TPE and TPV door seals are taking share on the same economics that moved automotive weatherstrip: the profile is extruded rather than cured, corners can be welded or injection molded onto the extrusion rather than spliced by hand, and process scrap is recyclable. On a boat the labor argument is stronger than in automotive, because a marine door seal is fitted by hand on a low-volume line and a molded corner saves a skilled operation rather than a cheap one. The reservation is long-term compression recovery in the sun, which is the specific thing marine service punishes hardest.

TPE inserts are displacing PVC at the upper end on exactly the weakness above. With no plasticizer to migrate, a TPE insert stays flexible and holds its color and gloss considerably longer in the sun, and it can be co-extruded with a rigid retention leg and a soft impact face in one pass. It costs more per foot and it is harder to heat-form on installation, which matters because the bow radius is formed at the boat rather than at the extruder. On a premium hull where the rubrail is a styling feature, the trade is easy; on a volume runabout it is not.

TPE takes the volume grommet, boot and strain relief where the part is injection molded in high cavitation at low cost and lives in a less exposed location: inside a console, behind a panel, at a bulkhead pass-through. It molds well in thin sections, it grips a cable jacket without adhesive, and it can be overmolded directly onto a connector body, which is where most of its growth is. It gives up long-term UV performance, which is exactly why it stays off the deck and the transom and takes everything below them.

TPE and TPV bilge hose is the growing middle of this family. It is extruded rather than cured, so it is cheap to produce in long runs and easy to make in a corrugated profile; it holds up to UV far better than PVC; and it has no plasticizer to migrate, so it stays flexible. What it gives up is temperature range and long-term compression recovery at the clamp, which is where a TPE hose is most likely to weep. On a discharge line at ambient temperature, that trade is straightforwardly good, which is why this material is taking share here and not on the exhaust or fuel families.

A supplier reading this category as textile is reading it wrong; it is an injection or compression molding business that happens to sit in the same part number family.

That removes a manual step from the most labor-intensive product in the vehicle, which is worth more than the small sealing performance gap on a route that is not a primary water path.

Halogen-free thermoplastic elastomer insulation is arriving on North American programs through European OEM specifications carried in on transplant programs, not through North American regulation. The driver is end-of-life: a halogenated insulation makes shredder residue harder to handle and produces corrosive combustion products, and European OEM material rules increasingly say so. It costs more, it needs a flame retardant package PVC does not, and it is coming anyway because the specification is written at a design centre in Germany.

The cost premium over PVC is real and is accepted because a cracked door loop is a warranty claim that requires trim removal to fix.

TPE is the default because it can be molded as one part with a rigid tether or two-shot onto a rigid carrier, it takes the repeated flexing at the hinge without tearing, and it processes on a standard injection press with no cure time.

The strain relief is what decides whether a cable assembly survives field use, and it is overmolded directly onto the jacket and the connector body in a second shot.
