Where PVC/Nitrile Closed-Cell Foam Is Used in North American Manufacturing

Weather-sealing and vibration-damping closed-cell foam for gaskets and HVAC insulation. Used in 20 part families across 8 industries.

Marine

6 PART FAMILIES
Deck & Hatch
  • Hatch and locker sealCOMMON

Closed-cell PVC/nitrile sponge carries the lower-cost hatch, locker and fish box seals, usually as an adhesive-backed tape profile rather than a mechanically retained extrusion. It seals at very low closing force, which is what an unlatched or single-latch locker lid needs, and it is a fraction of the cost of an extruded bulb. It compresses permanently over time and it absorbs water once the skin is cut or abraded, which is why it does not appear on anything that has to stay dry. Its real advantage is that it forgives a hatch opening that is not flat, and very few molded hatch openings are flat.

Electrical
  • Battery box and switch panel sealCOMMON

Closed-cell sponge gasket carries switch panels, breaker enclosures and helm electronics housings, where the closing force is a few small screws into a thin panel and an extruded bulb would need more compression than the fasteners can deliver without distorting the panel. It seals at very low force, it takes up the waviness of a hand-cut panel opening, and it is supplied as adhesive-backed tape so no retention channel has to be designed. It compresses permanently over time, which is acceptable on an enclosure that is opened once a decade and is not on one a technician services.

Fuel & Water
  • Sanitation hoseCOMMON

Sanitation hose is defined by a failure mode no other hose in this report has: odor permeation. The hose does not leak, does not burst and does not fail any pressure test, and the boat smells. Everything about the construction is aimed at that. The answer is a butyl or butyl-lined barrier, because butyl has by a wide margin the lowest gas permeability of any commercial elastomer, wrapped in a reinforced cover for handling. It is the most complained-about part on any cruising boat, it is replaced on a schedule for that reason alone, and a supplier who solves it is selling a hose at a price nobody argues with.

Sealing
  • Hatch and locker gasketDOMINANT

PVC/nitrile closed-cell foam tape with a pressure-sensitive back is the hatch and locker gasket on most production boats because it seals against an uneven lip, tolerates fuel and sunscreen, holds up in UV better than plain PE, and comes on a roll the assembler can apply in a minute

  • Deck plate and access sealDOMINANT

A closed-cell foam washer or tape under the deck plate flange seals the fitting to the deck and takes up the gelcoat texture; nitrile blend because deck plates sit next to fuel fills and pump-outs

  • Windshield frame foamCOMMON

Closed-cell foam tape between the windshield frame feet and the deck seals the cabin, cushions the frame against the gelcoat, and stops the rattle; nitrile blend on the lines that want it to survive sunscreen and fuel dock spills

Automotive

3 PART FAMILIES
Interior
  • IP NVH tapeCOMMON

PVC nitrile foam patches damp vibration between the retainer and the HVAC case where a felt would not fill the gap

NVH
  • BSR tapeCOMMON

Closed-cell PVC nitrile foam patches fill a variable gap and damp rattle where a felt is too thin and a film too hard

Sealing
  • Body seam foam sealCOMMON

PVC/nitrile closed-cell foam for lamp pocket, tailgate, and HVAC case seals that see fuel, oil, and ozone and need a softer, more conformable seal than XLPE

Building Products

2 PART FAMILIES
Acoustic
  • HVAC duct liner and wrapCOMMON

Elastomeric closed-cell foam (AP Armaflex, K-Flex) lines and wraps duct and pipe where condensation control matters more than absorption and where a fiber-free, cleanable surface is specified

Sealing & Accessory Foam
  • Sill seal and gasketEMERGING

Closed-cell PVC/nitrile gasket strip is used under steel and aluminum framing in commercial work where a PE strip would not hold up to compression set and the specification names a closed-cell elastomer

Electronics

1 PART FAMILY
Enclosure Sealing
  • Enclosure gasket foamCOMMON

PVC/nitrile closed-cell foam brings oil and fuel resistance and a low water absorption rate, which puts it on industrial and vehicle-mounted electronics enclosures rather than on consumer devices.

Heavy Truck & Off-Highway

2 PART FAMILIES
Cab Seating
  • Seat suspension cushion and bumperCOMMON

Closed-cell PVC/nitrile pads damp the metal-to-metal contact inside the suspension scissor and between the seat pan and the riser. Oil resistance matters here in a way it does not in the cushion, because the damper is right there

Sealing
  • Door and window seal foam coreDOMINANT

Closed-cell PVC/nitrile is the workhorse foam core inside cab door, window, and access panel seals and in the die-cut gaskets under lamps, grab handles, and body hardware. It is closed-cell so it does not wick water, it compresses and recovers through a temperature range that spans a Minnesota winter and an Arizona summer, and it takes a pressure-sensitive adhesive backing cleanly

RV & Powersports

3 PART FAMILIES
RV Sealing
  • Slide-out seal foamDOMINANT

Closed-cell PVC/nitrile foam tape on the slide room flange and the opening frame takes the compression set of thousands of in-out cycles without going flat, stays flexible in cold, and does not absorb water; the specification is compression set and weather, and it is the reason this foam beats cheaper PE tape

  • Roof seam and rooftop gasket foamDOMINANT

The rooftop air conditioner gasket is a 14 by 14 inch closed-cell PVC/nitrile foam frame that seals the roof cutout under a hundred-pound unit through years of vibration and sun; it comes in the AC box from Airxcel or Dometic, and its failure is the single most common RV roof leak

  • Entry door and window seal foamCOMMON

PVC/nitrile foam tape behind window frames, baggage door flanges, and radius corners where an extruded seal cannot follow the shape; applied by hand with a PSA backing on the assembly line

HVAC & Water Heating

2 PART FAMILIES
Air Handling
  • Plenum and duct linerCOMMON

Closed-cell PVC and nitrile elastomeric insulation on refrigerant line sets, on chilled water piping, and wherever the insulation has to be a vapor barrier in itself because condensation inside the insulation is the failure mode

Air Side
  • Cabinet and panel gasketCOMMON

Closed-cell PVC and nitrile sponge is the volume incumbent on cabinet gasketing across the industry: it is cheap, it is available in adhesive-backed roll form in every thickness, and it is entirely adequate at the temperatures an air handler cabinet sees. It loses on long-term compression set and on ozone resistance, and it loses badly wherever the gasket is exposed to sunlight or to outdoor air. Where an OEM has moved a cabinet gasket from PVC/nitrile to EPDM, the trigger was almost always a leakage rate measurement rather than a failure.

Energy & Storage

1 PART FAMILY
Pack & Enclosure
  • Enclosure gasketCOMMON

Closed-cell PVC and nitrile sponge is the low-cost gasket on non-critical panels and covers, and it is also where an IP66 claim quietly degrades first.
