The trade is comfort: the same impermeability that passes the viral challenge also traps heat and moisture against a surgeon standing for four hours, which is why level 4 is specified for the procedure and not for the shift.

It is several times stronger than polyester at the same diameter, it is very difficult to cut, and it is abrasive enough that it can cut through the tissue it is anchoring, which is the failure mode the category argues about. It is a small, technical, high margin corner of the suture business.

Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene is used in mesh where very high strength at very low areal density is the goal, which is the direction the whole category has been moving since the lightweight mesh literature landed. It is far stronger per unit weight than polypropylene, it is not the material named in the litigation, and it is difficult and expensive to knit because the fiber is slippery and has almost no elongation. That processing difficulty is the barrier to entry and it is the reason the position is held by few suppliers.
