Propeller shaft sealLEGACY
Natural rubber is the historical stave material in a water-lubricated cutless bearing and still appears in commercial and workboat service, where the bearing is a consumable and the priority is abrasion resistance against sand and grit in the cooling water rather than long-term chemical stability. NR has the best abrasion and tear resistance of any elastomer at this price and the worst ozone and oil resistance, which does not matter in a bearing permanently submerged inside a stern tube. Recreational construction has largely moved to nitrile compounds for the oil tolerance and the longer dry-run margin.
Propulsion
Marine engine mountDOMINANT
Marine engine mounts are bonded rubber-to-metal isolators and natural rubber takes them on dynamic properties that no synthetic matches at this price: the highest resilience, the lowest hysteresis and the best fatigue life under repeated compression. A marine mount does more than isolate. It carries the engine and transmission and sets the driveline alignment to the shaft coupling, which means creep under static load is a specification and not an afterthought, because a mount that settles three millimetres has misaligned the shaft and will chew a cutless bearing. The metal is the part that fails in service, not the rubber.

Anti-vibration
Engine mountDOMINANT
Natural rubber is the engine mount material because nothing else combines its fatigue life, low hysteresis, and tunable damping at the price; the mount is a bonded NR element between a steel or aluminum core and a housing, and a hydraulic mount adds a glycol chamber and a decoupler inside the same NR body; NR compounds are heat-limited to about 100 C, which is why the compound, the heat shield, and the mount position are designed together
Transmission mountDOMINANT
The transmission mount is tuned as one system with the engine mounts and uses the same bonded NR element for the same reasons: fatigue life under a continuous torque load and low damping so idle vibration does not reach the floor
Suspension bushingDOMINANT
Control arm, subframe, and stabilizer bushings are NR bonded between sleeves or pressed into the arm eye because the bushing works in torsion and cardanic flex for hundreds of millions of cycles, and NR at the right durometer gives the compliance the ride engineer wants with the lowest creep; the compound, the void pattern, and the sleeve geometry are what the Tier 1 sells
Strut mountDOMINANT
The strut top mount carries the spring and damper load into the body through a bonded NR element and a bearing; NR is chosen for the same fatigue and damping reasons as the engine mount, and the mount is tuned to filter road noise above 100 Hz while carrying the full corner weight
Exhaust hangerLEGACY
NR hangers on older and cost-led programs; heat aging and ozone limit them to positions far from the catalyst
Fluid
Brake hoseLEGACY
NR and NR/SBR tubes on pre-1980s hose, displaced by EPDM as brake fluid temperatures rose with disc brakes
CV bootLEGACY
NR and chloroprene boots on older vehicles and the aftermarket, torn by grit and ozone within a few years, which is why the OEMs moved to thermoplastics

Powersports
Handgrip and handlebar foamLEGACY
Natural rubber grips on older motorcycles and low-cost ATVs; displaced by TPE because TPE can be injection-molded in color without vulcanizing

Air Side
Blower motor mount isolatorCOMMON
Natural rubber where damping and fatigue life matter more than heat and ozone resistance. NR has the best combination of resilience and hysteresis of any common elastomer and it is the reference material for vibration isolation everywhere it can survive the environment. Inside a hot, ozone-exposed air handler cabinet it ages faster than EPDM, which is the trade the design engineer is making, and a blend or a well-protected NR compound is often the real answer rather than either extreme.
Vibration
Compressor mounting grommetCOMMON
Natural rubber grommets and sleeves where the damping and fatigue performance justify accepting the weathering penalty, usually with a heavy antiozonant package and often inside a sleeve or a cup that shields it. NR gives better loss factor and better fatigue life than EPDM at the same durometer, and in an application defined entirely by dynamic behavior that is a real advantage. The counterargument is a fifteen year outdoor life with direct UV and ozone exposure, which is the environment NR is worst at, and a cracked grommet transmits everything it was fitted to block.
Outdoor unit isolator padCOMMON
Natural rubber and NR-faced spring isolators under commercial rooftop and applied equipment, where the isolation requirement is engineered rather than assumed and where a mechanical engineer has calculated a static deflection and specified a mount to deliver it. NR gives the damping and the fatigue life the calculation wants, and on a rooftop the mount is usually inside a housing that shields it from direct UV. On a residential slab pad, unprotected, it is the wrong choice.

Flexible Lamination
Cold seal adhesiveCOMMON
The base is genuinely agricultural natural rubber latex, which brings an agricultural supply chain with it: price volatility tied to Southeast Asian plantation output, protein allergen concerns that matter to a food packer, and a shelf life on the coated roll measured in months. Synthetic cold seal systems exist and have been tried repeatedly for exactly these reasons, and none has matched the seal speed of the natural latex.
Who supplies it
Companies mapped at Tier 2 or Tier 3 selling elastomers into the 5 industries where Natural Rubber (NR) is used, largest first. At most 12 are listed. Tier and industry placement for each company is in the report for that market.
