Automotive
10 PART FAMILIES
Exterior
GrilleDOMINANT
Platable ABS remains the volume grille resin because decorative chrome plates reliably on it and it holds the fine detail of mesh and slat patterns
SpoilerDOMINANT
Blow-molded and injection-molded ABS spoilers paint body color and hold shape at low cost; the volume answer on sedans and hatches
Mirror housingLEGACY
Painted ABS caps on older programs, replaced by ASA (unpainted) and PC/ABS (painted) on weathering and heat
Interior
Cupholder and trim bezelsDOMINANT
ABS is the default for bezels and cupholder inserts: paints and plates well, holds fine grain, and is cheap enough for small parts
Center consoleCOMMON
Platable ABS for chrome-look trim rings and accents; the only volume resin that electroplates reliably
Floor console binCOMMON
ABS bins where the surface is visible and needs a finer grain or paint
Instrument panel substrateLEGACY
Unreinforced ABS retainers on older low-cost programs, displaced by talc PP and LFT-PP as heat requirements rose
Door panel substrateLEGACY
Injection-molded ABS door panels on older programs, replaced by talc PP on cost and by natural fiber on weight
Pillar trimLEGACY
ABS pillar covers on older programs, displaced by PP on cost and by FMVSS 201 rib design
Plastic Parts
Bright and plated trimCOMMON
The substrate is not incidental. Plating on plastic works because the butadiene phase in ABS can be chemically etched away to leave a keyed surface the metal locks into, so the resin grade is a plating decision. Substitute a non-platable grade and the whole process fails at the etch tank, which is why a platable ABS carries a premium and why a molder cannot resource the resin without telling the plater.
Building Products
2 PART FAMILIES
Pipe & Plumbing
DWV pipeCOMMON
ABS DWV persists where regional codes and contractor habit favor it, mainly the West, Pacific Northwest, and Canada; cements faster in cold weather
Bath and shower surroundCOMMON
ABS-capped acrylic sheet (ABS backing under a thin acrylic cap) cuts material cost against solid acrylic for builder-grade units
Electronics
4 PART FAMILIES
Enclosure
Molded enclosureCOMMON
Straight ABS is the cost floor for indoor, low-heat consumer housings where V-0 is not required or HB is enough.
Molded Enclosure
Consumer housingCOMMON
Straight ABS is the cost floor for indoor housings where UL 94 HB is enough: set-top boxes, chargers with their own internal barrier, accessories, and anything inside another enclosure. It has the best surface and the easiest processing of any styrenic and roughly two-thirds the resin cost of PC/ABS. It fails the moment the housing itself becomes the fire enclosure.
Bezel and front frameCOMMON
ABS wins the cost-driven bezel where the part is small, indoor, and painted anyway: drive bays, panel escutcheons, and trim rings. Its dimensional stability is worse than PC/ABS over temperature, which shows up as a visible gap change at the housing joint on a large frame.
Molded Optics
Display window and lensCOMMON
The opaque border and the window carrier around a display are frequently ABS or a styrenic, molded as a separate part or as the second shot of a two-shot window, because only the optical area needs an optical resin and styrenic is cheaper and easier to color.
Heavy Truck & Off-Highway
6 PART FAMILIES
Cab Exterior
Side fairing and chassis skirtDOMINANT
Thermoformed ABS sheet is the default for cab extenders and chassis skirts: large, thin, low volume, and easily cut for tank and step variants
Grille and grille surroundDOMINANT
Platable ABS carries the bright chrome grille on Class 8, molded in sections and plated
Roof fairingCOMMON
Thermoformed ABS sheet with a weatherable cap is the lower-tooling-cost route for fairings on smaller programs and for aftermarket fairings
Cab Interior
Door panelLEGACY
ABS door panels on older programs, replaced by PP on cost
HVAC housing and ductingLEGACY
ABS ducts and registers on older designs and where a painted finish is needed
Off-Highway
ROPS cab exterior panelCOMMON
Thermoformed ABS interior cab liners and headliners on operator cabs
RV & Powersports
5 PART FAMILIES
Powersports Body
Hood and cowlCOMMON
Painted ABS and PC/ABS fairings and cowls on motorcycles where a paint-grade surface is required
Side panelCOMMON
Painted ABS side covers and saddlebags on motorcycles and premium models
FenderCOMMON
Thermoformed ABS fender skirts on travel trailers; cheapest large cosmetic part
RV Interior
Shower surroundCOMMON
Thermoformed ABS surrounds and pans on entry-level and lightweight units; lighter, no styrene, faster cycle
RV Structure
Rear capCOMMON
Thermoformed ABS rear caps on entry-level towables avoid open-mold labor and styrene emissions
Appliances
9 PART FAMILIES
Cooking
Range knob and handle trimCOMMON
Platable and paintable ABS for the visible knob skirt and bezel ring, two-shot onto a POM core or assembled to it; the only volume resin that chrome-plates reliably for a bright knob
Microwave cavity linerCOMMON
ABS for the outer cabinet, door frame, vent grille, and control surround around the steel cavity, which is where the polymer content of a microwave actually sits
Vent hood housingCOMMON
Molded ABS hood bodies, blower housings, and baffle frames on under-cabinet and microwave-hood combination units, and on the concealed structure behind a stainless skin
Laundry
Control panel bezelDOMINANT
