The substrate is not incidental. Plating on plastic works because the butadiene phase in ABS can be chemically etched away to leave a keyed surface the metal locks into, so the resin grade is a plating decision. Substitute a non-platable grade and the whole process fails at the etch tank, which is why a platable ABS carries a premium and why a molder cannot resource the resin without telling the plater.

ABS DWV persists where regional codes and contractor habit favor it, mainly the West, Pacific Northwest, and Canada; cements faster in cold weather

The opaque border and the window carrier around a display are frequently ABS or a styrenic, molded as a separate part or as the second shot of a two-shot window, because only the optical area needs an optical resin and styrenic is cheaper and easier to color.

The console bezel is the face of the machine. ABS is the volume answer because it molds a Class A surface with a fine grain or a high gloss, paints and plates without a primer, and holds a white, black, or stainless-look color match across an entire product line

The single largest ABS application in appliances. A refrigerator cabinet liner is thermoformed from extruded ABS sheet in one piece, then foamed in place against the steel wrapper, so the sheet has to hold dimensional stability while rigid polyurethane expands behind it, take a food-contact grade, and resist food acids and cleaning chemicals at 2 to 5 C for twenty years

The door inner panel is a deeper, more detailed thermoform than the cabinet liner: shelf pockets, dairy compartment, gasket retention groove, and dispenser cutout all come out of one sheet, and ABS is the only volume sheet that draws that far without thinning at the corners

Crisper, deli, and freezer bins are the styrenic family working as a group: translucent SAN for the volume clear bin, HIPS for opaque bins, and ABS where the bin carries load through a rail and needs impact at 2 C without whitening at the stress corners

Shelf surrounds, door bin frames, and cantilever brackets are injection-molded ABS: it molds the thin ribs and snap features, holds a white or grey color match to the liner, and takes the point loads a glass shelf puts into its frame

Reusable pen bodies and the outer sleeves of premium disposables use ABS for a painted, printed, or metallized finish that PP will not hold. The reusable pen is a durable good and is styled like one

ABS still carries the low-cost durable equipment: pole clamps, carts, drip stands, and non-critical covers. It is cheap, it paints, and it is easy to mold, and it fails fastest of any of these against alcohol and bleach

ABS hubs and stopcock bodies are still in the field on older cleared devices. They are retreating because ABS is opaque, less resistant to lipid and alcohol stress cracking than the copolyesters, and yellows under gamma, but a cleared device does not change resin without a reason

ABS scrolls and cutoffs on smaller air handlers and on fan coil units, where the stiffness of the styrenic lets a thinner wall hold the same shape and the part is never near a heat exchanger
