  • Brake rotor and hardware coatingCOMMON

    Calipers and brake hardware take powder, where the part is larger, the appearance is deliberate on a performance program, and the temperature capability of the coating has to survive what a caliper sees. This is a visible, marketed finish in a way the rotor coating is not.

    Powder basecoat is the perpetual candidate. It has no solvent and no water, so the emissions and the energy case is overwhelming, and it has never reached body volume because color change is brutal, film build control over a complex body is difficult, and the appearance does not yet meet a premium standard. It has real body volume in Europe on primer rather than color. Treat any powder body topcoat claim as a pilot until a nameplate ships.

    Powder is the fleet and value answer on a wheel: a single thick layer, no solvent, excellent chip and corrosion performance, and a cost per wheel nothing else reaches. What it cannot do is the machined-face appearance a premium wheel is sold on, and it has a narrower color and effect range. A wheel program is priced tier by tier and the coating system is the tier.

Grid and Support
  • Suspended ceiling grid teeCOMMON

    Grid is coil coated white, and the white is a specification: the grid and the acoustic panel have to match in color and gloss, and the panel comes from a different production line and often a different plant. Any drift between them is visible across an open office ceiling under fluorescent or LED light, which is a punch list item that cannot be fixed without replacing material. That is a coil coating color control problem of the same kind as the architectural panel problem, on a product whose unit price is a fraction as high, which makes it a harder one.

    Painted and powder-coated strut serves two purposes that have nothing to do with corrosion. The first is fire protection identification and trade color coding, where red strut marks sprinkler support and colored systems distinguish services in a congested ceiling. The second is exposed architectural mechanical work, which has become common in restaurants, offices, and institutional buildings where the ceiling is deliberately left open and the support system is visible. That second market will pay for finish quality on a product that was designed to be hidden, and it is small, growing, and underserved.

    Architectural aluminum is finished three ways and the fight among them is commercially significant. Anodizing is an electrochemical oxide, extremely hard and limited in color. Liquid PVDF on extrusion is the specification default for color, matching the PVDF on the coil-coated panel beside it. Powder coat, in super-durable polyester and in fluoropolymer powder, has taken real share on cost, on film thickness control, and because it emits no solvent, and it now reaches AAMA 2604 and in some systems AAMA 2605. This is the one family in this lens where powder coat is literally the material and not a placeholder.

    Garage door coil is prepainted, typically a polyester or SMP system rather than PVDF, because the product is priced for residential retail and the door is mostly shaded by the opening it sits in. Two coating problems are specific to this family. The embossing operation stretches the film, so formability after cure matters more than on a flat panel. And dark colors on a large south-facing door reach high surface temperatures, which drives both the coating specification and the warranty language on fade and on panel warping.

  • Standing seam roof panelDOMINANT

    This is the product. A standing seam roof is sold on a paint warranty, and the warranty comes from the coil coater's system, not from the mill and not from the roll former. PVDF, a 70 percent Kynar or Hylar fluoropolymer over a primer, holds gloss and color for decades and is what a 30 or 40 year warranty is written against. Silicone modified polyester is roughly half the price, is harder and more abrasion resistant on a forming line, and chalks and fades faster in UV. That single choice moves the installed cost of a roof by a meaningful percentage and moves the warranty by two decades, and it is the central commercial question in this whole category.

  • Corrugated and ribbed roof panelCOMMON

    This is SMP country. The topcoat on the volume exposed-fastener panel is silicone modified polyester, priced for a market where the roof is a cost line and the warranty runs 20 to 30 years on film integrity with a shorter, prorated clause on fade and chalk. PVDF exists on exposed-fastener panel and is specified where the building is visible, but the value buyer will not pay the premium on a barn or a mini-storage building. The competitive fight inside SMP is over how much fade and chalk the warranty tolerates, measured in Delta E and Hunter units, and how far south the exposure data comes from.

  • Metal shingle and tile panelCOMMON

    The finish on a stamped shingle is harder to hold than on a roll formed panel, and that is a coating problem, not a metal problem. Roll forming bends coil through a radius; stamping stretches it, and a PVDF film at 0.8 mil total dry film thickness will craze or lose adhesion where the draw is deepest unless the coater has formulated and cured for formability. Many shingle products therefore carry a stone-coated or granular surface over the coated substrate instead, which hides the forming and adds the texture the style depends on.

  • Insulated metal panel skinCOMMON

    Architectural insulated panel is where the coating is judged hardest, because the panel is a large, flat, uninterrupted plane on a building someone designed, and metallic and mica PVDF finishes show every variation in film thickness and orientation. PVDF at AAMA 2605 performance is effectively mandatory on specified work, and the panel maker has to hold color across production runs that may be months apart on one job. The coater's ability to match a color batch to batch, and to certify it, is the difference between a clean job and a punch list of mismatched panels.

  • Formed wall panelCOMMON

    On an architectural wall the coating is the specification, and the architect writes it by name: a 70 percent PVDF fluoropolymer meeting AAMA 2605, in a custom color, on both the panel and every trim and flashing piece around it. PVDF is close to universal here because a wall is seen from thirty feet for the life of the building and chalk or fade is a visible failure. This is also the family where extrusion coating matters, because the window and curtain wall frames in the same wall have to match the panel, and matching a coil coating to an extrusion coating across two suppliers is a real project problem.

  • Trim and brake coilCOMMON

    Trim coil is coated on both sides, and the back side matters more than it looks: it faces the sheathing, it gets wet from the back, and a thin or uncured wash coat is where corrosion starts on a wrapped fascia. The face is typically a polyester or SMP system rather than PVDF, because the product is priced for the remodeling channel, which sets up a real mismatch when trim coil is used around a PVDF roof or wall panel and fades at a different rate. That mismatch usually shows up between years five and ten.

    Post-paint powder on a washer cabinet is the fallback on low-volume colors and on some front-load premium finishes where the coil color would not justify a minimum coil order. It is also what a plant reaches for when a formed radius is tight enough to craze a coil coating, which is the technical limit of the whole prepainted argument

    Epoxy powder coat on the welded grid is the volume finish: it covers the weld nuggets and the cut wire ends, it is food safe, and it chips less readily than a liquid paint under a dropped jar. It is applied after welding, in-house at the wire former or at a merchant coater, which makes the coating line a real part of the wire form business rather than a bought-in service

    The deck and the condenser brackets live in the wettest, dustiest part of the appliance, behind the kick grille where defrost water drains, so a powder coat or a zinc-rich coating is the corrosion answer when galvanized coil is not used. On a machine compartment the coating is about the warranty, not the appearance

    Post-formed powder coat on the wrapper is what a plant does when it cannot buy the color as coil: low-volume premium colors, specialty finishes, and commercial refrigeration in short runs. It is the exact operation prepainted coil exists to eliminate, and the presence of a powder line on a refrigeration cabinet plant usually says the program volume never justified a coil color

The inside of the deck, where clippings pack, is the surface that actually needs it and the hardest one to cover, which is the whole argument for a composite deck