The console bezel is the face of the machine. ABS is the volume answer because it molds a Class A surface with a fine grain or a high gloss, paints and plates without a primer, and holds a white, black, or stainless-look color match across an entire product line
Washer lid and door frameCOMMON
ABS for the visible lid skin and the hinge surround where a painted or high-gloss finish and a tighter grain match to the console are wanted
Refrigeration
Refrigerator cabinet linerDOMINANT
The single largest ABS application in appliances. A refrigerator cabinet liner is thermoformed from extruded ABS sheet in one piece, then foamed in place against the steel wrapper, so the sheet has to hold dimensional stability while rigid polyurethane expands behind it, take a food-contact grade, and resist food acids and cleaning chemicals at 2 to 5 C for twenty years
Refrigerator door linerDOMINANT
The door inner panel is a deeper, more detailed thermoform than the cabinet liner: shelf pockets, dairy compartment, gasket retention groove, and dispenser cutout all come out of one sheet, and ABS is the only volume sheet that draws that far without thinning at the corners
Crisper and deli binDOMINANT
Crisper, deli, and freezer bins are the styrenic family working as a group: translucent SAN for the volume clear bin, HIPS for opaque bins, and ABS where the bin carries load through a rail and needs impact at 2 C without whitening at the stress corners
Shelf frame and railDOMINANT
Shelf surrounds, door bin frames, and cantilever brackets are injection-molded ABS: it molds the thin ribs and snap features, holds a white or grey color match to the liner, and takes the point loads a glass shelf puts into its frame
Medical Devices
3 PART FAMILIES
Devices
Insulin pen bodyCOMMON
Reusable pen bodies and the outer sleeves of premium disposables use ABS for a painted, printed, or metallized finish that PP will not hold. The reusable pen is a durable good and is styled like one
Pump and monitor housingCOMMON
ABS still carries the low-cost durable equipment: pole clamps, carts, drip stands, and non-critical covers. It is cheap, it paints, and it is easy to mold, and it fails fastest of any of these against alcohol and bleach
Disposables
Luer connectorLEGACY
ABS hubs and stopcock bodies are still in the field on older cleared devices. They are retreating because ABS is opaque, less resistant to lipid and alcohol stress cracking than the copolyesters, and yellows under gamma, but a cleared device does not change resin without a reason
HVAC & Water Heating
7 PART FAMILIES
Air Handling
Blower housingCOMMON
ABS scrolls and cutoffs on smaller air handlers and on fan coil units, where the stiffness of the styrenic lets a thinner wall hold the same shape and the part is never near a heat exchanger
Condensate drain panCOMMON
ABS primary and auxiliary pans where stiffness at thin wall matters more than chemical resistance, and on secondary pans that sit under an attic unit and only see water when something has already gone wrong
Condensate trap and pumpCOMMON
Molded ABS trap bodies and float switch housings, particularly on the factory-installed traps that ship attached to a condensing furnace, where the part is molded rather than assembled from pipe fittings
Air filter frame and mediaCOMMON
ABS filter racks, access door frames, and the track hardware on media cabinets, where the part is visible at the return grille and has to look finished
Heat Exchange
Flue and vent pipeLEGACY
ABS vent pipe on some older and imported condensing appliances. It has the worst temperature margin of the three plastics and is being written out of installation instructions rather than designed in
Outdoor Unit
Condenser fan shroudCOMMON
ABS shrouds and top grilles on value-tier units and under a painted finish, where the unit is expected to be replaced at twelve years rather than twenty and the resin cost difference reaches the bill of materials
Control box and housingCOMMON
ABS for non-structural covers, wire channels, and service panels inside the control compartment, where the part is out of the live-parts enclosure and the rating requirement drops
Lawn, Garden & Outdoor Power
5 PART FAMILIES
Mower
Upper housing and hoodCOMMON
Thermoformed ABS and coextruded capped sheet for lawn tractor hoods, dash panels, and fenders on lower-volume platforms where an injection tool for a part that size cannot be justified. Tooling is a fraction of the cost and the platform can be restyled annually
Grass chute and deflectorCOMMON
Molded ABS chutes and deflectors where the part is a visible styling surface and has to color-match a thermoformed hood rather than a molded housing
Bagger housing and hopperCOMMON
Thermoformed ABS bagger shrouds and chute covers on tractor platforms that already run thermoformed hoods, so the same sheet and the same former serve both
Powered Handheld
Blower housing and tubeCOMMON
Molded ABS housings and tubes where the part is a Class A styling surface or has to color-match a thermoformed component, at a small stiffness and heat penalty against filled PP
Guard and debris shieldCOMMON
Molded ABS guards and hand shields where the part is a visible styling surface on a retail tool and has to match the housing color exactly
Who supplies it
Companies mapped at Tier 2 or Tier 3 selling resins into the 9 industries where ABS is used, largest first. At most 12 are listed. Tier and industry placement for each company is in the report for that market.
