Grid and Support

    Aluminum grid is used in pool enclosures, natatoriums, and exterior soffit applications for corrosion reasons, and extruded aluminum carriers appear in linear metal, baffle, and specialty ceiling systems where the profile is too complex to roll form. That specialty ceiling business is a different market from lay-in acoustic grid: it is specified by architects, fabricated in shorter runs, finished with powder coat or anodize, and priced several times higher. It is also the growth end of the ceiling category, which matters for anyone whose position is only in commodity grid.

Metal Openings

    Aluminum is the structural frame material for commercial windows, storefront, and curtain wall because 6063 extrudes into the complex multi-chamber shapes those systems need at a strength no polymer approaches, and because a large glazed opening has to carry wind load on a slender sightline. It is also an excellent conductor of heat, roughly a thousand times better than the vinyl it competes with in residential, which means an unbroken aluminum frame is a thermal bridge that no glazing package can compensate for. That contradiction is the entire reason this part family exists.

    Aluminum appears as extruded stile and rail on full-view glass garage doors, which have moved from commercial showrooms into high-end residential and now represent the premium end of the category. The frame is an extrusion, the infill is glass or polycarbonate, and the finish is anodize or powder coat rather than coil coating, so the whole supply chain for that product is the architectural aluminum chain and not the coated coil chain. It is a small share of units and a large share of revenue, and it is served by different suppliers than the rest of the family.

Metal Roofing

    Snow retention exists because metal roofs shed snow as a sheet, and a sheet of snow releasing off a standing seam roof above an entrance is a liability event. The device is an extruded or machined aluminum clamp that grips the seam without penetrating it, plus a bar or fence spanning between clamps. 6xxx extrusion is dominant because the part needs a closed profile with a machined setscrew boss, which is an extrusion and machining job rather than a forming job. This is one of the few families in this lens made by extrusion and CNC rather than by roll forming, and the supply base is correspondingly different.

Cab Structure
  • Step and grab handle treadDOMINANT

    Steps are the part of a truck a driver touches most and the part most likely to generate an injury claim. Slip resistance is regulated: FMCSA rules require safe access and egress, and OSHA walking-working surface requirements reach truck-mounted steps and catwalks on vocational equipment. That makes tread pattern, drainage, and finish engineering requirements rather than styling, and it is why extruded aluminum tread sections dominate. An extrusion delivers the tread pattern and the mounting geometry in one operation, it does not corrode, and the pattern does not wear smooth the way a painted steel step does.

Tractor Chassis

    Aluminum crossmembers are far more common than aluminum rails and the reason is the load case. A crossmember carries torsion and local mounting load rather than full reversed bending, so the fatigue argument that kills an aluminum rail does not bind the same way. Extruded 6xxx sections bolted between steel rails save real weight at moderate cost, and the galvanic couple between aluminum and steel is managed with an isolator or a coated fastener rather than avoided. This is the most common place on a tractor chassis where the lightweighting decision actually goes aluminum.

    Aluminum frame rails exist and they stay rare, which is worth understanding because it is the clearest counterexample to the lightweighting story that runs through the rest of this lens. The weight saving is real, a few hundred pounds on a tractor. The problem is that aluminum has no fatigue limit: steel loaded below a threshold runs forever, aluminum accumulates damage at every stress cycle no matter how small. A tractor frame sees ten million cycles in a working life, and designing an aluminum rail for that means adding back most of the section you saved. It appears on weight-sensitive vocational and specialty chassis and it has not moved into line-haul.

  • Fifth wheel top plateEMERGING

    Aluminum fifth wheels are a genuine and growing product on weight-sensitive line-haul tractors, saving on the order of a hundred pounds on a component that sits high and far forward. They cost several times a steel unit and they are bought by fleets that have run the payload number and found that a hundred pounds is worth it across a twenty-year asset. The engineering case is harder than the weight case: the same fatigue argument that keeps aluminum out of frame rails applies to a part with a defined safety consequence, so the test file is larger and the design is more conservative.

Trailer Structure
  • Platform trailer crossmemberDOMINANT

    Every pound of trailer is a pound of freight the fleet cannot carry. Federal law caps a tractor trailer at 80,000 pounds gross, the bridge formula distributes that across axles, and a fleet hauling anything that weighs out rather than cubes out converts trailer weight into lost revenue on every load for twenty years. A platform trailer that is 500 pounds lighter carries 500 more pounds of paying freight, every trip, and fleets calculate that to the dollar. That single arithmetic is why extruded 6xxx crossmembers won the platform trailer and why the same argument fails on the tractor, where the weight sits under a different constraint and the fatigue case is harsher.

  • Van floor crossmemberDOMINANT

    A van trailer floor crossmember is not sized for the freight, it is sized for a fully loaded forklift wheel driving across it during loading, which is a concentrated load far higher than anything the trailer carries down the road. That governs the section and it governs the spacing, typically twelve to twenty-four inches. Extruded aluminum I-beam sections took this family for the payload reason, and because an extrusion delivers exactly the section the engineer designed with no forming operation at all. On a fifty-three foot van there are dozens of them, so a pound each is real money.

  • Trailer side postDOMINANT

    This is the family where the payload argument is at its purest. A sheet-and-post van sidewall carries a post every sixteen to twenty-four inches down fifty-three feet, so there are forty or more of them and every pound each is forty pounds of lost freight. Extruded 6xxx posts deliver the exact section the engineer wants with no forming step, they do not rust in the brine that gets thrown up inside a trailer, and they let the wall be thinner, which buys interior width, which buys pallet positions. Weight and width are both revenue. That is the whole argument and it is why the van trailer went aluminum while the tractor pulling it did not.

  • Trailer roof bowDOMINANT

    Roof bows carry very little load in normal service, which makes them close to pure weight, and pure weight is exactly what the payload calculation attacks first. Extruded aluminum bows are near universal on van trailers for that reason. The load case that actually matters is a dock impact: a trailer pulled under a canopy or a low door hits the roof structure, and the design intent is usually that the bow deforms in a way that is repairable rather than tearing the roof sheet off.

  • Trailer rear frame and guardEMERGING

    Aluminum appears in the non-guard parts of the rear frame, the door frame and the upper corner structure, where the payload argument applies and the federal standard does not. The guard itself stays steel. This split, aluminum everywhere the regulation is silent and steel everywhere it speaks, is a pattern worth recognizing because it repeats across the whole trailer.

  • Landing gear legEMERGING

    Aluminum landing gear exists and it is a hard sell, because the part combines a high static load, a sliding mechanism, and an abuse case that is specifically about being hit sideways. The weight saving is under a hundred pounds and the failure consequence is a dropped trailer. It goes on weight-optimized fleets that have already taken the easy pounds out elsewhere.

    Extruded aluminum trim and filler profiles appear on built-in and panel-ready installations where the trim has to be cut to length on site to fit a cabinet opening. An extrusion gives a constant section with an integral retention feature that a roll-formed steel profile would need a separate clip for, and it can be anodized rather than painted
