Fuel & Water
  • Marine fuel feed hoseDOMINANT

    Marine fuel feed hose is nitrile at its core and the specification is a legal requirement rather than an engineering preference. USCG 33 CFR 183 Subpart J governs the fuel system and defers to SAE J1527 for hose, which defines Type A1 and A2 by fire resistance and permeation. The hose must carry the rating printed on the cover, the builder is inspected against that marking, and a supplier without the rating is not in the conversation regardless of how good the construction is. Nitrile provides the fuel resistance in the tube; it is the fire test and the permeation limit that decide the rest of the construction, and both push toward a multilayer hose.

  • Fuel fill and vent hoseDOMINANT

    Fill hose is a large-bore, low-pressure, thick-walled part and nitrile takes the tube for fuel resistance, but the duty that defines the family is mechanical. A dock attendant forces a nozzle into the deck fill several hundred times over the life of the boat, the hose is routed through a hard bend from deck to tank because there is nowhere else for it to go, and the cover lives under a deck hatch in the sun. Kink resistance and cover durability, not fuel compatibility, are what a fill hose fails on. It carries the same SAE J1527 rating family as feed hose and the same legal weight.

    Nitrile appears in sanitation hose constructions as the tube under or alongside the barrier layer, where it provides the chemical resistance to holding tank treatment chemicals, urine salts and the scale that precipitates out of them. Scale is the second failure mode of this family and the less discussed one: calcium deposits build on the tube wall, restrict the bore and eventually block the line, and a smoother, more chemically stable tube surface delays it by years. A supplier who can speak to scale as well as to odor is having a different conversation from everyone else in the category.

  • Rudder and steering gland sealDOMINANT

    The rudder stock gland is a slow rotary seal under the waterline with a hydraulic cylinder attached to it, and nitrile takes it because the seal sees both salt water on one face and hydraulic fluid on the other. Anything that swells in mineral-based hydraulic oil is out, which removes EPDM from the steering side of the joint entirely. The duty is unusual in one respect worth stating: the shaft moves a few degrees at a time, thousands of times a day, and then sits still for six months on the hard. Stiction after a long layup, not wear in service, is the complaint a rudder seal generates.

  • Thru-hull and seacock gasketCOMMON

    Nitrile takes the thru-hull gasket wherever hydrocarbons can reach it: fuel fill and vent fittings, engine exhaust outlets, and any penetration in the engine compartment where a diesel or gasoline film is a fact of life. The trade is explicit and every builder makes it the same way. NBR resists the fuel and fails on ozone; EPDM resists the ozone and swells in the fuel. On a fitting that sees both, the fuel wins the argument because a swollen gasket leaks immediately and an ozone-cracked one takes five seasons to leak. The correct answer is chloroprene, which does both adequately and neither excellently, and is what the industry actually uses.

  • Propeller shaft sealCOMMON

    Nitrile is the elastomer body of nearly every dripless shaft seal and the stave material of the modern water-lubricated bearing behind it. The seal is a rotating interface in salt water carrying a lubricating film of that same water, which rules out most of the elastomer catalog immediately: the compound has to resist water swell indefinitely, tolerate the trace oil and fuel that reach the bilge, and hold a dimensional set against a bellows that is compressed at installation and never relaxed. NBR does all of it at a price the market will pay. The actual sealing face is usually not elastomer at all, which is the point below.

Propulsion
  • Raw water pump impellerDOMINANT

    The raw water pump impeller is the highest-unit-count elastomer part in this report and the best illustration of its thesis. A flexible vane impeller runs in a housing with an interference fit, bends its vanes past a cam on every revolution, and is lubricated only by the water it is pumping. Run it dry for fifteen seconds and the vanes take a set or tear off and go downstream into the heat exchanger. Nitrile takes the volume because it holds the flex fatigue life against warm salt water, tolerates the oil film that reaches the bilge, and can be molded to a tight dimensional tolerance around a brass insert. It is a scheduled replacement item on every engine, which means the OEM specification is worth five to ten repeat sales over the life of the hull.

  • Sterndrive bellowsCOMMON

    Nitrile carries the shift cable and exhaust bellows of the same transom assembly, where oil and fuel exposure from the engine compartment side is continuous and the flex duty is lower than on the U-joint bellows. Specifying two different compounds inside one transom assembly looks wasteful and is correct: the U-joint bellows needs flex fatigue life and ozone resistance above everything, the shift bellows needs oil resistance, and a single compound that does both adequately is exactly the chloroprene compromise the taxonomy cannot express. An aftermarket bellows kit ships all three parts together because a yard pulling the drive replaces all of them at once.

  • Marine engine mountCOMMON

    Nitrile mounts are specified where the isolator sits in a bilge that holds diesel and oil, which on a commercial vessel or an older recreational installation is most of them. The dynamic properties are worse than natural rubber across the board and the durability in the actual environment is far better, because an NR mount standing in an oily bilge swells, softens and loses its rate. This is a recurring marine pattern worth stating once: the material that wins the engineering argument on a datasheet loses to the material that survives the bilge, and the bilge is not in the datasheet.

