Cold Formed Framing
  • Light gauge steel studDOMINANT

    Cold formed steel framing is the highest tonnage family in this report and it is bought on two numbers: gauge and yield strength. Interior non-structural partition studs run 25 to 20 gauge at 33 ksi; structural exterior and load-bearing studs run 18 to 12 gauge at 50 ksi, designed under AISI S100 and its S240 framing standard. The design is a thin-walled buckling problem, not a yield problem, which is why the shape of the flange and the stiffening lip matter as much as the steel. There is also a long-running fight over minimum thickness: the industry distinguishes properly specified studs from underweight product, and the SFIA and AISI certification programs exist because of it.

  • Track and runnerDOMINANT

    Track is the U-shaped runner at the top and bottom of a stud wall, and the version worth understanding is deflection or slip track. A concrete slab or a steel beam above a partition deflects under live load, and if the wall is fastened tight to it the wall takes that load and cracks the drywall, or worse. Slip track lets the structure move up to an inch or more while still bracing the stud laterally, and it is sold as an engineered detail with a tested capacity, not as a formed channel. It is the one place in framing where the supplier sells design rather than tonnage.

Connectors and Anchors
  • Joist hangerDOMINANT

    A joist hanger is stamped and formed from galvanized sheet, usually 18 to 12 gauge, and the steel is the least interesting input. The product is the code-listed allowable load in an ICC-ES evaluation report, established by physical testing of the hanger with specified fasteners into specified lumber, and that number is what an engineer puts on a drawing. Simpson Strong-Tie is the category to the point that its part numbers function as generic specifications, and a competitor cannot enter by matching the steel or the geometry; it has to run the tests, hold the report, and get its number onto the drawing.

  • Hurricane tie and uplift connectorDOMINANT

    A hurricane tie is a small stamped bracket doing a structural job that is disproportionate to its size: it makes the load path from rafter or truss to top plate to stud to foundation continuous, so that wind uplift cannot separate the roof from the walls. Prescriptive code in high wind regions requires it, and engineered design requires it almost everywhere else. The steel is thin, the part costs a few dollars, and the consequence of omitting it is the failure mode that removes roofs in hurricanes, which is why inspection of these connectors is one of the few things a residential inspector genuinely checks.

  • Strap tie and holdownDOMINANT

    Straps, coiled strap, and holdowns handle tension: they tie a wall end to a foundation anchor, splice a top plate, or carry the overturning force out of a shear wall boundary. Holdowns are the heavy end, formed from 12 gauge and thicker and bolted to an anchor bolt or an epoxy anchor, and they are engineered parts with published tension capacities. Coiled strap is the opposite, sold by the roll and cut on site, and it is the cheapest structural steel on the job. Both sit in the same catalog and the same evaluation report system.

Grid and Support
  • Suspended ceiling grid teeDOMINANT

    Suspended ceiling grid is roll formed from prepainted steel in very light gauge, and it is the most precision-dependent roll forming in this report. A main runner has to be straight and the exposed face flat and consistent over twelve feet, cross tee clips have to engage repeatably thousands of times on one job, and the visible face width is a specified dimension because the grid is a seen architectural element. The category is concentrated in two manufacturers globally, which is unusual for a formed metal product and is a function of how much line precision and tooling the product requires.

  • Strut channel and supportDOMINANT

    Strut channel, the slotted C-section that everything mechanical in a commercial building hangs from, is roll formed from 12 and 14 gauge steel and sold by the stick through electrical, industrial, and mechanical distribution. It is a genuinely commodity product with published load tables and near-universal dimensional compatibility between brands, which means substitution at the counter is routine and brand loyalty is thin. The competitive action is not in the channel; it is in the engineered modular support systems that eliminate field cutting and threaded rod, which is the business Hilti built and where the margin is.

