Floor Covering

    The carpeted floor mat is a tufted or needlepunched polyester mat with a nib or a molded backing, and it is the one soft trim part in the vehicle the customer sees and touches at the dealership while making a purchase decision. That changes the specification: it is bought on appearance and on how it looks after cleaning, not on durability data. It also has to stay put, because a mat that slides under a pedal is a safety recall, which is why the retention system and the anchor interface get more engineering attention than the textile does.

  • Floor carpet faceCOMMON

    The fiber underneath the carpet construction is polyester staple or bulked continuous filament, and this is where the recycled content in a vehicle interior is most concentrated and most visible in a sustainability report. A molded carpet set is several square metres of fiber, which makes it one of the largest single recycled PET applications in the vehicle. The technical caveat worth stating is that recycled bottle flake carries variability in intrinsic viscosity and in contamination that shows up as dye uptake variation, and on a large uninterrupted visible surface a shade band is a reject. That is a real production problem and it is why the recycled content percentage a supplier can actually hold on a Class A surface is lower than the one it can hold on a hidden felt.

Harness Components
  • Harness tapeCOMMON

    PET cloth tape is the workhorse of the protective tape line: the highest abrasion classes, temperature capability well above PVC, and a clean hand tear. It is what wraps an engine bay branch and what runs over any section where the harness contacts a sheet metal edge. Where a designer specifies an abrasion class at all, this is normally what satisfies it.

  • Shield braidCOMMON

    PET film under and over the braid controls the shield geometry and provides the abrasion layer where the shielded cable crosses a bracket. On a shielded construction the tape is part of the electrical design, setting the spacing between braid and insulation, and changing the tape changes the cable's impedance, which is a fact that surprises people who think of tape as protection.

High Voltage Harness

    PET tape and film wraps the shielded bundle and provides the abrasion layer over the braid where the cable passes a bracket or a housing edge. On a shielded high-voltage cable the tape is also part of the electrical construction rather than merely protective, because it separates the braid from the insulation and controls the shield's contact geometry.

    PET film is the laminated insulation on a flat busbar, applied as a wrapped or bonded layer rather than extruded. It delivers dielectric strength at a wall of tenths of a millimetre, which is what makes the busbar thin enough to be worth using in the first place, and it holds up to the forming operation without pinholing at the bend.

Low Voltage Harness

    PET cloth tape is the engine bay wrap. It carries the top abrasion classes in the LV 312 tape test framework, it holds its adhesive above 125 C where a PVC tape's plasticizer migrates and the roll turns to paste, and it tears clean by hand, which is the property an assembler cares about most because every wrap is a manual operation timed in seconds.

    PET cloth tape holds the roof harness to the headliner substrate before the headliner is set into the body, which is an assembly fixturing job rather than a protection job. It has to hold through the handling of a large flexible part and then never be seen again.

Overhead and Trim Cover
  • Headliner face fabricDOMINANT

    Headliner cloth is polyester, nearly always a warp or tricot knit, laminated to a scrim and then to the substrate board. It is the largest uninterrupted visible textile surface in the cabin and it sits directly under the glass, which makes UV stability and heat aging the properties that decide it. A headliner that fades unevenly across a panoramic roof opening is one of the most visible possible interior defects, and there is no way to repair it short of replacing the whole panel. The knit construction matters as much as the fiber: a tricot knit stretches biaxially, which is what lets the laminated assembly be formed over a compound curved substrate without wrinkling at the corners.

    The visor cover has to match the headliner in color, gloss and texture, and it has to do it under harsher conditions: the visor is deployed into direct sun, it is handled by hand every day, and it carries a mirror, a light and a label. A polyester knit or woven from the same dye lot family as the headliner cloth is the standard answer, and the sourcing consequence is that the visor supplier and the headliner supplier have to work from the same fabric even when they are different companies, which is a coordination problem an OEM color and trim group spends real time on.

  • Pillar and trim panel coverDOMINANT

    Pillar trim, quarter trim and rear shelf panels are covered in the same polyester cloth family as the headliner because they meet it along visible seam lines, and a mismatch at that seam is one of the first things a customer sees when they look up. The technical requirement is that the cloth has to be wrapped or laminated over a rigid injection molded substrate with tight radii and no visible adhesive, which puts the demand on the laminating process and on the fabric stretch rather than on any performance property. Airbag deployment adds a constraint: a pillar cover over a curtain airbag has to tear along a designed path, and the fabric and its lamination are part of that tear performance.

