Deck & Hatch
  • Hatch and locker sealDOMINANT

    EPDM owns the deck hatch seal and the reason is the property automotive rarely has to design for. A marine hatch seal sits on an open deck in unshaded sunlight for twenty five years with no paint, no garage and no body panel over it, in air carrying ground-level ozone and salt aerosol. Ozone cracking on a statically strained bulb seal is a routine marine warranty finding and an automotive rarity, and EPDM has the best ozone and UV resistance of any elastomer at a price the industry will pay. A supplier arriving with an automotive weatherstrip compound book will pass every bench test and fail the third season outdoors.

  • Cabin door and companionway sealDOMINANT

    Cabin door and companionway seals are EPDM for the same weathering reasons as the hatch seal, with one duty the hatch does not have: the opening moves. A hull flexes under way, a door frame bonded into a molded structure racks with it, and a door that closed perfectly at the dock has a different gap at the corners in a seaway. That makes the seal profile a tolerance-absorbing part rather than a sealing part, and the specification is about the range of compression over which the profile still seals rather than about the sealing force at nominal gap.

  • Window and windshield glazing sealDOMINANT

    Framed windshield and cabin window glazing seals are EPDM: the gasket that carries the glass or acrylic in the frame, the wedge that locks it, and the setting blocks under it. The requirement that separates marine from architectural glazing is differential movement. Acrylic glazing has a coefficient of thermal expansion several times that of the aluminum frame around it, so the pane grows and shrinks against the frame every day, and the gasket has to accommodate that motion for decades without taking a set that opens a leak at the corner. Corners leak, not edges, and the corner detail is the whole design.

Electrical
  • Cable grommet and clam shellDOMINANT

    Cable grommets, glands and clam shells are EPDM on weathering, because they sit on the deck and the transom in full sun and are the single most common water ingress path into a boat after the hatches. The requirement worth understanding is that the grommet is almost never the actual seal: the sealant under and around it is, and the grommet is a strain relief and a UV shield that keeps the sealant in compression and out of the sunlight. A supplier who understands that sells the grommet as part of a sealing detail rather than as a molded part, and gets asked about the rest of the detail.

  • Battery box and switch panel sealDOMINANT

    Battery box and tray lid gaskets are EPDM because the part sits in a bilge or a console locker, sees salt water, acid mist and sunlight through an open hatch, and has to seal well enough to keep spray out without needing a latch force an owner will not apply. EPDM also resists sulfuric acid mist, which no other commodity elastomer does adequately, and that single property is why this is not simply a generic gasket family. With lithium installations the acid argument disappears and the thermal and ingress arguments get stronger, which is changing the specification rather than removing it.

Fuel & Water
  • Potable water hoseDOMINANT

    EPDM owns potable water hose on hot water resistance, on the absence of any plasticizer to migrate into the water, and on taste and odor performance, which is a real specification and not a soft one. The marine version adds two things the plumbing version does not have. It sits in an unventilated, hot compartment for its whole life, so heat aging of the cover matters as much as the tube. And where the system is potable, the formulation has to carry NSF/ANSI 61, which is certified per formulation and per plant rather than per company, and which a marine supplier coming from an industrial book will not have.

  • Bilge and livewell hoseCOMMON

    EPDM bilge and washdown hose is the upgrade, specified on larger boats and on commercial vessels where a hose failure in the bilge is a safety issue rather than an inconvenience, and where the hose may be pressurized by a washdown pump rather than merely carrying discharge. It brings real UV and ozone resistance, which PVC does not have, and it keeps its flexibility in cold weather, which matters on a hose that runs through an unheated bilge in a northern winter layup. It costs several times the PVC construction and sells on service life rather than on price.

  • Sanitation hoseCOMMON

    EPDM carries the vent lines, the pumpout fitting connections and the runs where the duty is intermittent and odor migration through the wall is less critical than flexibility and weathering at an exposed deck fitting. It is the wrong material for the main discharge run and a perfectly good one for the rest of the system, which is a distinction a builder does not always make and which produces a surprising number of odor complaints traced to the wrong hose in the right place. Specifying the system rather than the hose is the way into this family.

Hull Penetrations
  • Thru-hull and seacock gasketDOMINANT

    EPDM takes the thru-hull and seacock gasket because the duty is static compression in standing salt water with sunlight on the outboard face, and EPDM is the cheapest elastomer that holds all three. The joint is not sealed by the gasket alone: the flange is bedded in sealant and the gasket is the compression member that keeps the bedding in compression as the laminate creeps and the nut relaxes. That makes compression set the controlling property rather than sealing force, and it is why a softer, better-sealing NBR gasket loses. Where the same fitting is near an engine or a fuel fill, the specification changes to nitrile and the gasket becomes a different part number for the same hole.