  • Roof curb and equipment supportDOMINANT

    A roof curb is formed and welded galvanized sheet, usually 18 or 16 gauge, made to order to raise a rooftop unit, hatch, or duct penetration above the membrane and give the roofer a flange to flash to. It is made to order because it has to match both the equipment footprint and the roof slope, so the top is level while the base follows the deck pitch. That means the supply base is dozens of regional fabricators and job shops buying small quantities of coil from service centers, on lead times measured in days, which is the opposite of every other family in this report.

Metal Openings
  • Hollow metal door and frameDOMINANT

    Hollow metal is the commercial opening: a formed sheet steel frame, welded or knock-down, and a door made of two face sheets over a stiffened core, in 18 and 16 gauge for the door and 16 and 14 for the frame. The product is sold on a fire rating established by listing, on hardware preparation done to template in the shop, and on lead time, and it is distributed through a fragmented network of hollow metal distributors and door and hardware suppliers who do the final prep. A mill or service center selling into this family is selling to hundreds of small fabricators, not to a handful of brands.

  • Garage door panelDOMINANT

    A sectional garage door is the largest formed steel product in a house after the roof, and it is roll formed from prepainted coil in 25 to 27 gauge on the value end and 24 gauge on premium doors. The exterior face is embossed to imitate wood grain and stile-and-rail raised panel, which is a roll forming and embossing job done in line. The product is sold at retail and through dealer installers on appearance, R-value, and wind rating, and the coil decision is made by three or four large manufacturers buying at a scale that makes them significant accounts for any coated coil supplier.

Metal Roofing
  • Standing seam roof panelDOMINANT

    Steel is the substrate on the large majority of standing seam roofs and the grade conversation is short: 24 gauge for architectural and structural panel, 26 gauge for the value end, with a 50 ksi minimum yield on structural profiles that span purlins without a deck. What the grade does not decide is anything the customer cares about. Two panels rolled from the same 24 gauge Galvalume substrate can carry a 40 year warranty and a 20 year warranty, and the difference is entirely the coating on top. A mill selling into this family competes on coating line capability, width, flatness after coating, and freight, not on metallurgy.

  • Corrugated and ribbed roof panelDOMINANT

    Exposed-fastener panel is the tonnage product of this industry: R-panel, U-panel, and classic corrugated in 26 and 29 gauge, screwed through the rib into purlins. The structural requirement is modest because the panel is continuously fastened rather than clipped, so the gauge decision is driven by span tables, hail, and how much oil canning the buyer will tolerate rather than by yield strength. It is also the most price-transparent product in the catalog: an agricultural buyer can price a square of 29 gauge painted panel from three suppliers in a phone call, which is why freight radius decides more of this business than anything a mill or coater does.

  • Metal shingle and tile panelDOMINANT

    Metal shingle is the one family here that is genuinely stamped rather than roll formed, which changes the supply base completely: it needs a press, a die per profile, and a die change to introduce a style, which is why the category is concentrated among a handful of manufacturers rather than spread across hundreds of roll formers. Steel in 26 gauge with a stone-chip or granular coating is the volume construction, aimed at residential reroofing where the buyer wants 50 year metal service life without a commercial appearance. The die cost is the barrier to entry that the rest of this lens does not have.

  • Roof flashing and trimDOMINANT

    Galvanized steel is the volume flashing material by a wide margin: step, valley, drip edge, counter, and penetration flashing brake-formed from coil or bought in stock lengths, at a price per piece that nobody reviews. That is precisely the problem. Flashing is where roofs leak, its cost is trivial against the roof, and the substitution decision is made by a roofer at a distributor counter rather than by a specifier. A supplier that wants this business sells through the branch and competes on whether the profile is in stock in the right color, which is a distribution problem dressed as a product problem.