Seating Textiles
  • Seat cover fabricDOMINANT

    Woven or knit polyester is the seating surface on the large majority of vehicles built in North America, and the reason is a stack of properties no competing fiber holds together. Abrasion resistance to 60,000 Wyzenbeek double rubs is the number most OEMs write, and polyester reaches it in constructions light enough to sew and drape over a contoured foam pad. Lightfastness matters more than most people outside the industry expect: a seat sits behind glass in a cabin that reaches 80 degrees Celsius in a parking lot, and a dye system that fades unevenly is a warranty claim on a part nobody can replace. Solution dyeing and high performance disperse dye systems both get there, at different costs. Recycled content is now the third axis, because recycled PET from Repreve and equivalent streams is chemically the same fiber, which means the recycled content commitment costs the OEM almost nothing in performance and is therefore the easiest sustainability claim on the whole vehicle.

  • Airbag cushion fabricCOMMON

    Polyester airbag fabric is real and it is used, mostly in curtain airbags and in some side modules where the deployment is less thermally aggressive and where the cushion has to stay inflated longer for rollover protection. Polyester holds pressure better over a several second retention requirement because it is less permeable and less affected by humidity, which is exactly the curtain airbag requirement. It is also cheaper and its supply chain is broader. It loses the frontal driver and passenger modules on thermal resistance and tear strength, and no amount of cost advantage has changed that.

    Polyester facestock is the volume material for durable labels: dimensionally stable through thermal transfer printing, solvent and abrasion resistant, and available in matte white, clear, and metallized for a brushed look. Polyimide facestock takes over where the label goes through reflow.

    PET cloth tape is the workhorse internal cable tape: abrasion resistance against a housing edge, hand tearability for the operator, and a temperature class that covers everything short of an engine bay. Fleece-backed grades are chosen where the noise damping matters more than the abrasion.

Common Attachment and Marking

    The carrier decides the optics and the die-cuttability. Clear polyester gives a badge no visible edge and a domed or printed one a stable dimension through the thermal range; a foam carrier would show. The carrier is also what lets the badge be die-cut to a shape with a tab, which is a converter operation rather than a tape producer one.

Barrier and Protective Apparel

    Reusable surgical gowns are woven or knitted polyester, usually a tightly constructed microfiber with a fluorochemical or silicone repellent finish, and they are laundered and reprocessed seventy five to a hundred times against a tracked cycle count. The argument for them is waste, cost per use and supply security, and all three got stronger after 2020. The argument against them is the reprocessing infrastructure, which most United States hospitals dismantled decades ago and would have to rebuild or outsource. This is the one place in protective apparel where a domestic textile producer has a structurally defensible position, because there is essentially one of them at scale.

  • Face mask filter layerCOMMON

    The ear loops, ties and the reinforcement at the nose are polyester, polyester and spandex blend, or a polyester nonwoven strip, and they are the reason masks get rejected in use rather than in test. An ear loop that is too tight is abandoned by hour three and an ear loop that is too loose breaks the face seal the filtration depends on. None of this is on the ASTM certificate, and all of it decides whether a hospital reorders.

Diagnostic and Filtration Media
  • Blood filter mediaDOMINANT

    A leukoreduction filter is a stack of melt-blown polyester webs with a graded fiber diameter: coarse at the inlet, progressively finer toward the outlet, so the filter loads through its depth rather than blinding at the face. Removing ninety nine point nine percent or more of the white cells from a unit of blood while letting red cells through undamaged is a genuinely hard separation, and it is done by a combination of mechanical capture and surface interaction, which means the fiber surface is usually modified to tune its wettability and charge. The modification is proprietary, it is the product, and it is why this is a high margin corner of nonwovens.

  • Lateral flow membraneCOMMON

    The backing card everything is laminated to is an adhesive coated polyester sheet, and it is doing more than holding the stack together: the overlap geometry where the sample pad meets the membrane and where the membrane meets the wick is what sets flow rate, and the backing card is what holds that geometry to a tolerance. Lamination alignment is a manufacturing control, not a material property, and it is where most of the lot to lot variability in a rapid test actually comes from.

