The specification questions are always the same: what is the surface energy of the paint or the clearcoat, and does the panel get cleaned before the tape lands.

The damping treatment on a washer or dryer cabinet is a bonded pad, and the bond is the functional part: a constrained layer only damps if the viscoelastic layer is coupled to the panel on one face and to a stiff constraining layer on the other. The specification number is loss factor at the panel resonance and the appliance operating temperature, not peel strength.

The evaporator plate and the defrost heater have to be held flat against the liner wall with a bond that survives 20 years of frost and defrost cycling between roughly -25 and +10 C, and that cannot be inspected or repaired once the foam is in. Acrylic foam tape is the standard because it holds under permanent load at low temperature, absorbs the differential expansion between an aluminium plate and a plastic liner, and needs no cure step inside a cabinet that is about to be foamed.

Cell and Module Bonding

Acrylic foam tape is the third option and the one that moves fastest through a design cycle, because it needs no dispensing equipment, no meter mix, no cure time and no cleanup. It is used on lower-rate programs, on prototypes and on modules that are being redesigned every quarter, which describes a great deal of this industry right now. It carries less load than either liquid adhesive and its thickness is fixed, so it is a real production choice only where the load path runs through a frame and the tape is holding position rather than carrying the stack.

Conductive foam tape and fabric-over-foam gasketing is the volume answer for the seams that need shielding without a weather seal: door frames, internal bulkheads and panel joints inside an already-sealed enclosure. It is a converter product, supplied die-cut and tabbed, which is why the die-cutters sit in Tier 1 on this lens and why a material producer with no converting relationship cannot reach the application.

Acrylic foam tape attaches modules, skirts, wire management clips and rail hardware without piercing a frame or a roof membrane, and the no-penetration argument is the whole sale. On a rooftop array every fastener is a potential leak in someone else roof, and on a module frame every hole is a warranty question. The tape has to hold a wind uplift load that is calculated rather than guessed, survive UV at the edges of the bond line, and hold at the temperature a dark module reaches in full sun, which is well above what most people assume.

Frameless and glass-glass module constructions replace the framed edge seal with a bonded edge or a tape, and they are growing because they remove the aluminum frame, which is both the cost and the largest single embodied-carbon item in a module. The bond has to do structurally what the frame did, which is a much harder adhesive problem than sealing an edge, and it is the reason this is emerging rather than established.