  • Formed gutter and downspoutCOMMON

    Galvanized and prepainted steel gutter survives in commercial work and in northern markets where ice damming and ladder damage punish thin aluminum, and in heavy half-round profiles where the added stiffness matters. It is also the default on steel panel roofs, where matching the panel coating system and avoiding a dissimilar-metal junction both point the same way. The reason it is not dominant is entirely the cut edge: a steel gutter rusts at the outlet, the miter, and every screw penetration, in the one part of the building that is wet by design.

Metal Wall Cladding
  • Insulated metal panel skinDOMINANT

    An insulated metal panel is two roll formed steel skins with a foam core poured or laminated between them in a continuous line, and the skins are thin: 26 gauge exterior and 26 or 28 gauge interior is typical, because the composite action of the sandwich, not the gauge, provides the stiffness. That is the whole engineering trick of the product and it is why the panel spans further than either skin could. It also means the skin has to be flat and consistent, because any coil shape defect shows as a telegraphed line on a large, flat, specified wall surface that people look at.

  • Formed wall panelDOMINANT

    Single-skin formed wall panel in concealed-fastener flush, reveal, and box rib profiles is the architectural workhorse of metal cladding, formed in 22 to 26 gauge depending on how flat the face has to read. Heavier gauge is specified almost entirely to fight oil canning, which is the visible waviness in a flat metal face and the single most common source of rejection on a metal wall. Oil canning comes from coil shape, from forming stresses, and from installation, and it is never fully eliminated, so a supplier that can explain and control it has a genuine advantage.

  • Metal soffit panelCOMMON

    Steel soffit appears on commercial and institutional canopies and on metal building eaves, usually because it matches a steel wall or roof panel already on the building and the specification wants one coating system throughout. It is heavier, it is stiffer over long unsupported spans, and it resists impact where a soffit is reachable. The penalty is the cut and punched edge in a wet, shaded location, which is exactly where galvanized and Galvalume are weakest, so a steel soffit is a decision made for visual continuity and paid for in service life.

  • Trim and brake coilCOMMON

    Prepainted steel trim coil is sold for commercial and metal building trim, where it matches a steel panel roof or wall in both coating system and color run and avoids a dissimilar-metal junction. It is heavier to handle on a brake and it holds a sharper formed edge, which some fabricators prefer. On residential remodeling it is uncommon because a steel coil cut and formed on site has an unprotected edge at every cut, and the remodeler is not going to prime it.

Enclosure
  • Sheet-metal enclosureDOMINANT

    Cold-rolled and galvanneal mild steel is the chassis and rack material because it is cheap, stiff, weldable, and shields EMI by default.

Internal Molded Structure
  • Molded internal chassisDOMINANT

    A stamped or formed steel internal chassis is still the default in anything with weight, heat, or an EMI requirement, because it grounds, shields, and conducts heat for free. A molded chassis has to buy all three back with conductive coatings, separate shields, and a thermal path, which is why the switch happens on geometry and part-count grounds rather than cost grounds.

Molded Enclosure
  • Rack mount panel and earDOMINANT

    Rack hardware is formed steel by default because a 19 inch panel is long, thin, and loaded at the ears, and EIA-310 mounting expects it to be rigid and grounded. A molded panel has to argue against a formed and powder-coated one that already meets the standard and shields by accident.

  • Wall mount bracketCOMMON

    Stamped steel is the incumbent on heavy wall and pole mounts and the benchmark a molded bracket must beat. Molding wins when the bracket has to integrate a cable channel, a cosmetic cover, and a snap interface in one part; steel wins on pure load per dollar.

Cab Exterior

    Chrome-plated or painted steel remains the bumper on vocational and heritage-styled trucks where durability and image both favor metal

Cab Structure
  • Cab floor panDOMINANT

    A truck cab floor is the part of this lens that looks most like automotive and behaves least like it. The geometry wants a deep draw with a tunnel, seat mounts, and a pedal box, which in a car would be one stamping from a large transfer press. At 30,000 cabs a year the die and the press time do not pay, so a truck floor is often several formed pieces welded together, made on smaller equipment with simpler tooling. That is a worse part by automotive standards and the correct part by heavy-truck economics, and a supplier who arrives from automotive quoting a one-piece draw will be told the tooling number is absurd.