Diagnostics

    Evacuated blood collection tubes moved from glass to PET because a broken tube is a bloodborne pathogen exposure. PET holds the vacuum over a two year shelf life, it is clear for visual inspection of the specimen and the separation gel, and it centrifuges at 3000 g without failing

    The sealing film over a plate is a PET carrier with a pressure-sensitive or heat-seal adhesive, optically clear for real-time PCR readout and rated to hold through thermal cycling without lifting at the corners. A film that peels mid-run is a lost plate and a lost day

    Biaxially oriented PET is the non-compliant angioplasty balloon: it holds 15 to 20 atmospheres at a 12 micron wall and barely grows past its rated diameter, which is exactly what you want when you are cracking a calcified lesion. Nylon and PA12 balloons trade some burst pressure for a softer, more compliant profile and easier refolding

Identification
  • Device and package labelDOMINANT

    Polyester facestock is the volume durable label material: dimensionally stable through thermal transfer printing, solvent and abrasion resistant, and unaffected by the sterilisation dose. Paper facestock survives in secondary packaging only, and gamma-stable topcoats are specified where the print has to stay legible after 25 to 40 kGy.

  • Sterilization indicator tapeCOMMON

    Film-backed indicator and sealing tapes replace crepe paper where the process is low-temperature or where the pack is a rigid container rather than a wrap. The backing choice follows the sterilisation modality, which is the specification question to ask first.

Implantable Textiles
  • Vascular graft textileDOMINANT

    Woven and knitted polyester, universally called Dacron in this industry regardless of who made it, is the large vessel vascular graft and has been for sixty years. Woven grafts have low porosity and almost no bleeding through the wall; knitted grafts are more compliant, handle better and suture more forgivingly but must be sealed with collagen or gelatin to stop transmural blood loss. The property nobody outside the category appreciates is that the fabric is engineered to be infiltrated: a graft that stays inert fails, because the healing response building a neointima on the inner surface is what makes it durable. Yarn denier, filament count, pick and course density and crimp are all specified, and a change to any of them is a new device.

  • Heart valve sewing cuffDOMINANT

    The sewing cuff is the fabric ring a surgeon passes sutures through to attach a valve to the annulus, and it has two jobs that pull against each other. It has to accept and hold a suture for the life of the patient, which argues for a dense, strong woven polyester. And it has to be infiltrated by host tissue so that the healing response seals the perivalvular space, which argues for an open structure. Getting both from one fabric is the design, and it is why the cuff is a knitted or woven polyester velour rather than a plain fabric: the pile gives tissue something to grow into while the ground weave holds the suture.

  • Surgical meshCOMMON

    Polyester mesh is the established alternative and holds real share, particularly in constructions with a collagen or oxidized cellulose barrier film on the visceral side for intraperitoneal placement. It is more hydrophilic than polypropylene, which changes how tissue integrates with it, and the long running clinical argument about whether it hydrolyses meaningfully in vivo over decades has never been fully settled. That unresolved argument is itself a commercial fact: it is why polyester never displaced polypropylene despite handling better.

  • Braided sutureCOMMON

    Braided polyester is the permanent multifilament suture and it is what a surgeon reaches for where the closure has to hold for the life of the patient: tendon repair, cardiac annuloplasty, and anywhere a monofilament would be too stiff to tie down. A braid handles better and holds a knot better than a monofilament of the same strength, and it pays for that with a larger surface area, more tissue drag and a structure that can harbour bacteria in its interstices. Every suture decision in surgery is some version of that trade.

Packaging
  • Sterile barrier trayDOMINANT

    Thermoformed APET and PETG trays are the rigid half of most sterile barrier systems: dimensionally stable through EtO vacuum and gamma, glass-clear so the device can be inspected without opening, and stiff enough to protect a loaded tray through distribution. The tray and the lid are validated together as a system under ISO 11607, which means a resin change is a packaging revalidation, not a purchase order

  • Pouch filmDOMINANT

    A chevron pouch or a form-fill-seal web is a laminate, and PET is the outer print and strength ply: it holds ink, it does not stretch in the sealing jaws, and it survives the sterilization cycle without distorting the graphics that carry the lot and expiry

  • Blister liddingCOMMON

    PET and PET/foil laminate lidding takes the products that are gamma or e-beam sterilized and therefore need no gas permeability, and anything needing a moisture or light barrier. Foil laminates are also where a peelable heat-seal coating is engineered to leave no fibre and no adhesive on the flange

    Reusable patient gowns, scrubs and linen are woven polyester or a polyester and cotton blend, and the purchase is a laundry economics calculation: cost per use across a tracked number of wash cycles, plus the capital and labour of the laundry, against the delivered cost of a disposable. Health systems have moved in both directions on this within the last decade and the answer is genuinely site specific. The durable fact is that a system with its own laundry buys textiles and a system without one buys nonwovens, and no amount of selling changes which one a hospital is.

