Floor Covering
  • Carpet backing and heavy layerCOMMON

    A heat set polyethylene backing is applied to the carpet to lock the tufts, give the assembly enough body to be handled, and, critically, to make it moldable: the backing softens in the press, the carpet takes the shape of the floor pan, and the backing sets and holds it. The specification that matters is the softening window, because a backing that softens too early slumps before the tool closes and one that softens too late does not conform into the deep draws at the tunnel and the footwells. It is a process material sold on a temperature curve, which is a very different sale from selling resin by the pound.

Barrier and Protective Apparel
  • Surgical drape fabricCOMMON

    The fenestration area, meaning the opening around the incision, is reinforced with a polyethylene film laminate because that zone will be standing in fluid for the length of the procedure and strike-through there is a sterile field breach rather than an inconvenience. The film is usually laminated to a nonwoven face so it is not slippery and does not pool. Perforation resistance matters more than the datasheet suggests: a drape gets clamped, retracted and instrumented through, and a film that tears at a clamp has failed in the one square metre where failure counts.

    Fluid impervious boot covers, the knee-high ones worn in orthopedic and trauma cases where the floor genuinely gets wet, are a polyethylene film or a film laminate with a non-skid sole treatment. The specification that matters is the sole, because an impervious boot cover on a wet tile floor is a fall hazard, and a supplier who has not thought about traction has built a liability rather than a product.

    LDPE and its metallocene grades are the inner contact and sealant plies of a coextruded non-PVC film. The layer that touches the solution is chosen for the lowest extractable profile in the structure, and it is almost always a polyolefin rather than the barrier or the structural ply

    Polyolefin plies appear in the satellite bags, the overwrap, and the tubing segments that are sealed and stripped during component separation, where no long-term cell contact happens and the phthalate argument does not apply

    The sealant ply is LDPE or a metallocene polyethylene, chosen because the seal has to be strong, consistent across the jaw, and peelable without fibre tear. Seal integrity is the packaging engineer's primary validated characteristic, so the sealant resin is locked once the process window is proven

    The peel is a coating, not the substrate. An LDPE, EVA, or acrylic heat-seal layer on the underside of the lid is tuned to open at a specified force window; too weak and the barrier is not proven, too strong and a gowned nurse tears the web and drops the device. That window is the deliverable

Patient Environment
  • Underpad and incontinenceCOMMON

    The backsheet is a polyethylene film, and the current argument in the category is whether it should be breathable. A microporous or monolithic breathable backsheet lets water vapour out and keeps liquid in, which measurably improves skin microclimate under a patient who is not moving; it costs more and it makes some purchasers nervous about containment. Reusable underpads are the other pressure on this whole family and they are gaining in long term care on a straight cost per use argument.

Sterile Packaging

    The seal on a chevron pouch is made on the packaging line, not bought as a part, and the sealant ply is what makes it: a polyethylene or polyolefin layer coextruded onto the film that melts in a controlled window and bonds to itself or to the porous web. Seal integrity is the sterile barrier, so the seal is validated as a process under ISO 11607-2 with temperature, pressure, and dwell as the validated parameters, and a change of resin supplier is a change to a validated process.

Wound Care and Absorbent
  • Adhesive bandage backingCOMMON

    Polyethylene film backings hold the waterproof end of the consumer and institutional bandage market, where the claim is that the dressing survives a shower. They are cheap, they are genuinely impervious and they breathe far less than a polyurethane film, which is the trade the buyer is making whether or not they know it. On a twenty four hour wear a polyethylene backed dressing on sweaty skin will lift at the edges, which is the most common complaint in the category.

  • Wound contact layerLEGACY

    Perforated polyethylene film over a cotton pad is the original non-adherent dressing and it is still sold in enormous volume because it costs almost nothing. It is non-adherent in the sense that it sticks less than plain gauze, which is a low bar: the perforations let exudate through and granulation tissue grows into them, so removal is not atraumatic, it is merely less traumatic. It holds the low acuity, high volume, price-led end of the category and it will keep holding it.

