    Oil filter media works hot, in oil, at pressure, across a viscosity range that changes everything: at a cold start the oil is thick, the pressure drop across the medium is high, and the bypass valve opens to protect the engine, which means unfiltered oil goes through. Everything about the medium design is aimed at that first minute. Synthetic polyester media gives higher dust holding capacity and better wet strength than cellulose, and it does not swell or lose strength in hot oil over an extended drain interval. Extended drain intervals are what pulled synthetic media into this application: a filter that has to work for 15,000 miles is a different product from one that works for 3,000.

    A spunbond or thermally bonded polyester layer is laminated to the meltblown as a support, as a pleatable structural layer and, in a combination filter, as the carrier for the activated carbon. Activated carbon is what separates a particle filter from a combination filter, it is what removes the odor and gas phase contaminants a customer actually notices, and it is most of the price difference between the two. It is applied either as a coated scrim or as a bonded bead layer, and the carrier has to hold it through pleating, shipping and a service life of vibration without shedding carbon dust into the HVAC case.

    Polyester nonwoven appears in engine air filtration as a pre-filter layer, as a support scrim and in composite media where its thermal and hydrolytic stability beats polypropylene. Under the hood the medium sees temperatures and humidity cycling that polypropylene tolerates less well over a long service interval, and polyester holds dimensional stability in the pleat pack where PP can relax and let the pleats collapse against each other. A collapsed pleat pack loses effective area, and the customer sees it as a restriction complaint rather than as a filter failure.

    Polyester fleece tape is the growth product of this category and the clearest recent example of a component supplier taking share by solving a noise problem. A fleece wrap damps the tick and buzz a taped bundle makes against a panel, replacing a separate foam pad and a separate operation, and it does it while carrying a respectable abrasion class of its own. It displaced PVC on interior routes on noise grounds, not cost grounds, and it is why tape is the one component in this lens where the assembler still exercises real judgement.

It is the single clearest example in this lens of a component supplier taking share by solving a noise problem rather than a cost problem.

    Fleece tape on the IP harness is a noise decision made at the highest-stakes location in the vehicle, because the IP is the surface closest to the driver's ears and the one most likely to transmit a rattle into the cabin as a quality complaint. A fleece-wrapped bundle sitting against an IP carrier does not tick over an expansion joint. A PVC-wrapped one does.

    Fleece tape is close to universal on a roof harness because the harness is pressed between the headliner substrate and the roof bow with no clearance, and any hard tape edge telegraphs through a soft headliner as a visible line or an audible tick. Fleece adds thickness that is a benefit rather than a packaging cost here.

Overhead and Trim Cover

    Between the face cloth and the substrate sits a scrim, and in the foam free constructions that are now growing it replaces the polyurethane layer entirely. A lightweight polyester nonwoven gives the laminate dimensional stability, prevents adhesive strike-through into the visible face, and keeps the whole assembly in one polymer family. It is specified by the laminator rather than by the design studio, which makes it one of the few parts on the visible chain that is bought on technical merit alone, and it is almost never bid competitively because switching it means requalifying a lamination process that was tuned around it.

  • Pillar and trim panel coverCOMMON

    Lower cost programs and lower visibility locations use a needlepunched or thermally bonded polyester nonwoven instead of a knit, laminated directly to the substrate. It reads as less finished up close and it is markedly cheaper, and on a B pillar or a rear quarter it is very often what is actually there. It also handles the wrap over a tight radius better than a knit does, which is why it appears even on some premium programs at the difficult geometries and is then covered by trim at the transitions.

    The heater element is bonded to a nonwoven carrier that sits between the trim cover and the foam pad, and the requirement that decides the material is fatigue rather than heat. An occupant enters and exits a seat tens of thousands of times over a vehicle life, and every entry drags the cover across the carrier and flexes it. A carrier that breaks down takes the heater element with it, and a failed seat heater is a dealer visit on a part buried under a sewn cover. Thermally bonded polyester nonwoven holds dimensional stability under that cycling and does not shed fiber into the element. Cost is a secondary consideration; the part is small and the failure is expensive.

    A lightweight polyester nonwoven backing is the foam free alternative, and it is growing for two independent reasons. It removes the polyurethane foam from the cover, which makes the whole assembly a single polymer family and therefore genuinely recyclable rather than nominally so, and it removes the flame lamination step. It gives up some of the soft initial touch, which is why it appears first on programs where the styling target is taut and technical rather than plush. A supplier proposing it is not selling a material substitution, it is selling a process change to a plant that already owns flame lamination capital, and that is the real objection to overcome.

    Fleece and PET cloth tapes came out of automotive harness work and are moving into premium appliance for the same reason they moved into cars: they are quieter. A loom taped in fleece does not tick against a panel, and on a machine whose selling point is how little noise it makes that is a real argument rather than an upgrade.