  • Cab door innerDOMINANT

    A truck cab door inner carries hinges, latch, glass run, and regulator, and it is the single clearest illustration of the tooling economics on this lens. In automotive it is one deep draw from a dedicated die. Here the same part is made in two or three formed pieces, or on soft tooling with a shorter die life, or on a hydroform, because the die cost cannot be spread across enough parts. What a truck OEM buys from a supplier on this family is willingness to engineer around low volume rather than press capacity.

  • Cab back panelDOMINANT

    The rear closing panel of a day cab or the bulkhead between cab and sleeper is large, mostly flat, and low curvature, which makes it the natural candidate for forming rather than drawing. Roll formed or brake formed sections welded into a panel assembly beat a draw die on tooling cost at this volume, and the panel is not a Class A appearance surface, so the finish standard that would force a draw in automotive does not apply.

Off-Highway
  • Cargo box and hopperCOMMON

    Stamped and welded steel beds on work UTVs and ag dump boxes where payload and abrasion win

Off-Highway Structure
  • Counterweight and ballastDOMINANT

    A counterweight is mass that makes a machine stable, which is a strange specification: the requirement is density and volume in a defined envelope, and structural performance is almost incidental. That splits the family. A fabricated counterweight is a plate box filled with steel punchings and concrete, which any fabricator with a burn table and a weld cell can make and which lets an OEM tune the weight late in a program. The alternative is a single large casting, which is cheaper at volume and impossible to change.

  • Track frame and undercarriageDOMINANT

    A track frame is the heaviest plate weldment on a crawler machine: thick sections, deep welds, and a load case that is full machine weight plus impact, transmitted through idler and roller mounts that are themselves welded in. Structural plate in thicknesses well beyond anything a press could form is cut, beveled, fitted, and welded, often with submerged arc on the long seams. This is where the distance between this industry and automotive is widest, because nothing about it resembles a stamping operation at any point.

  • Loader and excavator bucketCOMMON

    The bucket shell, the back plate, and the mounting structure are conventional structural plate, because they carry load rather than abrasion and because they have to weld to everything else without a heat treatment argument. Getting the split right, hard where it wears and tough where it carries, is what separates a bucket that lasts from one that cracks, and it is knowledge a fabricator either has from experience or does not have at all.

  • Boom and arm weldmentCOMMON

    Conventional structural plate carries the boom and arm structures on smaller machines and on the parts of a large weldment where fatigue is not governing. It is also what a fabricator new to this work should quote, because the weld procedure qualification is simpler and the consequence of getting preheat wrong is smaller.

Tractor Chassis
  • Frame railDOMINANT

    A heavy-truck frame rail is heat-treated 110 ksi minimum yield steel, formed into a C-channel up to forty feet long, and it is the most specialized formed part in this atlas. The design number is resisting bending moment, section modulus times yield, and a fleet spec sheet quotes it directly. Two things make this a business with very few suppliers. The material is a mill product almost nobody else buys, sold in coil widths and lengths that only rail formers order. And the equipment is a roll forming line or a press line long enough to handle a forty foot section, which costs more than most fabricators in this roster are worth. That is why a frame program gets quoted by Metalsa or Dana and by almost nobody else, and why the entry barrier here is capital rather than know-how.

  • Chassis crossmemberDOMINANT

    Crossmembers set frame torsional stiffness, and torsional stiffness is a tuning decision rather than a strength decision: a vocational chassis on uneven ground wants a frame that twists, a line-haul tractor wants one that does not. Formed HSLA channel and hat sections bolted or riveted to the rail web are the default because they are cheap to form on a brake, easy to change between builds, and forgiving of the hole pattern variation a truck configured to order actually has. Almost none of this is stamped: the volume per configuration is in the hundreds.