  • Transducer and sensor gasketDOMINANT

    The transducer gasket is a compression seal under a bronze or plastic housing in the hull bottom, and EPDM takes it for the same reason it takes the thru-hull: permanent salt water immersion, static duty, and a price the builder will accept on a part that ships in the hundreds per hull across the fleet. The specific requirement that separates this family from a generic gasket is fairing. A depth or speed transducer must sit flush and square to the water flow, so the gasket has to compress to a repeatable, predictable thickness under a hand-tightened nut, which makes compression-deflection consistency the property that gets specified.

  • Rudder and steering gland sealCOMMON

    EPDM takes the static half of the rudder installation: the flange gaskets, the bearing housing seals and the tube-to-hull joint, which see salt water and no hydraulic fluid. Separating the two materials across one assembly looks like an overcomplication on a drawing and is the correct answer in the field, because the static seals are what a yard replaces during a routine haulout and the rotary seal is what requires the rudder to come out. Making the cheap, accessible part from the cheaper, better-weathering compound is the whole design.

Propulsion
  • Raw water pump impellerCOMMON

    EPDM impellers exist in freshwater and potable water service and in low-temperature applications, where the oil resistance NBR provides is not needed and EPDM buys better hot water and chemical resistance at lower cost. The reason it does not take the raw water pump is specific and worth knowing before anyone proposes it as a cost reduction: the impeller lives in an engine compartment where a fuel or oil film on the intake water is routine rather than exceptional, and an EPDM impeller that meets every bench test will swell and lose its interference fit in the first season on a boat with a weeping fuel fitting.

  • Wet exhaust hoseCOMMON

    EPDM carries the cooler downstream sections of the wet exhaust run, past the mixing point and toward the transom, where the mixture is mostly water and the temperature has dropped into the range EPDM handles indefinitely. It brings the best hot water resistance of the commodity elastomers and the best price, and the long straight sections where it is used are exactly where hose cost per foot shows up in a bill of materials. The failure mode to design against here is not heat: it is the cover, which lives in a hot engine compartment under UV through a hatch, and delaminates or checks long before the tube gives up.

  • Exhaust bellows and mixing bootCOMMON

    EPDM appears on the cooler bellows and connector boots downstream of the mixing point and on the exhaust sections of sterndrive transom assemblies where the gas is fully wetted before it arrives. It buys a lower part cost and much better abrasion and tear resistance than silicone, which matters on a boot that sits where a mechanic will kneel on it. The limit is temperature excursion rather than steady-state temperature: an EPDM boot that is fine at normal operation will not survive the one time the raw water flow stops and the run goes dry for a minute before the alarm is noticed.

  • Sterndrive bellowsCOMMON

    The sterndrive bellows is the single most consequential piece of rubber on a boat, and the reason is simple: it fails, the boat sinks. The U-joint bellows seals the transom opening around the driveline, it flexes through the full trim and steering range every time the drive moves, and it is under water whenever the boat is in the water. Because the failure is catastrophic and undetectable from inside the boat, it is a scheduled replacement item on a fixed interval rather than a condition-based one, which makes it the clearest annuity in the report. EPDM carries the usage row on ozone and weathering resistance, which is what kills a bellows that is otherwise sound.

EPDM has the ozone and weather resistance, the low compression set, and the low-temperature flexibility to keep the lip loaded against the panel through all of it, and it costs a fraction of silicone, which is the only material that clearly outperforms it and is never needed here.

The mount has to be soft enough to put the isolation frequency well below the running frequency of the motor and stiff enough to hold the motor concentric to the wheel so the blower does not rub. EPDM carries it on ozone resistance and on stable dynamic properties across the cabinet temperature range, which matters because the motor runs hot and a mount whose modulus drifts with temperature changes the isolation frequency along with it. Variable-speed ECM blowers made this harder, not easier: a motor that runs at seven different speeds passes through more resonances than one that runs at two.

    Cabinet and access panel gaskets seal against air leakage and against the condensation that forms on a cold cabinet in a humid basement, and EPDM sponge and extruded profile carry them on ozone and weather resistance and on recovery after long compression. The specification driver is not the material property, it is the cabinet leakage rate: air handler efficiency ratings and the energy codes behind them assign a penalty to cabinet leakage, so a gasket that takes a set and opens a gap costs the OEM a rating point rather than a warranty claim. That is an unusual and useful position for a material supplier, because a rating point is worth a measurable amount of money and can be argued for in a specification meeting.

