Glass is an excellent absorber and it takes heat that no polyester can. It also sheds respirable fiber, requires a containment facing, irritates the hands of everyone who handles it, and is a landfill item at end of life. When a material with equal acoustic performance in the relevant band arrived that had none of those problems, the switch took about a decade.

The cost is a matte surface, visible weld lines at the terminal cavity walls, and faster tool wear on a high-cavitation mold.
