    Nylon carpet was the premium automotive floor covering for decades, and it earned it: better resilience, better crush recovery and a hand that still reads as more expensive than polyester. It lost on cost, on the recycled content story and on the fact that solution dyed polyester closed most of the performance gap. It survives on some luxury programs and in the aftermarket. A supplier positioning nylon carpet today is selling against the direction of travel and needs a specific reason, usually a program where crush recovery in a high traffic area is the stated complaint.

Harness Components
  • Connector housingDOMINANT

    Glass-filled PA66 is the automotive connector housing resin and has been for thirty years. It has to do four things at once: hold terminal positions to a few hundredths of a millimetre through a 125 C bay, take the insertion force and the lever cam load without creeping, hold a seal groove that stays sealed after ten years of thermal cycling, and survive vibration without the lock backing out. No other resin in the taxonomy does all four at a price the volume supports. The moisture uptake is the known cost and is designed around, not eliminated.

    PA66 is the cable tie material and effectively the only one. The tie has to take a tensile load at the pawl without the tooth stripping, it has to be installed by a tensioning tool that cuts it flush at a set tension, and it has to still be holding in ten years. Heat-stabilized grades go under the hood and UV-stabilized black grades go anywhere sunlight reaches. The moisture uptake that is a liability on a connector is a benefit here: a conditioned tie is tougher and less likely to snap at installation than a dry-as-molded one, which is why a tie that has been sitting in a dry warehouse in Arizona breaks more often than one from a humid plant.

    The junction block is glass-filled PA66 because it is a connector housing with more terminals and higher current. It holds many terminal positions against insertion force, carries integral busbar and splice features, and has to remain dimensionally stable while a technician pushes a heavy mating connector into it during service. The block exists at all because consolidating splices into a serviceable molded assembly beats a taped bundle of ultrasonic welds that cannot be diagnosed or repaired.

    The engine bay power distribution box is glass-filled PA66 for the same reasons as a connector, with the stakes raised: it carries the vehicle's entire electrical load through one molded part, it sits in the hottest accessible location, and a fuse operating in it is by definition a controlled thermal event inside the housing. PA66 is the resin that holds terminal geometry through that event.

    PA66 conduit is the engine bay grade. It holds continuously above 125 C, resists oil and coolant splash, and carries the flame ratings the bay demands, at several times the cost of PP. The decision between them is a temperature map exercise done on the routing drawing, and the two are frequently used on the same harness a metre apart.

High Voltage Harness

    Glass-filled PA66 is the charge inlet housing because the inlet is a structural, thermal, and dielectric part at once. It takes the insertion and withdrawal force of a heavy connector thousands of times, it holds the contact positions through the thermal excursion of a fast charge session, and it has to keep doing both after ten years of UV and road salt at the body opening. PA66 holds dimension where PBT would be cheaper but softer at the pin retention feature.

Low Voltage Harness

    Heat-stabilized PA66 is what the clips, ties, conduit, and connector bodies in this harness are molded from, because the bay is where every other polymer runs out of temperature. It holds mechanical properties above 125 C continuously, resists oil and coolant splash, and takes a thread-forming or push-in stud feature that survives installation force. Its weakness is moisture: PA66 conditions to ambient humidity and grows, which is why a dry-as-molded dimension is never the dimension the assembly line sees.

    Glass-filled PA66 is what the IP junction block, the connector bodies, and the bracketry are molded from. The IP is a subassembly built on a magnesium or steel beam off-line and then installed as a unit, so its harness furniture takes handling and installation loads that an in-body harness never sees, and the stiffness a filled nylon brings is what keeps a loaded connector block from flexing off its mount during that handling.

Seating Textiles
  • Airbag cushion fabricDOMINANT

    High tenacity woven nylon 66 is the airbag fabric of record and the reason is a combination polyester cannot match. The cushion is inflated in about 30 milliseconds by gas that leaves the inflator at several hundred degrees Celsius, and the fabric has to take that thermal shock while the fabric is being violently deployed against its own folds. Nylon 66 has higher melting point headroom, better energy absorption and markedly better tear propagation resistance than polyester at the same weight, and tear resistance is the property that decides whether a small defect becomes a rupture. It also packs smaller for a given strength, which matters in a module that has to fit inside a steering wheel hub. The trade is moisture: nylon absorbs it and its properties change with it, which is why the fabric is conditioned and the module is sealed.