  • Damper blade and jamb sealDOMINANT

    Zone dampers, economizers, and fresh air dampers are rated to a leakage class that the mechanical code and the energy code both reference, and the blade edge seal and jamb seal are what deliver it. EPDM extruded profile carries the application on ozone and weather resistance, on low compression set across a wide temperature range, and on the ability to be extruded into the complex bulb and fin geometries a low-leakage damper needs. The important commercial point is that the leakage class is a tested, published number on a submittal sheet, so the seal is contributing to a competitive claim rather than to a durability margin, and that makes the profile designer a genuinely technical buyer.

Combustion
  • Condensate trap sealDOMINANT

    The trap, the neutralizer, and the condensate pump on a condensing appliance are all wetted by condensate at pH 3 to 4, which is mildly acidic and which sits in the part continuously rather than passing through it. EPDM grommets, float seals, and body gaskets carry the application on acid resistance and on cost, and the property that decides service life is resistance to slow acid attack rather than temperature, because by the time the condensate reaches the trap it has cooled. The failure is a weeping trap that drips onto a furnace control board, and the resulting warranty claim is written against the board rather than the seal, which is why this part family is chronically under-engineered relative to the damage it causes.

  • Flue joint gasketCOMMON

    EPDM gaskets on the cooler portions of a condensing vent run and on the condensate-side connections where temperature is modest. EPDM handles the acidity adequately and costs substantially less than silicone, and the decision is made on the temperature at that specific joint rather than on the system as a whole. A supplier who knows the temperature profile of the vent run can place EPDM where it works and silicone where it must go, and that is a more credible conversation than proposing one material everywhere.

Outdoor Unit

    The cap gasket and the Schrader seal are the actual refrigerant seal when the cap is on. Elastomer compatibility with the refrigerant and its oil is a real qualification, and the R-454B and R-32 transition is forcing seal compound re-qualification across the whole line

    EPDM O-rings, seats, and diaphragms, the chlorine and hot water elastomer of choice in potable service. Nitrile is used in refrigerant and oil service on the same equipment and is the wrong answer here, which is a specification error that shows up in the field as a swollen seat and a weeping valve

Refrigerant Circuit
  • Expansion valve O-ringLEGACY

    EPDM is the wrong material for a halocarbon refrigerant circuit and appears here only to say so, because it is the single most common material error made by suppliers entering this lens from the plumbing or automotive weatherseal side. EPDM has excellent water, ozone, and chloramine resistance and is the default on the water side of the same equipment, which makes it easy to reach for. In refrigerant service it swells badly in POE lubricant and fails. The one exception that keeps it honest is ammonia refrigeration, where EPDM is correct and FKM and HNBR are not, but ammonia is industrial refrigeration and is outside the residential and light commercial scope of this report.

Vibration
  • Compressor mounting grommetDOMINANT

    The four snubber grommets between the compressor feet and the base pan are the first element in the outdoor unit noise path and they cost a few dollars a set. EPDM carries them because they sit outdoors in sun, rain, ice, and ozone for fifteen years, and because EPDM holds dynamic properties across the temperature range an outdoor unit actually sees, which in North America is minus 20 F to 130 F on the same machine. The design problem is that the grommet has to be soft enough to isolate the compressor running frequency and stiff enough to hold the compressor located through a shipping drop and through the torque reversal at every start. Scroll compressors and variable-speed drives both made this harder: a variable-speed compressor sweeps through its resonance every time it ramps.

  • Outdoor unit isolator padDOMINANT

    Compressor noise transmission into a house is a top consumer complaint about heat pumps and air conditioners, and it is getting louder as a political matter rather than a technical one: heat pumps run in winter when windows are closed and neighbours are close, and municipal noise ordinances are being applied to residential outdoor units in a way they were not ten years ago. The isolator pad, the spring and rubber mount under the unit, and the line set standoffs are what break the structure-borne path into the slab and the wall. EPDM carries them on outdoor durability, on stable dynamic properties across the temperature range, and on resistance to the ozone and UV that destroy an unprotected pad in a few seasons. The commercial point is that this is an application where the buyer is increasingly the homeowner and the installer rather than the OEM, because the pad is often specified at installation, which puts it in the wholesale channel.

Water Side
  • Circulator pump sealDOMINANT

    A hydronic circulator secondary seal sees treated loop water, usually with glycol and a corrosion inhibitor package, continuously through the heating season and then sits static through the summer. EPDM is the default because it handles hot water and glycol and because it tolerates the alkaline inhibitor chemistry that a properly treated loop carries. The property that decides a long service life is compression set at temperature: a seal that relaxes over a season weeps when the system restarts, which is how a mechanical room ends up with a rust stain under a pump that nobody can explain. On domestic hot water recirculation the same part has to be NSF 61 certified because the water is potable, and that single distinction splits the circulator market into two qualification paths that look identical from outside.