  • Bumper (formed metal)DOMINANT

    A conventional tractor bumper is formed steel, made on a press brake or a single-hit die rather than a progressive one, and it is a good illustration of why this industry does not tool up. There are dozens of bumper variants across models, trims, and vocational configurations, each one running low hundreds to low thousands a year. A brake and a weld fixture cover all of them for the cost of one die. The functional requirement is modest, mostly a mounting structure and a stone shield; the real requirement is appearance and fit, because the bumper is the face of the truck and a fleet buyer looks at it.

  • Suspension hangerCOMMON

    Conventional HSLA plate still carries most of the hanger volume, particularly on vocational and off-highway chassis where the load case is brutal but the weight target is loose. It welds without procedure gymnastics, it forms on a brake without cracking, and a fabricator can qualify a weldment on it in weeks rather than months. On this lens that is often the whole argument.

  • Fifth wheel top plateCOMMON

    The mounting brackets, slide rails, and angle assemblies that attach the top plate to the frame are conventional high strength plate, formed and welded, and they are a real part of the weight and cost of the system. A slide assembly that lets the driver reposition the fifth wheel for axle load compliance under the bridge formula is itself a fabricated structure that has to hold the same load in every position it can lock into.

  • Battery box (formed metal)COMMON

    Steel boxes hold the cost-driven and vocational end of the market, where a coated or galvanized box at a lower price is the right answer on a truck that is going to be abused anyway. It is also the default on chassis where the box doubles as a structural or step element and the loads are higher than an aluminum section would carry at the same wall thickness.

Trailer Structure
  • Trailer rear frame and guardDOMINANT

    The rear frame is the one trailer structure with a federal performance standard written directly against it. FMVSS 223 sets the strength and energy absorption a rear impact guard has to deliver and FMVSS 224 requires one on most trailers, and the qualification is a physical test against a specified load at specified points. That makes this a certified structure rather than a designed one, and it keeps it in steel: the test file exists in steel, the weld procedures exist in steel, and nobody requalifies a safety structure to save twenty pounds. Corner posts, rear sill, and door frame are formed and welded HSLA sections around the same assembly.

  • Landing gear legDOMINANT

    Landing gear holds a loaded trailer up when the tractor is gone, and it has to do three different things at once: carry a static load of tens of thousands of pounds, lift that load through a gearbox a driver turns by hand, and survive side load when a tractor backs in crooked. The third one is what actually breaks them. Formed and welded HSLA sections are universal here because the part is bought on proven load rating and price, the test is a physical one, and the geometry is set by a standardized mounting pattern that nobody is going to change.

    Steel crossmembers hold the heavy haul, the lowboy, the logging trailer, and everything else where concentrated point loads and abuse beat payload arithmetic. A steel platform deck takes a tracked excavator being driven onto it; an aluminum one takes it once. Where the trailer is bought to survive rather than to weigh out, steel is not a cost compromise, it is the correct engineering answer and the operator knows it.

    Steel crossmembers stay on the trailers that take the worst floor loading and the most corrosive cargo, and on the low-cost end of the market. Galvanized or coated steel also answers the one thing aluminum does not: an aluminum crossmember in contact with a treated hardwood floor and road brine is a galvanic cell, and the corrosion shows up at the fastener line first.

    Steel posts hold the cost-driven end of the market and the applications where cargo restraint load or impact from a forklift inside the trailer governs. It is the wettest part of a washer or dishwasher for its whole life, so the zinc coating is the corrosion answer and G60 or G90 is a specification line on the coil, not a finishing operation. It is never painted and never seen, which makes it the purest conversion-cost part in the report

    Hinges, straps, strikes and latch plates are progressive-die stampings in 1.5 to 3.0 mm cold-rolled steel, usually zinc plated or galvanized, and they are the highest part count and lowest unit price family in the lens. A refrigerator door hinge carries a foamed door with a full set of bins through a hundred thousand cycles without sagging, and the tolerance that matters is the hinge pin hole position, because a tenth of a millimeter there is a visible door misalignment at the far edge