    The thermal break is a glass-reinforced polyamide 66 strut, rolled into machined grooves in the interior and exterior aluminum profiles and mechanically crimped so the two halves of the frame are structurally joined and thermally separated. PA66 GF25 is the standard because it has to do three contradictory things: conduct heat poorly, carry the structural shear between the two aluminum halves, and survive the paint or anodize bake and decades of thermal cycling without creeping. A strut that creeps is a frame that racks. This small polymer part is what makes a code-legal aluminum window possible, and the specification names it.

Moisture uptake rules it out of reflow: a PA66 housing that has been sitting in a humid plant will popcorn in the oven, which is why the same connector family exists in PBT for the surface-mount version.

    DIN rail enclosures are PA66 because the standard demands a housing that holds a 35 mm rail clip through a decade of thermal cycling inside a panel that reaches 60 C, and that carries UL 94 V-0 and a high comparative tracking index next to terminal blocks. The whole industry builds to the same fixed module widths, so the resin decision is about rating and stability rather than about geometry.

    Harness clips, tie mounts, saddles, and grommets are PA66 because the part has to snap into a sheet-metal hole, stay snapped through vibration and a temperature cycle, and carry a UL 94 V-2 or V-0 rating inside an enclosure. It is sold by the bag against a drawing and a specification, and the specification usually names the resin explicitly.

    Glass-filled PA66 is the alternative where mechanical robustness or thread strength on a barrel sensor matters more than moisture stability, and it is what most M12 sensor bodies are. Moisture uptake means the thread and the seal groove are drawn with it in mind.

    Glass-filled PA66 is specified where the molded chassis is genuinely structural: a display mount, a battery retention frame, or anything that has to hold a preload at 85 C. It gives the stiffness and heat deflection PC/ABS does not, and gives up the surface and the moldability that made PC/ABS attractive.

  • Standoff, boss and insertCOMMON

    Board standoffs and screw bosses fail two ways: the boss splits when a self-tapping screw goes in, or it relaxes and loses clamp load after a heat soak. Glass-filled PA66 resists both better than any styrenic, which is why a molded standoff that has to survive service and rework is nylon even when the surrounding part is not.

    Glass-filled PA66 is chosen for fan housings that carry the motor bearing load or that see continuous temperatures a polycarbonate would creep at. It is also the resin of the fan supplier rather than the enclosure supplier, which means the shroud and the fan are usually one purchase and one qualification.

    A wall mount carries the product weight in cantilever, sometimes off a single screw, for a decade. Glass-filled PA66 has the creep resistance to hold a preload at elevated temperature that no styrenic does, and it takes a self-tapping screw into a molded boss without splitting. Moisture uptake is the compromise: the part grows slightly in a humid install, which is why the mounting slot is drawn oversized.

    An inline IV filter is a pleated nylon 6,6 membrane at nought point two micrometres, and it is doing three jobs at once: retaining particulate from admixture and glass ampoules, retaining bacteria as a sterilizing grade filter, and on many designs venting air through a separate hydrophobic element so an air embolus never reaches the patient. Nylon is chosen because it is naturally hydrophilic, so it wets spontaneously and does not need a surfactant that could leach into the fluid path, and because it has low protein binding, which matters when the drug being delivered is the protein.

Implantable Textiles
  • Monofilament sutureCOMMON

    Nylon monofilament is the general purpose permanent monofilament: skin closure, general soft tissue, and the black suture everyone pictures. It handles better than polypropylene and is cheaper, it loses a meaningful fraction of its tensile strength in vivo over months as it absorbs water, and for the applications it is used in that does not matter because the tissue has healed. It is a mature, price-competitive product with a long installed base of surgeon preference behind it.

Wound Care and Absorbent

    Polyamide net is the alternative carrier and is used where a softer drape and a finer filament are wanted, particularly on facial and paediatric dressings. Nylon absorbs moisture, which changes its dimensions in a wet wound environment, and that is a real design consideration rather than a disqualifier: it is managed with the knit geometry. The choice between polyester and polyamide here is usually made by whichever one the coater has already validated rather than by a property argument.
