Where Polyamide 12 (PA12) Is Used in North American Manufacturing

Low-moisture, flexible nylon for fuel and air lines, tubing, and powder-bed printing. Used in 11 part families across 5 industries.

Automotive

5 PART FAMILIES
Fluid
  • Fuel hoseCOMMON

Multilayer PA12 tubing with an EVOH or fluoropolymer barrier replaced rubber on nearly every fuel feed and vapor line in the 2000s, leaving rubber only at the filler neck and the short flex joints; the plastic line permeates less, weighs less, and takes quick connectors

  • Coolant hoseEMERGING

Hybrid coolant lines that replace long rubber runs with molded PA12 or PA66 hard lines and short EPDM connectors, cutting mass and permeation on EV thermal loops; the fluid Tier 1s (Cooper Standard, TI, Hutchinson) sell these as a system and the rubber content per vehicle falls with each one

Harness Components
  • Convoluted tubing and conduitCOMMON

PA12 conduit sits between the two: better temperature and chemical resistance than PP, far lower moisture uptake than PA66, and more flexible than either, which matters on a tight underbody route. It is the usual answer on fuel and brake line protection runs where the conduit has to bend sharply and stay bent.

  • Cable tie and clipCOMMON

PA12 ties are specified where low-temperature impact matters most, because a PA66 tie installed at minus 30 C in a northern assembly plant is at genuine risk of cracking at the head. PA12 stays tough well below that and takes far less moisture, at a cost premium that only a cold-climate installation problem justifies.

High Voltage Harness
  • Flexible busbarCOMMON

PA12 is used as an insulating overmold or extruded sleeve on busbars that need mechanical protection as well as dielectric separation. It takes almost no moisture, stays flexible at low temperature, and bonds or shrinks tightly to a formed copper section without the stress cracking a stiffer nylon would show at the bend.

Appliances

1 PART FAMILY
Dishwashing
  • Dish rack and coatingCOMMON

Nylon 11 and 12 powder coating on premium racks: thinner, harder, and far more resistant to nicking and to hot-water softening than plastisol, and the reason a premium rack outlasts the machine

Medical Devices

2 PART FAMILIES
Devices
  • Endoscope housingCOMMON

PA12 and its block copolymers appear in the bending section covering and in the distal tip housings where the sheath must be thin, tough, and bondable to the tip assembly. Same durometer-gradient logic as a catheter, over a much longer part

Disposables
  • Catheter shaftDOMINANT

PA12 and its polyether block amide copolymers are the other half of the shaft business. The design language is a durometer gradient: a 72D proximal section for push, a 55D mid section, a 35D distal tip for trackability, all reflowed into one continuous shaft over a braid. That gradient is why a catheter company buys a resin family rather than a resin

Lawn, Garden & Outdoor Power

2 PART FAMILIES
Power Unit
  • Riding fuel tankCOMMON

Coextruded nylon barrier layer as the alternative to surface treatment on higher-specification tanks, and the route an OEM takes when it wants permeation performance it does not have to re-verify on every lot

Powered Handheld
  • Handheld fuel tankEMERGING

The multilayer route: a nylon barrier layer coextruded into the HDPE wall instead of a surface treatment, which holds permeation through the life of the tank rather than degrading as a treated surface can

Energy & Storage

1 PART FAMILY
Solar
  • Module backsheetLEGACY

Polyamide backsheets were the lower-cost, fluoropolymer-free answer of the early 2010s and they are the cautionary tale: field cracking and delamination pulled them out of specification and they are still being replaced on operating plants.