Flexible
  • Stand-up pouchDOMINANT

    The sealant ply and, increasingly, the whole structure. Mono-material polyethylene pouches built from oriented PE and LLDPE sealant are the industry answer to flexible recyclability: one resin, store drop-off eligible, and now accepted by a growing number of EPR fee schedules at a materially lower rate than a mixed laminate.

  • Shrink film and bundlingDOMINANT

    Collation shrink is LDPE and LLDPE blends chosen on shrink force, hot tack, and clarity. It is the cheapest way to unitize a twelve pack or replace a corrugated case, and the printed version is now doing the marketing job the case used to do.

  • Pallet stretch wrapDOMINANT

    Cast and blown LLDPE, usually metallocene, is the single largest polyethylene film tonnage in this industry. The specification is cling, puncture resistance at the pallet corner, and holding force after 24 hours, and the commercial fight is down-gauging: every micron removed from a film that wraps every pallet in North America is a real number.

  • Vacuum barrier bagDOMINANT

    The inner sealant and outer abuse plies are polyethylene: LLDPE or an ionomer for seal-through-contamination at the bag mouth, and a shrink-oriented PE outer that pulls tight to the product on the hot water shrink tunnel.

  • Snack and confection filmCOMMON

    LLDPE and metallocene LLDPE sealant layers are what actually make the package: they seal through product contamination at high line speed, which is the single largest cause of leakers on a snack line.

  • Lidding filmCOMMON

    The peel is a coating, not the substrate: a coextruded or lacquered polyethylene or EVA sealant layer tuned to open at a specified force window against the tray flange resin. Too weak and the seal fails in distribution, too strong and the consumer tears the web.

Flexible Lamination
  • Film laminating adhesiveEMERGING

    The mono-material answer is to build the whole laminate from polyethylene: an oriented or machine-direction-oriented PE outer web laminated to a PE sealant web, so the finished laminate goes into the store drop-off polyethylene film stream as one material. It is a harder adhesive problem than it sounds. PE has low surface energy, the outer web has far less heat resistance than PET, and the laminating adhesive now has to survive a sealing jaw that is running close to the melt point of the film it is bonding. Adhesives formulated specifically for all-PE structures are where the technical competition in this lens has moved.

  • Drum and box linerDOMINANT

    A drum or gaylord liner is LDPE or LLDPE film chosen on puncture resistance, low-temperature flexibility, and the absence of anything that will migrate into the product. It is the cheapest way to make a reusable steel or fiber container food or pharmaceutical grade for one trip.

Protective
  • Air pillow and void fillDOMINANT

    Inflate-on-demand pillows are coextruded LDPE and LLDPE web converted at the pack station, which means the shipper buys a roll of flat film instead of a truckload of air. The film specification is seal integrity and slow leak-down over a week in transit.

  • Protective mailerDOMINANT

    The plain poly mailer carries most apparel e-commerce because it weighs a fraction of a box, costs a fraction of a box, and ships at a lower dimensional weight. It is also store drop-off recyclable as a mono-material PE film, which is a real advantage now that bubble-lined paper mailers are not.

  • Pump and trigger dispenserCOMMON

    The dip tube is LDPE or LLDPE because it has to stay flexible, resist kinking at the bottom of a bottle, and cut cleanly to length on the assembly line.

Tape and Strapping
  • Void fill and dunnage sealingDOMINANT

    Inflatable pillow and air cushion film is coextruded LDPE and LLDPE with a heat-sealed seam made on the packing line by the inflation machine itself, which means the seal quality is a function of a machine the packer owns rather than a material a converter shipped. A film that seals in a narrow temperature window will fail on a machine that has drifted, and the failure looks like a deflated pillow in a box at the customer.

Solar Module and Array
  • Backsheet lamination adhesiveEMERGING

    Coextruded polyolefin backsheets replace the adhesive-laminated three-layer construction with a single coextruded structure, which removes the delamination failure mode by removing the adhesive. That is worth stating plainly on a lens about adhesives: the clearest technical answer to the biggest field failure in solar is to delete the adhesive. It has not taken the market, because the fluoropolymer constructions have thirty years of field data and the coextruded ones do not, but the direction of travel is not ambiguous.