  • Service valve sealDOMINANT

    The service valve is the one refrigerant seal a technician touches on every single call, which changes the specification from a sealing problem to a handling problem. The stem packing has to seal a rotating, occasionally over-torqued stem after a decade in the weather, and the cap gasket has to reseal after being removed with a wrench by somebody in a hurry. HNBR is the default for the same refrigerant compatibility reasons as the expansion valve, with the added requirement that it tolerate repeated mechanical disturbance without taking a set that opens a leak path. This is where a compound that is technically adequate loses in the field: a compound with high compression set gives a slow leak that nobody finds for two years, and the OEM sees it as a warranty pattern rather than a material choice.

  • Line set flare and union sealDOMINANT

    The flare and union seal is a field-made joint, which makes it unlike every other seal in this report. A factory seal is installed once by a trained operator to a controlled torque; this one is installed by an installer on a roof in July, often over a flare that was cut with a worn tool. The elastomer has to accommodate a joint geometry that is out of tolerance more often than anyone admits, seal against refrigerant on the inside and weather on the outside, and hold for fifteen years without being touched again. HNBR carries it for refrigerant compatibility, and the design question is durometer: too hard and it will not conform to an imperfect flare, too soft and it extrudes under the pressure swing. The supplier insight is that the failure here is almost never the compound, it is the installation, and a seal that is more forgiving of a bad flare is worth more to the OEM warranty group than one that is technically better on a bench.

  • Expansion valve O-ringDOMINANT

    Refrigerant and lubricant compatibility is the controlling property here and nothing else comes close. The O-ring sits in a saturated mixture of refrigerant and polyol ester lubricant at pressures that swing from 80 to 400 psi every cycle, and the failure mode is not rupture, it is swell and extrusion: the refrigerant dissolves into the elastomer, the elastomer grows, and on the next pressure drop it explosively decompresses and blisters. HNBR is the default because the hydrogenation removes the double bonds that ordinary NBR loses to heat and to the more aggressive solvency of POE oil, and because it recovers its dimension after the swell rather than taking a permanent set. The second thing to understand is that the A2L transition is forcing requalification of seals that worked fine for thirty years. R-454B and R-32 are not chemically dramatic, but they are different enough in solvency and in operating discharge temperature that the compatibility data package behind an approved compound no longer covers the fluid the unit ships with, and a compatibility data package is the product. A supplier with soak, swell, and explosive decompression data on the new refrigerants and the new lubricants has something to sell. A supplier with the same compound and the old data does not.

  • Schrader core sealDOMINANT

    The valve core seat is the most frequently disturbed refrigerant seal on any installed system and the cheapest part in this entire report, which is exactly why it causes so much trouble. It is a few cents of elastomer holding a full system charge, it gets depressed by a gauge hose on every service call, and it is routinely left to seal after the technician has cross-threaded a cap onto it. HNBR is the standard seat material for refrigerant compatibility and for its resilience after repeated compression. The commercially interesting fact is that this part is sold overwhelmingly through the aftermarket channel rather than into OEM assembly, which means the compound decision is made by a core manufacturer selling to a wholesaler, not by an OEM engineer, and the buying criterion is a distributor line card rather than a qualification file.

  • Compressor shaft sealCOMMON

    HNBR takes the shaft seal on smaller and lower-duty compressors and on the static body and terminal seals of hermetic units, where the interface temperature stays inside its range and the cost difference against FKM is worth capturing. It is also where the A2L transition lands hardest, because a hermetic compressor terminal seal is a part nobody thought about for three decades and it is now on a requalification list at every compressor maker in the roster. The supplier opportunity is narrow but real: the compressor makers are running these programs now, the data requirement is specific, and the incumbent compound has no advantage it can point to other than history.

Water Side
  • Circulator pump sealCOMMON

    NBR secondary seals on lower-cost circulators and on closed-loop applications where the water chemistry is controlled and the temperature stays modest. It is cheaper than EPDM and it is entirely adequate in a well-maintained closed loop. It fails where the loop is not well maintained, which is most of them: makeup water introduces oxygen and chloride, the inhibitor package is never topped up, and NBR hardens where EPDM would have carried on. The upgrade conversation with a pump maker is therefore not about the specification, it is about the field return rate.

  • Heat exchanger gasketCOMMON

    NBR plate gaskets on oil, refrigerant-adjacent, and some process duties where hydrocarbon resistance is required and EPDM would swell. It is the standard alternative in the plate exchanger gasket catalog and the choice is made by the fluid on the plate rather than by cost. On the water side of an HVAC system it is the wrong answer, and the mistake happens when a distributor stocks one gasket kit and a technician fits it to whatever exchanger is in front of them.

  • Pipe union and flange gasketLEGACY

    NBR washers and union gaskets in hydronic, fuel gas, and non-potable service, and still sitting in a lot of wholesale bins where they are fitted to potable work by a plumber who grabbed the wrong bag. The chlorine and chloramine exposure that degrades NBR in potable service is the reason the industry moved, and the reason a jurisdiction inspecting a listed system will look for the marking on the fitting rather than the washer inside it.

  • PEX and push fitting O-ringLEGACY

    NBR O-rings persist in older compression and hose-connection fittings and in non-potable hydronic service, where the water is in a closed loop, the disinfectant residual is zero, and the certification does not apply. On potable water it is the material the industry moved away from: NBR has poor chlorine and chloramine resistance and hardens and cracks in years rather than decades. A fitting line still shipping NBR on the potable side is either serving a legacy installed base or has not been through a recent listing review, and either one is a conversation worth having with the engineering group.
