    The clearest material substitution in the modern vehicle, and the one that should be read first. Wheel arch liners were injection molded polypropylene for decades: a hard shell whose job was keeping stone and spray off the body. Molded needlepunched PET replaced it, and it won on four axes at once. It is lighter, typically by 30 to 50 percent, which is a direct fuel economy and range benefit. It absorbs tire and road noise at the source instead of reflecting it into the wheel house, which is worth one to three decibels of interior road noise and is the single cheapest acoustic gain available on most vehicles. It costs less to tool, because a thermoformed felt tool is a fraction of an injection mold. And it is made from recycled bottle flake, so it improves the recycled content number while it does the other three. Material substitutions almost always trade one of those against another. This one did not, and that is why it went from novelty to near universal in about fifteen years.

    Underbody shields exist for aerodynamics first: closing out the floor pan so air passes under the vehicle cleanly is worth real drag reduction, and on a battery electric vehicle drag is range. Molded nonwoven panels do that job and absorb road noise at the same time, where a smooth molded plastic panel does the aerodynamic job and reflects the noise back at the floor pan. The engineering constraint is water and debris: a panel under the vehicle takes standing water, road salt and stone impact, and a felt that holds water gains weight, freezes and eventually sags. The answer is hydrophobic fiber treatment and drainage geometry, and it is exactly the kind of detail that separates a supplier who has done this from one who has not.

    The hood liner does two jobs: it absorbs engine noise before it radiates out through the hood, and it insulates the hood outer panel so its paint does not bake. Needlepunched PET took this location from fiberglass, and the reasons are as much about manufacturing and handling as about performance. Fiberglass hood liners shed, they irritate the skin of the assembly operators who install them, they have to be faced to contain the fiber, and they cannot be recycled with anything. PET felt does the same acoustic job, molds more cleanly, handles safely and carries recycled content. The constraint is temperature: a PET felt has a real upper limit and on a high output engine, particularly with a turbocharger under the hood, it needs a facing or a high temperature fiber blend.

    This part family is where the central NVH argument of the last twenty years actually lives, so it is worth stating plainly. The classical dash treatment is a barrier system: a heavy mass layer decoupled from the sheet metal by a soft spring layer, which reflects sound energy back rather than letting it through. The dissipative alternative is a graded airflow resistive nonwoven that converts acoustic energy to heat as air moves through the fiber structure, absorbing it rather than reflecting it. Dissipative systems weigh markedly less for comparable interior noise, and they perform better at the high frequencies that dominate an electric powertrain, where a barrier system is tuned for the low frequency engine orders that no longer exist. Barrier systems still win where there is a large low frequency source and where the sheet metal has holes in it, because a barrier tolerates a leak and an absorber does not. Most current programs are hybrid, and the direction is toward absorption.

    Trunk side trim, wheel house covers, load floor facings and spare tire covers are the largest nonwoven area in the vehicle after the floor, and they are the most forgiving application on this lens: the surface is visible but not scrutinized, the durability requirement is modest, and the acoustic contribution is genuine because a trunk is a large cavity coupled to the cabin. Molded needlepunch PET does all of it in one part, taking the shape of the wheel house and the quarter panel directly from the tool. It is also where the highest recycled content percentages in the vehicle are achieved, because nothing about the application punishes fiber variability the way a Class A surface does.

Floor Covering

    The underlay between the carpet and the floor pan is a needlepunched or resinated polyester fiber batt, and its job is decoupling: it separates the mass of the carpet and heavy layer from the vibrating floor pan so the pan cannot drive the carpet as a radiating surface. The properties that matter are airflow resistance and dynamic stiffness, neither of which appears on a general purpose felt datasheet, and the thickness is set by the NVH model rather than by any comfort consideration. Density is graded across the floor: thicker under the front footwells where road and powertrain input is highest, thinner at the rear. A supplier who can deliver a graded density batt in one piece is selling a manufacturing capability, not a material.

    Needlepunched polyester felt with an acrylic PSA is the standard anti-squeak strip on lids, tracks, and glass runs: dense enough to hold shape, soft enough to silence a plastic-to-plastic contact

Seating Textiles

    Needlepunched polyester felt is used where the carrier is also doing a comfort or a distribution job: spreading the heat more evenly, adding a little loft under the cover, or acting as a slip layer over the foam. It is heavier and loftier than a thermally bonded nonwoven and therefore consumes more of the thickness budget between cover and pad, which is tighter than it sounds on a seat designed around a specific H-point. It appears more on ventilated and climate seats, where the assembly is already thicker and the felt can also carry air.
