Where POM (Acetal) Is Used in North American Manufacturing
Low-friction, high-stiffness thermoplastic for gears, latches, and wear surfaces. Used in 21 part families across 8 industries.
Automotive
2 PART FAMILIES
Harness Components
Connector housingCOMMON
Acetal shows up on the small moving pieces inside a connector system: terminal position assurance sliders, connector position assurance clips, and lever mechanisms. It has the lubricity to slide without a high insertion force and the fatigue resistance to be actuated repeatedly at end of line and again at service, and it is the wrong choice anywhere a flame rating applies.
Interior
Cupholder and trim bezelsCOMMON
Acetal for spring fingers, retractable cupholder mechanisms, and latches where low friction and fatigue life over thousands of cycles matter
Electronics
3 PART FAMILIES
Industrial and DIN Rail
Cable management clipCOMMON
Acetal appears on clips that have to release and reclose repeatedly without fatiguing, and on the small mechanisms in cable management arms. It is the wrong choice anywhere a flame rating applies.
Internal Molded Structure
Switch actuator and buttonDOMINANT
Acetal is the actuator resin because it is the only one in the taxonomy that combines low friction against a molded guide, fatigue resistance over millions of press cycles, and dimensional stability tight enough that the plunger does not bind after a humid week. It also recovers its shape rather than taking a set. The tradeoffs are real: POM will not bond or paint, it has poor flame performance without a specialty grade, and it shrinks a lot, which makes the tool harder.
Card guide and railCOMMON
Acetal guides insert more smoothly than nylon and hold tighter tolerance, which matters where the card has to align a blind connector. The problem is flame rating: standard POM burns readily and a V-0 acetal grade is a specialty product, so the trade is friction against flammability.
Appliances
4 PART FAMILIES
Cooking
Range knob and handle trimDOMINANT
The knob is gripped by a wet hand next to a burner and turned tens of thousands of times against a valve stem. Acetal gives the tactile click, the low friction on the stem, the dimensional stability at 90 C radiant heat, and the fatigue life, which is why the load-bearing knob body is POM even when the visible skirt is not
Dishwashing
Spray arm and manifoldCOMMON
Acetal hubs, bearings, and the diverter valve, where a wet plain bearing has to turn with low friction and hold its bore against hot water swell
Laundry
Detergent dispenserCOMMON
Acetal for the metering valve rotor, the siphon, and the drawer detent, where the part cycles wet against a seal and needs low friction without swelling
Refrigeration
Icemaker housing and augerCOMMON
Acetal augers, gears, and the crusher drive: the only volume resin with the low friction, the stiffness, and the fatigue life to turn a frozen ice column thousands of times without a lubricant that would contaminate the ice
Medical Devices
3 PART FAMILIES
Devices
Inhaler housingCOMMON
Acetal is the mechanism: springs, ratchets, cams, and the metering valve stem, wherever low friction and a million cycles without lubricant decide whether the dose counter is accurate at dose 199. POM is also the resin most exposed to gamma sterilization damage, so these devices are usually EtO sterilized or assembled clean rather than terminally sterilized
Insulin pen bodyCOMMON
The lead screw, the dose dial drum, and the clutch are acetal. Dose accuracy across the life of the pen is a friction and wear problem, and POM running against POM or against a PBT counterface is the standard solution because it holds tolerance without lubricant that could migrate
Implantable
Orthopedic bearingLEGACY
Acetal acetabular components were tried in early hip designs and abandoned on wear and creep. The entry exists because the failure is the reason the industry standardized on one polymer family and stayed there, and because a supplier proposing an alternative bearing polymer will be asked about it
HVAC & Water Heating
1 PART FAMILY
Plumbing & Hydronic
Shutoff and mixing valve bodyCOMMON
Acetal stems, balls, and seats inside both brass and plastic valves, where low friction wet and dimensional stability in chlorinated water matter more than strength, and where a seat that swells is a valve that will not close
Packaging
1 PART FAMILY
Rigid Household
Pump and trigger dispenserCOMMON
Acetal is the ball, seat, and low-friction wear surface inside a pump where dimensional stability and a low, repeatable coefficient of friction decide whether the pump primes. It is also the part hardest to design out of the all-polyolefin pump.
Lawn, Garden & Outdoor Power
6 PART FAMILIES
Garden & Storage
Spreader hopperCOMMON
Acetal gate plates, rate-adjust mechanisms, and linkage bushings; the gate has to slide reliably after sitting in a garage full of fertilizer dust for a winter
Mower
Handle, grip, and controlCOMMON
Acetal on the cable anchors, detent mechanisms, and pivot bushings inside a throttle or drive control, where unlubricated low friction and fatigue life over thousands of cycles are the whole requirement
Power Unit
Riding fuel tankCOMMON
Acetal caps, vent and rollover valves, and sender housings; the rollover valve is a regulatory part on equipment that operates on slopes
Cordless motor housingCOMMON
Acetal gears in the reduction train, planet carriers, and thrust washers; the same low-friction unlubricated fatigue life a mower wheel gear needs, at higher speed
Powered Handheld
Handheld fuel tankCOMMON
Acetal fuel caps, vent valves, and pickup fittings, which have to seal against gasoline and swell predictably; the cap is also the part a customer over-torques every time
Trimmer head and spoolCOMMON
Acetal spools, indexing pawls, and the bump mechanism inside the head, where a low-friction unlubricated surface has to release line under centrifugal load without binding on grit
Energy & Storage
1 PART FAMILY
Solar
Racking bushingCOMMON
Acetal is the alternative where the bushing is a precision sliding part and moisture-driven dimensional change in nylon would bind it.