    Toe kicks, side trim, fillers and grille panels are the cheapest parts in the report and among the most visible, which is the definition of a prepainted coil part: single plane or single break, no draw, a color that has to match a cabinet panel formed on a different press in a different plant. Color match across parts made from different coil lots is a real supplier qualification issue and it is managed at the coater with a color standard, not on the assembly line

    The oven cavity is the part that defines the technical edge of appliance metal. A pyrolytic self-clean cycle takes the cavity to about 900 F to burn residue to ash, and no organic coating survives that: not powder, not silicone, not PTFE. Porcelain enamel, a glass frit fired on at 1450 to 1550 F, is the only finish that does, and it also has to be acid resistant enough to take spilled tomato and fruit sugar without etching. That forces the substrate too: the steel must be enameling grade, low carbon, decarburized and low in metalloids, or hydrogen released during firing lifts the enamel off the surface in flakes, which is the defect the industry calls fishscaling. The cavity is welded from formed panels before enameling, so every weld and every sheared edge has to be enamelable as well

  • Broiler pan and rackDOMINANT

    The broiler pan is porcelain enameled steel for the same reasons as the cavity, at a fraction of the tooling cost: it is a shallow two-piece draw, it is in direct food contact, it sees fat at broil temperature and it goes into a dishwasher. It is also a shipped accessory rather than an assembled part, which makes it one of the few appliance metal parts a supplier can win without touching the assembly line

    The backguard is a printed surface as much as a formed one. It is prepainted coil with the control graphics screen printed or applied as a decorated overlay, cut for the display and the knob shafts, and it sits directly behind a cooktop where it takes steam, grease and heat. The coil coating has to accept the print process and hold the print adhesion after that exposure, which is a coating specification the coil coater owns end to end

    The honest answer for a burner grate is enameled gray cast iron: it has the mass to stay put under a shifted pot, the thermal inertia not to warp, and an enamel bond that survives direct flame. Formed and enameled steel grates exist on entry-level ranges and on some sealed-burner cooktops, and stamped steel burner caps and rings are universal, but a steel grate is lighter, it rings when it is moved, and it is the part buyers most often say feels cheap. This row carries the formed steel grates and caps; the cast iron majority has no id in this taxonomy and would belong to the castings-forgings lens in any case

    The dryer drum is the strongest porcelain enamel case outside the oven. It is a rolled and seamed cylinder in enameling-grade low-carbon steel with formed baffles, and the inside surface has to be smooth enough not to snag or grey a garment, hard enough to survive zippers and rivets for twenty years, and completely unaffected by humid 150 F air and the alkaline residue of detergent carried in on wet laundry. Porcelain enamel, which is glass fired onto the steel at about 1500 F, is the only finish in the appliance world that does all of that, and its one weakness, brittleness at an impact, is the reason a chipped drum rusts in a streak

    The dryer front is prepainted coil with a large round door opening, which puts the only real forming challenge in the lens on a painted surface: the door aperture is either pierced and flanged, which stretches the coating at the flange radius, or the opening is a separate bezel. It is a large, simple, gently formed shell in 0.5 to 0.7 mm cold-rolled steel, roll formed or brake formed from one blank and never drawn hard, so a polyester or silicone-modified polyester coil coating survives the forming without crazing at the radii. Buying it prepainted means the refrigerator plant never owns a spray booth, a cure oven, a paint kitchen, a wastewater system or a Title V air permit for this part, and the white or stainless-look surface arrives on the coil at a known cost per square foot. That is the single biggest cost lever in appliance metal, and it is not a material saving, it is the deletion of a department

    The mass-market door front is prepainted coil in white, black, biscuit or a printed stainless-look laminate, formed after coating exactly like the wrapper.