Wound Care and Absorbent
  • Wound contact layerCOMMON

    The silicone gel needs a carrier, and the carrier is usually a knitted or extruded polyester net with an open structure that lets exudate pass through to the absorbent layer above rather than pooling at the wound bed. Aperture size and open area are the specification: too closed and the dressing macerates the wound, too open and the gel has nothing to hold onto and granulation tissue grows into the net, which turns the next dressing change into the injury the product exists to prevent.

  • Absorbent dressing coreCOMMON

    A separate acquisition and distribution layer, usually a lofty polyester or bicomponent web, sits between the cover and the core on higher specification products. Its job is to take a gush of fluid faster than the core can absorb it, hold it for a moment and spread it laterally so the whole core is used rather than a coin-sized patch of it. Core utilization is the hidden economics of this category: a product that uses forty percent of its absorbent capacity is carrying sixty percent of its cost as dead weight.

  • Adhesive bandage backingCOMMON

    Cast polyester and polyurethane films are the transparent backing on film dressings and on the thinner bandage constructions, where the property being bought is moisture vapour transmission rate: the film must let water vapour out fast enough that the skin under it does not macerate, while keeping liquid water and bacteria from getting in. That single number, measured in grams per square metre per day, is the specification the whole transparent dressing category is sold on, and it is why a general purpose film cannot be substituted for a medical one.

    The bottle flake and the staple fiber spun from it are the upstream half of the same material, and a specifier who asks for a recycled content percentage is asking about this row rather than about the felting. The claim travels with the fiber, not with the board, which is why the felt makers name their fiber supplier in the literature

Lounge and Soft Seating

    Lounge and ancillary seating is where the fabric is most visible and least abused, so the specification loosens on abrasion and tightens on everything a designer can see: hand, drape, colour depth, texture and how a pattern falls across a curved back. Polyester still carries it, but on this part the mill is selling a look rather than a number, and the sample in the designer's hand decides it

    The throw pillow and bolster cover is the lowest-volume and highest-variety sewing in a contract interior, usually cut from the same graded-in polyester line as the seating so it can be ordered as an accessory against the same grade. It is where a cut-and-sew shop rather than a mill actually does the work

Panel and Screen
  • Panel wrap fabricDOMINANT

    Panel wrap is a different fabric problem than upholstery: it has to wrap a corner without a wrinkle, take a laminating adhesive without strike-through, hold a seam under tension for twenty years and not shift on the substrate. Polyester wovens dominate because they are dimensionally stable under the heat a laminating line runs and because the same colour line already exists for the seating

Residential Textiles
  • Residential sofa upholsteryDOMINANT

    Residential and hospitality sofa fabric is bought by the truckload against a retail price point rather than specified into a project, and polyester chenille, microfiber and woven blends carry almost all of it. Nothing about the contract specification applies: the abrasion requirement is lower, the colour line turns with the season, and the buyer is a merchandiser rather than a designer

    Circular-knit polyester ticking is what a shopper actually touches in a store and it is engineered around the fire barrier underneath it rather than around durability. Seating Surfaces
  • Seat upholstery fabricDOMINANT

    Polyester is the graded-in contract upholstery fiber and the whole economics of the category sit on it. Contract grade means 100,000 double rubs on the Wyzenbeek test or 40,000 on the Martindale, and a solution-dyed or package-dyed polyester hits that at a price that survives a grade A or grade B slot on an OEM price list. It takes disperse dye cleanly, it holds colour under the light levels an open plan runs, and it cleans with a water-based agent, which is what the maintenance spec will actually say. The mill sells the pattern and the colour line to a designer; the OEM sells the grade to the buyer; the fiber is the one thing neither of them argues about

  • Seat suspension textileDOMINANT

    A woven polyester suspension deck under the seat pad, or in place of one, sets the seat feel before any foam is specified. Get the weave tension wrong and no foam specification will rescue the chair, which is why the suspension and the pad are engineered together and why a foam supplier walking in alone often cannot explain the complaint

