TPV appears on the rubrail base and on heavy-duty commercial and pontoon rubrails where the part is structural rather than cosmetic: it has better compression recovery after impact than either PVC or a general TPE, so the rail returns to shape after a hard dock landing instead of staying dented. It is also more expensive and available in a narrower color range, which is why it stays on the base and the commercial applications rather than on the visible insert. The two-material rubrail, TPV base and PVC or TPE insert, is the standard construction and is a two-supplier part.

TPV is the interesting emerging position here and it is not yet a winner. A thermoplastic vulcanizate bellows can be blow molded or injection molded rather than compression molded and cured, which cuts cycle time and tooling cost dramatically and makes a geometrically complex convoluted bellows far cheaper to produce. The obstacle is flex fatigue life at the convolution root under full steering deflection in cold water, which is precisely the condition a cured rubber bellows was developed to survive. Nobody in this industry will accept a bellows that is ninety percent as good, because the ten percent is the boat.

TPV is taking share on damper and cabinet profiles for a processing reason rather than a performance one: it can be extruded and co-extruded on thermoplastic equipment, it can be welded or co-molded onto a plastic or metal carrier, and it can be reground. The performance is close enough to EPDM across the temperature range a damper sees, and the assembly cost saving from co-molding a seal onto a blade rather than applying a separate profile is larger than any material cost difference. This is the quiet substitution on the air side of this lens and it does not involve a certification at all.