    The batt itself is fiberglass or mineral wool and the taxonomy has no row for either. polyester-nonwoven is the nearest fibrous material and is not what is used; it is mapped here so the family shows a substrate at all, and the real specification is a needled mineral wool blanket with a stated maximum service temperature.

    The wrap itself is a bonded or needled polyester or fiberglass blanket, and it is an absorber rather than a damper: it takes airborne noise inside the cavity and does very little about structure-borne noise in the tub wall. Confusing the two is why some machines with a thick wrap still sound loud, and it is the most useful technical distinction a supplier can bring to this conversation.

    The absorbent reinforcement panel around the fenestration is a spunlace or a needled polyester and viscose web laminated over the film, and its job is to take fluid off the field fast enough that it never runs. Absorbency rate matters more than absorbency capacity here, because fluid that beads and travels before it is absorbed is fluid that reaches an edge. This layer is also where a converter can differentiate on hand and on how the drape behaves when it is unfolded onto a patient by one person in a hurry.

  • N95 respirator mediaCOMMON

    The cup or the folded shell that holds the media in the shape of a face is a thermally bonded polyester or bicomponent nonwoven, and it does the job the media cannot: hold a stable geometry against breathing pressure without collapsing onto the wearer. A shell that deforms on inhalation increases the pressure drop and breaks the face seal at the same time, so the structural layer is a filtration specification in disguise.

Patient Environment

    Cloth-like disposable patient gowns and warming gowns are spunlace polyester and viscose, and the reason the category moved here from plain spunbond is entirely about how the product feels to a patient who is frightened and cold. A spunlace gown drapes, it is opaque, and it does not crackle. That is not a technical specification and it is the whole basis of the purchase, which makes this the one part family in the report where hand and appearance beat measured performance outright.

Skin Contact
  • Wearable injector adhesiveCOMMON

    A spunlace polyester or viscose nonwoven backing gives a wearable patch conformability and a cloth-like feel at a fraction of the cost of a cast film, which is why it dominates the low-cost half of this family. It breathes by construction rather than by chemistry and it is less durable in water, so it loses on anything worn through showering.

  • Surgical drape adhesiveCOMMON

    The drape body is a spunbond-meltblown-spunbond or spunlace nonwoven with a film barrier layer, selected against AAMI PB70 liquid barrier levels. The adhesive has to bond to it without striking through and stiffening the drape, which makes the substrate a constraint on the adhesive rather than an afterthought.

Wound Care and Absorbent
  • Woven gauze and spongesCOMMON

    Nonwoven sponges, usually a polyester and viscose spunlace, took a real share of the gauze market on a specific argument: they are softer, they are more absorbent per gram, and critically they do not shed loose fibers into a wound the way a cut edge of woven gauze does. Lint in a surgical wound is a foreign body and a granuloma risk, and that is the clinical argument the category was won on. They cost more per piece and less per procedure, which is the sale.

    The cloth-like backing of a first aid bandage or an island dressing is a polyester and viscose spunlace or a needled web, and it is chosen on three properties in tension: conformability, so it follows a knuckle; breathability, so the skin under it does not macerate over a day; and hand tearability, so the person applying it does not need scissors. Hand tear is a manufacturing property of the web construction rather than a material property, and it is the one that generates complaints when it is wrong.

Open plan created a noise problem the furniture industry had caused, and PET felt was the answer that could be sold through the furniture channel: no frame, no fabric to wrap, no fiberglass to contain, CNC cuttable without fraying, printable, thermoformable, available in a hundred colours, and carrying a post-consumer recycled content number that earns LEED and WELL credit. It is the rare case where the sustainability claim and the functional claim point the same way

    A hanging baffle is sold by the piece against a reverberation time target and it is where PET felt is at its most efficient, because a vertical baffle absorbs on both faces and the material cost per sabin is the lowest in the report. Density and thickness are the levers; a 12mm board doubled or folded outperforms a 9mm board at the same coverage, and the makers sell the geometry rather than the material

    PET felt replaced the fabric-over-fiberglass desk screen outright, and this is the cleanest substitution story in the atlas. The old screen was a fiberglass or mineral board core, a fabric wrap, a frame and a trim, assembled by four suppliers. The felt screen is one material, cut on a router, edge-finished by the cut itself, lighter to ship, recyclable at end of life and printable in the bargain. The old construction survives only where a tackable surface is required

    Felt ceiling rafts, fins and stretched systems sell into buildings with an open plenum and an exposed deck, which is the aesthetic that created the problem in the first place. The ceiling is the largest uninterrupted absorptive surface in any room, so it is where the sabins are cheapest to buy, and a felt system hangs from the same struts an open ceiling already has