  • Arm upholsteryDOMINANT

    The arm cover is the highest-contact soft surface on a task chair after the seat and the first place a cover shows wear, so it is normally the same graded-in polyester as the seat, cut on the same run so the colour matches across a shipment. Where the arm is height, width and pivot adjustable the cover has to tolerate being handled rather than sat on, which is a different abrasion pattern than the seat sees

  • Task chair back meshCOMMON

    Knit polyester mesh backs on the volume and mid-market chairs, where the frame carries more of the load and the textile is closer to a tensioned fabric than to a spring. Cheaper to make, easier to source, and visibly less recovery after a year, which is exactly what a buyer comparing a value chair to a brand chair is looking at without knowing it

    The PET outer web carries the print, the stiffness that makes the pouch stand, and the puncture resistance a pet food or coffee pack needs. Replacing it with oriented PE is what mono-material conversion actually costs: stiffness, print quality, and machine speed.

  • Lidding filmDOMINANT

    The lidding carrier web is PET because it has to hold print, resist the heat of the sealing jaw without distorting, and carry a peel force that opens cleanly but survives distribution. A PET lid on a PET tray is the mono-material combination the whole rigid food category is converging on.

  • Snack and confection filmCOMMON

    A PET outer web gives dimensional stability, print registration at speed, and puncture resistance on heavier bars and cheese snacks where BOPP alone tears at the notch.

Flexible Lamination
  • Film laminating adhesiveCOMMON

    A PET outer web laminated to a PE sealant web is the workhorse structure of the industry and it is also the structure the recyclability rules are aimed at. PET and PE have different melt points and different densities, so a PET/PE laminate cannot be recycled in either stream: it is neither a PET bottle nor a PE film. Every EPR fee schedule and every How2Recycle designation treats it accordingly, and that is the whole reason the mono-material program exists.

  • Heat seal and peel coatingCOMMON

    The lidding carrier web is PET because it has to hold flat under a heated sealing die without distorting, carry print and often a foil or metallized ply, and survive being die cut and stacked. Paper lidding is growing for the same EPR reasons as everything else on this lens, and it needs a different coating because paper cannot take the sealing temperature PET can.

Labeling and Decoration
  • Shrink sleeve seamDOMINANT

    Glycol-modified PET and crystallizable PET are the volume sleeve films because they give 70 to 78 percent shrink, which is what a complex contoured container needs, and they print well. The recyclability problem is specific and severe: a PETG sleeve on a PET bottle has a different density and melt behavior than the bottle and contaminates the flake stream, so the sleeve has to be removed before the bottle is ground, which nothing in a NA MRF actually does.

  • Pressure sensitive label stockCOMMON

    PET facestock takes the applications needing dimensional stability under heat, chemical resistance, or a metallized or high-clarity finish: durable goods labels, drum and chemical labels, and premium decoration. PET is also the majority liner material on film constructions, because a PET liner can be run thinner than glassine at the same tensile, which raises roll length and cuts changeovers on a high speed labeler.

Rigid Beverage

    PET owns the beverage bottle on three properties no other resin combines: glass-like clarity, a carbon dioxide barrier good enough to hold carbonation for shelf life, and stretch blow molding economics that turn a two gram preform difference into millions of dollars a year. The decisive one now is circularity. PET is the only resin in this industry with a functioning bottle-to-bottle recycling stream, food-grade letters of no objection behind it, and a bale with real market value, which is why every recycled content mandate names PET first.

    PETG and crystallizable PET shrink sleeves give the 360 degree decoration and the high shrink percentage that contoured bottles need. The tradeoff is that a PET sleeve does not float, so it has to carry a perforated tear strip or a wash-off adhesive or it contaminates the very flake stream the bottle feeds.

    The berry clamshell is the highest recycled-content rigid package in the store, routinely 50 to 100 percent post-consumer, because the application forgives the slight haze and yellowing that recycled PET brings and the buyer is a grower cooperative that competes on cost. Clarity, vent moldability, and stacking strength do the rest.

  • Thermoformed food trayCOMMON

    Formed PET tray is where the industry has landed for bakery, produce, ready meals, and increasingly protein. It runs on the same sheet extrusion and thermoforming line as the clamshell, it takes 50 to 100 percent post-consumer content, and it seals to a PET lidding film to make a mono-material package that an EPR fee schedule will reward.