  • Tank drain and port gasketDOMINANT

    The element gasket, the drain valve seat, the anode port seal, and the T&P valve seal on a storage water heater are all wetted potable water parts sitting at 120 to 140 F continuously for the life of the tank, which is eight to twelve years. EPDM carries all of them on hot water and disinfectant resistance, and every one of them needs an NSF/ANSI 61 certified formulation. What makes this part family commercially interesting is the aggregate: a water heater has a dozen small elastomer parts nobody thinks about individually, they are all on the same certification path, and the OEM would much rather buy them from one qualified supplier than manage a dozen certification files. Consolidating that package is a better entry than winning any single part in it.

  • Heat exchanger gasketDOMINANT

    A gasketed plate heat exchanger is held together by a perimeter elastomer gasket on every plate, and gasket life sets the service interval on the whole unit. That is the fact a supplier should lead with: nothing else in the exchanger wears, so the maintenance calendar, the spare parts revenue, and the downtime a building owner budgets for are all determined by a strip of rubber. EPDM carries the water, glycol, and hot water applications on disinfectant and inhibitor resistance and on its temperature range, and the specification is written as a service life in years at a stated temperature rather than as a material property. Regasketing a plate pack is a labor-intensive job, which means a compound that adds two years to the interval is worth a great deal more than the price difference in the gasket, and that is a rare position on this lens: a place where a better material can actually be sold at a premium.

  • Pipe union and flange gasketDOMINANT

    Flat gaskets and sealing washers at unions, dielectric nipples, and hose connections across the potable and hydronic system: a low-value, high-count part family that is easy to dismiss and is worth understanding for two reasons. First, it is almost entirely NSF 61 territory on the potable side, which means the same certification barrier applies to a fifteen cent washer as to a compressor seal. Second, it is bought overwhelmingly through plumbing wholesale rather than through OEM procurement, which means the compound decision is made by whichever gasket maker got onto the Ferguson or Winsupply line card. That is a distribution sale, and a material supplier who understands only the OEM path will never see it.

  • Flush valve and fill sealDOMINANT

    A commercial flushometer diaphragm opens and closes against line pressure tens of thousands of times a year, and when it fails the fixture either runs continuously or does not flush, both of which generate a service call the same day. EPDM holds it on disinfectant resistance and on flex fatigue, which is the property that actually matters on a diaphragm and is not the same property as the compression set that governs a static O-ring. The commercially important fact about this part family is that it is a repair part annuity: the diaphragm and the flapper are consumables sold for decades after the valve ships, through plumbing wholesale, at margins the original equipment sale never sees. A compound qualified into a flush valve is being qualified into a spare parts business, and that is how it should be priced.

  • Faucet cartridge sealDOMINANT

    The faucet cartridge is the most cycled potable water seal in a building: tens of thousands of open and close cycles, every one of them against chlorinated or chloraminated water, at temperatures that swing from mains cold to 140 F in a second. EPDM carries it for the same disinfectant resistance reason as the fitting O-ring, with the additional requirement of low friction and low stick-slip so the handle feels right, which is a consumer-perceived quality attribute the brand owner cares about more than the engineer does. NSF/ANSI 61 applies to the wetted seal and NSF/ANSI 372 applies to lead content across the whole assembly, which after the Safe Drinking Water Act amendments means a weighted average of 0.25 percent lead on wetted surfaces. The 372 requirement changed the brass, which changed the machining, which changed the surface the seal runs against, and a compound qualified against the old leaded brass surface is not automatically right on the new alloy.

    This is the clearest statement of the moat on this lens, so it is worth being precise about it. EPDM is dominant because it resists chlorine and chloramine, which are what a municipal water system actually contains, and because it holds its properties across the hot and cold cycling of a domestic water line for the design life of a building. Chloramine is the harder problem of the two: utilities moved to chloramine because it is more stable in distribution than free chlorine, and that same stability means it attacks an elastomer steadily rather than dissipating, which is why a compound that passed a chlorine soak can still crack in service. But compatibility is only the entry ticket. The part must carry an NSF/ANSI 61 certification, and that certification is per formulation and per part, not per company. A non-certified compound cannot be sold into this application at any price and at any level of technical superiority, because the fitting maker cannot list the fitting without it, and cannot sell an unlisted fitting into a jurisdiction that adopts the plumbing code. That is not a preference the OEM can be argued out of.
