and dunnage sealingEMERGING

    Paper dunnage and paper padded mailers are displacing plastic void fill on the same EPR and brand grounds as water-activated tape, and they bring their own adhesive problem: a paper mailer needs a closure that does not compromise the fiber stream, which means a starch or water-based adhesive rather than the PSA strip the plastic version uses.