    Clear formed rPET cartons let the consumer see the eggs without opening the lid, which sells, and they carry high post-consumer content. They cost more than pulp and they are the premium and organic presentation.

  • Deli and takeout containerCOMMON

    Formed PET hinged containers and cold deli tubs win where clarity sells the product and no heat is involved: salads, cut fruit, bakery, and grab-and-go. Recycled content availability is pulling volume here from polypropylene.

  • Dairy tub and cupEMERGING

    Thermoformed PET cups are being qualified on cold-fill dairy and dessert specifically because PET carries recycled content and polypropylene largely cannot yet. The material is worse for the application and better for the fee schedule, which is the whole story of this industry right now.

    PET takes the personal care and nutrition bottles where the consumer expects to see the product and the fill is cold, and it is the resin a marketer reaches for when the sustainability claim has to say recycled content.

    Void-release PET is the standard construction for security seals and pharmaceutical carton seals: a metallized or coated PET facestock with a release pattern printed under the adhesive so the pattern transfers on removal. PET is used because it will not stretch or tear during the removal attempt, which is what defeats the evidence.

Tape and Strapping

    Polyester backed tape takes the heavy duty and high tensile applications where BOPP would stretch or split: overpacked cases, heavy appliance cartons, and anything that gets strapped rather than just sealed. It costs several times as much and is specified by failure rather than by preference.

    Polyester backing carries the filaments and takes the abrasion, and polyester filament versions of the tape exist where glass is unacceptable because of breakage, skin irritation, or a food contact zone. Polyester filament gives up roughly a third of the tensile for those benefits.

Cell and Module Bonding
  • Cell wrap and can tapeDOMINANT

    PET film tape is wrapped around the cell can to do two jobs at once: keep the can electrically isolated from its neighbours and from the module structure, and survive contact with electrolyte if a cell ever weeps. PET holds both, it is thin enough not to consume stack height, and it is cheap enough to be used on every cell in a plant running millions of them. The specification that matters is dielectric strength after thermal aging, not initial dielectric strength, because the tape sits at module temperature for twenty years and a film that embrittles is a short circuit waiting for a vibration event.

  • Busbar insulation tapeCOMMON

    Busbar insulation is a thin-section dielectric problem at up to 1,500 VDC, and PET film tape is the workhorse. The requirement is dielectric strength per unit thickness, because every thousandth of an inch on a busbar wrap is stack height in a pack that is already volume constrained, and creepage and clearance distances are set by the geometry the tape has to fit inside. A supplier quoting on adhesion here has misread the specification: the adhesive only has to hold the film in place, and the film is the part being bought.

Service and Identification
  • Asset and rating labelCOMMON

    Polyester facestock with a durable overlaminate is the standard construction for an outdoor asset label, because PET holds dimensional stability and print adhesion under UV and temperature cycling in a way polypropylene and paper do not. The specification that gets missed is the print system: a thermal transfer ribbon that is not matched to the facestock will look correct on day one and be unreadable after two summers, and the label supplier who supplies the ribbon with the stock avoids the argument entirely.

  • Warning and arc flash labelCOMMON

    Polyester facestock again, for the same UV and dimensional reasons, with the added requirement that the printed colour has to stay within the specification the standard sets for a hazard marking. A red that has faded to orange is not a compliant warning label, and on a twenty year asset in the desert Southwest that is a real and documented failure. This is a small-volume, high-specification, defensible corner of the label business and it is almost never bid competitively.

Solar
  • Module backsheetDOMINANT

    The core of a conventional backsheet is PET film, and the fluoropolymer layers on either side are what make it survive. Twenty five years of UV, damp heat and voltage is the spec, and backsheet failure is the most expensive quality lesson the industry has learned: a generation of PA-based backsheets cracked in the field and cost module makers hundreds of millions in warranty claims.

Solar Module and Array
  • Backsheet lamination adhesiveCOMMON

    PET is the core layer of a conventional backsheet, sandwiched between a fluoropolymer outer film and an inner tie layer, and it is the layer that provides dielectric strength and mechanical body. It is also the layer that hydrolyses: PET plus moisture plus heat plus twenty years is a chain scission reaction, and the fluoropolymer outer layer exists largely to keep water away from it. Hydrolysis-resistant PET grades are a real and specified product.
